The Fundamentals of Meditation

"The reason why you suffer
is because you unconsciously
avoid this moment.

You are unconsciously
but constantly resisting
this moment;
separating yourself from
this moment.

So the path of awareness in meditation
is to get you back to this moment.

And the first part of meditation
is to sit still.

Because the most
physical way you avoid this
moment is by being restless
in the body.

It does not mean
that you cannot be present
while moving.

But for this meditation,
the first part is to sit still
and allow that resistance
to sitting still
be burned away
in awareness.

The second and
main way you avoid
this moment
is through identifying
with your thinking.

You are sitting still
yet you are thinking
about what you have
to do tomorrow.

The thought itself
does not take you out of this moment,
but your identifying with the thought
does.

The thought arises
"I have to go to work tomorrow"
and you are the "I" in that sentence.

And like you are in a dream,
you are lost in the imagination
of tomorrow.

You have successfully
escaped this moment.

This is identification.

Even thinking about
being present
keeps you from being present.

So then the second part
is to learn to either
witness your thinking,

let go of your thinking,

inquire into what is here
beyond thinking,

rest your attention on the bliss
that is here beyond thinking

or to even focus thought
by repeating a mantra.

Any of these methods
are to help keep you present
or at least give you a taste
of the present moment.

But the truth of it is that
you cannot be present.

The "you" who you think you are,
is that which is separate
from the present moment.
It is the very resistance
to the present moment.

So another way to look at it
is that you relinquish the idea of yourself
to realize the present moment,
to realize your are the present moment

and in this
you are free from suffering.

For however long
you can remain
free from thought identification
resting in your natural state
of pure awareness
there is peace.

And every time
you drop into pure awareness
this peace expands
and floods into
all aspects of your life.

Blessings,

Kip"

[Lets go back to the ever present sound of rain.  And the really ever present stillness around it.

The stillness that's around it is within and without, strange.]

Spend the evening in presence as much as you can.  Presence.  Maybe, tomorrow I believe we're having an evening meditation also.  And tonight you can, perhaps after dinner, spend some time in the sanctuary for a beautiful meditation, a deeper meditation.  Or stay here, or be in your cabin if you don't suffer from cabin fever, which is a mind condition.  (laughter)

If you absolutely cannot stand it, you could read one or two pages from a spiritual book.  Somebody asked me at the retreat last year, when we had silent periods, could we play chess, with my wife, could I play chess?  I don't know enough about chess to know whether you can play chess in a state of stillness, or whether the mind is totally active.  What's my next move?  Better not.  (laughter)

Free to feel

When there is identification with thought, the mind is trying to figure life out conceptually.  It creates belief systems out of fear of the unknown.  It defends its beliefs and tries to convince others that its beliefs are right.  Identification with thought creates and maintains separation.

What the dualistic mind is ultimately doing is defending and strengthening a me that is based in fear.  The mind rationalizes, justifies, blames, analyzes, and judges life as it is happening in some attempt to gain control and knowledge about
what is happening.  The mind believes that, in controlling, resisting, and knowing, the me will survive.

The me is a dream..  It stays alive only through constant identification with thought and emotion.  The incessant mind activity keeps feelings from being felt directly.  For example, in the moment a fearful thought arises, the actual fear in the body isn't felt.  When the fear isn't felt, it fuels more thoughts about the future including about what will happen or how a scenario will turn out.

In liberation, identification with thought
is gone.  The me illusion is seen through.  Therefore, the incessant movement to rationalize, justify, blame, analyze, believe, and judge dies.  There is a freedom to feel directly whatever emotions
arise without having to "think" them away.  When there is a freedom to feel emotions directly, those emotions do not accumulate over time.  They come and go freely.  There is no me to hold onto them.

Chapter 4

Fact:  Consciousness is the Infinite Itself

(Continuation...)

Then can You ignore what is true of Your Infinite I-Self and assume You are limited to one particular race of bodies? Can the Awareness You are say Its outlook isn't absolutely pure and clear, but is "colored" merely because of the color on one particular body-thing now holding this book? No! Awareness-I is changelessly pure.

When you appear to be aware of a white tulip, a black tulip, or a yellow or red tulip, you certainly don't assume that tulip, that thing, is you. Just as you are not a tulip of any color, you are not a body of any color. The pure, clear Conscious I that You are now aware of being, never is the body that appears to be holding this book.

Can you imagine tulips arguing because one doesn't approve of the other's color?

Excerpts From "Being Our Companion:  Exploring Self-Facilitation Through The Presence Process"

The Presence Portal

Michael Brown

From PART V:

6. After completing the entire Process, aside from    our 15 minutes breathing twice a day, are there other circumstances that we respond to by             breathing ourselves?

(Continuation...)

Another application of the breathing practice exists. This is called time-jumping. It is a means to breathe our intent more powerfully into our future NOW's. We already wield consciously connected breathing in this way (TPP/Pg 180) as a means to adjust our past NOW's, as our inner child work. Inner child work enables us to enter ourselves and energetically move our awareness to the point of a certain childhood experience to change its resonance. The moment we change its resonance, by updating our interpretation of what we perceived to be unfolding in that moment according to our state of awareness NOW, we change the resonance of our experiences as they are unfolding in the present moment. Because everything is connected, changing the resonance of any childhood interpretation initiates a domino effect which ripples into this moment.

The Ease Of Being

(Continuation...)

[This exclusive identification may be natural but it is not essential. Nothing imposes this exclusivity on Consciousness. Nothing compels it.]

The state of identification with a single body/mind is part of Consciousness' repertoire, but it is not its original condition or its only possibility.

Consciousness is Freedom, and amongst the freedoms at its disposal is the freedom to identify or disidentify itself.

Its natural condition is free from exclusive identification, but it is free to identify itself exclusively with a body/mind, in order to enjoy and suffer what that has to offer.

Knowledge by the Mind, is not True Knowledge

(Continuation...)

Q:I have not yet understood why, if nothing stands in the way of liberation, it does not happen here and now.

M:Nothing stands in the way of your liberation and it can happen here and now, but for your being more interested in other things. And you cannot fight with your interests. You must go with them, see through them and watch them reveal themselves as mere errors of judgment and appreciation.
