The Fundamentals of Meditation

"The reason why you suffer
is because you unconsciously
avoid this moment.

You are unconsciously
but constantly resisting
this moment;
separating yourself from
this moment.

So the path of awareness in meditation
is to get you back to this moment.

And the first part of meditation
is to sit still.

Because the most
physical way you avoid this
moment is by being restless
in the body.

It does not mean
that you cannot be present
while moving.

But for this meditation,
the first part is to sit still
and allow that resistance
to sitting still
be burned away
in awareness.

The second and
main way you avoid
this moment
is through identifying
with your thinking.

You are sitting still
yet you are thinking
about what you have
to do tomorrow.

The thought itself
does not take you out of this moment,
but your identifying with the thought
does.

The thought arises
"I have to go to work tomorrow"
and you are the "I" in that sentence.

And like you are in a dream,
you are lost in the imagination
of tomorrow.

You have successfully
escaped this moment.

This is identification.

Even thinking about
being present
keeps you from being present.

So then the second part
is to learn to either
witness your thinking,

let go of your thinking,

inquire into what is here
beyond thinking,

rest your attention on the bliss
that is here beyond thinking

or to even focus thought
by repeating a mantra.

Any of these methods
are to help keep you present
or at least give you a taste
of the present moment.

But the truth of it is that
you cannot be present.

The "you" who you think you are,
is that which is separate
from the present moment.
It is the very resistance
to the present moment.

So another way to look at it
is that you relinquish the idea of yourself
to realize the present moment,
to realize your are the present moment

and in this
you are free from suffering.

For however long
you can remain
free from thought identification
resting in your natural state
of pure awareness
there is peace.

And every time
you drop into pure awareness
this peace expands
and floods into
all aspects of your life.

Blessings,

Kip"

There's a Zen story in which a disciple asks the master, they're walking out in nature going on a hike, and the disciple asks the Master, "How do I enter Zen?"

The question means, how do I enter the state of consciousness that is Zen?

And the Master says, "Can you hear the sound of that mountain stream?"

And the disciple begins to listen.  At first he doesn't hear anything because it is so distant.  He listens.  "Yes, Master I can hear it."

And the master says, "Enter Zen from there."

"Okay."

And then they walk on in silence.  Two hours later, by then the disciple's mind has started again, "Master, I've been thinking.  What if I had said, 'no, I can't hear the mountain stream, what would you have said then?'"

And the Master says - raising his finger -, "Disciple."

"Yes Master."

"Enter Zen from there."

Form is none other than formlessness

Awareness is who you really are prior to form (i.e., concepts, content). Awareness is naturally spacious and non-conceptual.  Identification with form happens when there is no realization of this simple formless awareness.  Thought is believed totally including all the divisions and boundaries that come with it.

Once this simple awareness is realized, thoughts continue to arise.  There is still content, personal history, and a body/mind but there is no longer identification with these 'things.'  You stop believing your thoughts simply because it is seen that thought (form) is none other than awareness (formlessness).  This is seeing through the dualism of awareness and thought.  There are not two here.  Thoughts that used to seem so important are now seen as just as empty as the awareness from which they emanate.

What is being said here is purely conceptual.  There is nothing to believe in these words.  Believing these words would be identification with form.  The experience of liberation is much simpler than any explanation of it.

This is about seeing the true nature of reality.  Once it is seen that your fundamental nature is emptiness, you see that all form is essentially empty.  All divisions and boundaries are seen through in this realization.  That is Oneness.  Divisions and boundaries are essentially thought-created.  In this seeing, love naturally arises.  Love sees no real boundaries and yet it respects apparent boundaries.

Chapter 4

Fact:  Consciousness is the Infinite Itself

(Continuation...)

[As there is no other being alive besides the Life I Am, there is no other to ignore this simple and immediate solution to all "racial problems."]

Keep going as Invisible-I only, which is the One Self I Am. See what else is true of the Alive Presence I Am, all alone, entirely apart from what is sensed. Don't be timid, for this is your very I-Presence speaking.

Is it possible to poke a hole in this Formless Aliveness I Am, or cut out a portion, as with a cookie-cutter, and call it a personal life, one separate from Aliveness? Aliveness-I cannot be cut; there is nothing solid about I to be cut. Aliveness is indivisible. As I have no parts, I never can be parted, or de-parted. Aliveness has no physical con-struction, so isn't subject to de-struction.

The Presence Portal

From PART V:

6.

(Continuation...)

Just as our breathing sessions enable us to efficiently leap into the resonance of a past NOW, they also enable us to leap into the resonance of a future NOW. For example, when we have an important event scheduled, we bring greater Presence into the occasion by dedicating a consciously connected breathing session to it. We are not to approach this task with such a clear agenda of what we wish to achieve that we end up resorting to control-tactics. This only causes frustration. Instead, we say to ourselves, "We are now breathing ourselves in preparation for the important meeting (if it is a meeting) taking place in three days from now".

The Ease Of Being

(Continuation...)

[For some time it tries to manipulate its experience in order to yield Happiness, without yet understanding that Happiness and the separate entity are mutually exclusive positions.]

However, after some time of playing the game of being a separate entity, Consciousness begins to tire. It longs for something more substantial than the fleeting and precarious moments of Happiness that seem to be at the mercy of innumerable causes that are apparently outside its control.

Having exhausted the conventional possibilities of securing Happiness, Consciousness-pretending-to-be-a-separate-entity searches in other, less familiar territory. One version of this is the spiritual search.

However, sooner or later, gradually or instantaneously, Consciousness comes to recognise that it is already precisely what it is looking for, and that it is the search itself that prevents this realisation.

Chapter 88

Knowledge by the Mind, is not True Knowledge

(Continuation...)

Q:Do you want me to struggle all alone?

M:You are never alone. There are powers and presences who serve you all the time most faithfully. You may or may not perceive them, nevertheless they are real and active. When you realize that all is in your mind and that you are beyond the mind, that you are truly alone; then all is you.
