The Fundamentals of Meditation

"The reason why you suffer
is because you unconsciously
avoid this moment.

You are unconsciously
but constantly resisting
this moment;
separating yourself from
this moment.

So the path of awareness in meditation
is to get you back to this moment.

And the first part of meditation
is to sit still.

Because the most
physical way you avoid this
moment is by being restless
in the body.

It does not mean
that you cannot be present
while moving.

But for this meditation,
the first part is to sit still
and allow that resistance
to sitting still
be burned away
in awareness.

The second and
main way you avoid
this moment
is through identifying
with your thinking.

You are sitting still
yet you are thinking
about what you have
to do tomorrow.

The thought itself
does not take you out of this moment,
but your identifying with the thought
does.

The thought arises
"I have to go to work tomorrow"
and you are the "I" in that sentence.

And like you are in a dream,
you are lost in the imagination
of tomorrow.

You have successfully
escaped this moment.

This is identification.

Even thinking about
being present
keeps you from being present.

So then the second part
is to learn to either
witness your thinking,

let go of your thinking,

inquire into what is here
beyond thinking,

rest your attention on the bliss
that is here beyond thinking

or to even focus thought
by repeating a mantra.

Any of these methods
are to help keep you present
or at least give you a taste
of the present moment.

But the truth of it is that
you cannot be present.

The "you" who you think you are,
is that which is separate
from the present moment.
It is the very resistance
to the present moment.

So another way to look at it
is that you relinquish the idea of yourself
to realize the present moment,
to realize your are the present moment

and in this
you are free from suffering.

For however long
you can remain
free from thought identification
resting in your natural state
of pure awareness
there is peace.

And every time
you drop into pure awareness
this peace expands
and floods into
all aspects of your life.

Blessings,

Kip"

There's a Zen story in which a disciple asks the master, they're walking out in nature going on a hike, and the disciple asks the Master, "How do I enter Zen?"

The question means, how do I enter the state of consciousness that is Zen?

And the Master says, "Can you hear the sound of that mountain stream?"

And the disciple begins to listen.  At first he doesn't hear anything because it is so distant.  He listens.  "Yes, Master I can hear it."

And the master says, "Enter Zen from there."

"Okay."

And then they walk on in silence.  Two hours later, by then the disciple's mind has started again, "Master, I've been thinking.  What if I had said, 'no, I can't hear the mountain stream, what would you have said then?'"

And the Master says - raising his finger -, "Disciple."

"Yes Master."

"Enter Zen from there."

["Enter Zen from there."]

So, don't let this become a memorable experience.   Your mind may want to turn it into a memorable experience, although there isn't that much to remember but it might say, "It was so peaceful when we were sitting there listening to the rain."  At other times it was complaining about the rain, but it was peaceful.  What was peaceful about it?  The fact that you could step out of thought into the state of pure attention.  And no matter where you are you can step out of thought into the state of pure attention.

Lack and wholeness

The sense of lack comes directly from the belief in a separate self.  The separate self longs for wholeness.  It seeks wholeness through career, education, relationships, substances, shopping, sex, and even spiritual searching.  This separate self is perfectly designed to keep the sense of lack alive.  Each time it goes looking for wholeness, it strengthens the idea that there is a separate self that lacks something.

Notice that a false idea is playing itself out over and over in the mind.  The idea is that there is an "I" separate from wholeness that will find something, some future moment, or some other person or situation that will make me whole.  But the me can never feel whole.  It is, by its very nature, separate.

Notice the mind desiring others to be different, refusing to feel emotions and instead seeking ways to escape them, and searching for love, praise, acknowledgment, happiness, wholeness, peace, or freedom "out there" or "in the future."  The notion that wholeness is "out there" or "in the future" is just thought arising now.

What is noticing is an unwavering presence to what is - to all these mechanisms that keep separation in place.  This presence sees through the belief in the separate self.  This presence is, by its nature, already whole.  There has always been this wholeness, but it was being obscured by the story of a me looking for it.

Chapter 4

Fact:  Consciousness is the Infinite Itself

(Continuation...)

[As I have no parts, I never can be parted, or de-parted. Aliveness has no physical con-struction, so isn't subject to de-struction.]

The pure Aliveness I Am has nothing material of which I Am composed, so I can't de-compose. Having no pieces that are integrated, I never dis-integrate, which is why I Am also called Spirit. I Am not made up of many elements, so I Am not complex, nor any kind of mental complex. This pure I That I Am is the very essence of simplicity, ease, un-complexity.

Right now, identify not as a body, but as the Alive Presence I Am.

See if it's possible to plunge so deeply into this Conscious Aliveness, into the alive feeling that this Infinite I-Presence now is, that you go all the way through It. See if it's possible to reach a bottom of this Alive I-Presence, so you come to an end, or use It up.

The Presence Portal

From PART V:

6.

(Continuation...)

If we seek to enhance our dedicated breathing session with a clear intention, let it be with regards to how we seek to feel at the outcome of this event. We are to avoid placing expectations on the specific details of the outcome; to do so is to attempt to rob our Inner Presence of its part of the play. We are encouraged to honour our co-creative relationship with our Inner Presence by letting it surprise us with its unexpected input. Once we are clear on how we choose to feel at the outcome of the scheduled event, and we accomplish this clarity by feeling this way about it NOW, we then breathe for 30 minutes, or as long as we feel comfortable. Once we complete our breathing, our task is to take the required action to ensure we are physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared for the event. Then we let go.

The Ease Of Being

(Continuation...)

[However, sooner or later, gradually or instantaneously, Consciousness comes to recognise that it is already precisely what it is looking for, and that it is the search itself that prevents this realisation.]

This Self-recognition is not caused by anything that takes place within the search itself, because the Self-recognition is precisely the recognition that Consciousness is Happiness, Fulfilment or Peace itself, and that this Fulfilment is always and already prior to and within every experience.

This understanding is synonymous with the total collapse of the search, which may however reappear from time to time, due to the inertia of habit.

Chapter 88

Knowledge by the Mind, is not True Knowledge

(Continuation...)

Q:What is omniscience? Is God omniscient? Are you omniscient? We hear the expression -- universal witness. What does it mean? Does self-realization imply omniscience? Or is it a matter of specialized training?

M:To lose entirely all interest in knowledge results in omniscience. It is but the gift of knowing what needs to be known, at the right moment, for error-free action. After all, knowledge is needed for action and if you act rightly, spontaneously, without bringing in the conscious, so much the better.
