The Fundamentals of Meditation

"The reason why you suffer
is because you unconsciously
avoid this moment.

You are unconsciously
but constantly resisting
this moment;
separating yourself from
this moment.

So the path of awareness in meditation
is to get you back to this moment.

And the first part of meditation
is to sit still.

Because the most
physical way you avoid this
moment is by being restless
in the body.

It does not mean
that you cannot be present
while moving.

But for this meditation,
the first part is to sit still
and allow that resistance
to sitting still
be burned away
in awareness.

The second and
main way you avoid
this moment
is through identifying
with your thinking.

You are sitting still
yet you are thinking
about what you have
to do tomorrow.

The thought itself
does not take you out of this moment,
but your identifying with the thought
does.

The thought arises
"I have to go to work tomorrow"
and you are the "I" in that sentence.

And like you are in a dream,
you are lost in the imagination
of tomorrow.

You have successfully
escaped this moment.

This is identification.

Even thinking about
being present
keeps you from being present.

So then the second part
is to learn to either
witness your thinking,

let go of your thinking,

inquire into what is here
beyond thinking,

rest your attention on the bliss
that is here beyond thinking

or to even focus thought
by repeating a mantra.

Any of these methods
are to help keep you present
or at least give you a taste
of the present moment.

But the truth of it is that
you cannot be present.

The "you" who you think you are,
is that which is separate
from the present moment.
It is the very resistance
to the present moment.

So another way to look at it
is that you relinquish the idea of yourself
to realize the present moment,
to realize your are the present moment

and in this
you are free from suffering.

For however long
you can remain
free from thought identification
resting in your natural state
of pure awareness
there is peace.

And every time
you drop into pure awareness
this peace expands
and floods into
all aspects of your life.

Blessings,

Kip"

[They faced death.  And saw.]

They faced also during the retreat.  As you sit here you are also facing a kind of death but it is beautiful when the egoic entity dies. The form identity dies.  I can speak of the reality of death, not as a belief because I know it.  The form hasn't died yet but the psychological form died. And it's...  And later when I read accounts of people who faced death, I said, they report exactly what happened to me, when they faced physical death.  Exactly what happened to me when I faced psychological death.  "Isn't that interesting?"  It's the same, whether death is psychological or physical.  So, with that comes acceptance.  Not believing that death shouldn't happen, it happens.

Don't believe what 'spiritual teachers' say

There is ultimately no such thing as a spiritual teacher or spiritual seeker until thought arises to tell that story of separation.  The mind projects thoughts onto reality.  We call this a 'building,' that a 'teacher,' this a 'Republican,' and that 'enlightenment.'  That is a dream of thought.  Nothing wrong with it.  No need to deny it.  It's beautiful.  But separation isn't ultimately true.

Notice the tendency to believe what so-called teachers say.  Enlightenment is not a belief.  It is not an idea that you memorize and carry around like a belief in Santa Claus.  If you believe what teachers are saying, you will likely miss what is being pointed to.  There are many expressions of this inexpressible realization.  Getting caught up in comparing and contrasting the messages only keeps the mind in the false notion that This can be grasped intellectually.

The words are pointing beyond adherence to the words, to the immediate experiencing of what you are and what life is beyond your ideas about that.

You are a set of past thoughts, beliefs, opinions, perspectives, and feelings to which awareness has attached.  When that separate self is seen through, there is only This - a totally alive mystery.  The portal to This is now.  In this moment, the past is seen to be nothing more than presently arising thought.  There is no way to teach what is.  All spiritual teachings are past thoughts.  Second-hand knowledge.

Chapter 4

Fact:  Consciousness is the Infinite Itself

(Continuation...)

I never is personal. Clearly no person, no body, knows how to make I be present, be the Consciousness It is. If one did know, how did he produce I, Consciousness? What did he use to be conscious in the meantime while producing Consciousness?

Always, It is the Infinite, Consciousness, or Life Itself, that is the only

I. Never is there a personal I having to become more infinite, more conscious. There is no other, throughout the entirety of Existence, that can say or be this I. Only Infinite Life Itself is alive to say "I." Life's I-Presence also is intelligent, for It knows that It is. It alone is the One knowing Its nature here, now-for nothing else is conscious to know It.

Excerpts From "Being Our Companion:  Exploring Self-Facilitation Through The Presence Process"

The Presence Portal

Michael Brown
Michael Brown

From PART V:

6. After completing the entire Process, aside from    our 15 minutes breathing twice a day, are there other circumstances that we respond to by             breathing ourselves?

(Continuation...)

When we live an examined life by choosing to process our unresolved past, more often than not, these unfamiliar experiences surface because they are energies in our emotional body requiring our compassionate attention. Often these unfamiliar energies seep into our awareness because our daily breathing exercise is enabling them to surface. When we then react to them by charging into a connected breathing session in an attempt to change the experience, we are misusing the breathing; then it is becoming a tool of reaction and distraction. When we are already breathing twice a day, more often than not, the best course of action to follow when we feel increased discomfort in our energetic field is to take time out to feel what is surfacing. We are therefore to use our intuition to gauge when to breathe, and when to feel. After having read this, we will now intuitively know when we are using the breathing as a tool of reaction or distraction.

The Ease Of Being

(Continuation...)

[These moments in between the appearance of objects are in fact timeless. They are neither linked together nor separated by time or space.]

Happiness is not a fleeting appearance in the permanent substratum of time and space. Rather time and space are fleeting appearances within the permanent substratum of timeless, spaceless Presence.

Deep sleep is simply another name for this timeless, spaceless Presence. Like Happiness, it is causeless. Falling asleep is the most effortless thing. In fact it is impossible to make an effort to fall asleep. It is the cessation of a previous effort that allows deep sleep.

Exactly the same is true of Consciousness. The natural state is not to be exclusively identified with anything. It requires an effort to dentify Consciousness exclusively with the body or the mind.

Chapter 88

Knowledge by the Mind, is not True Knowledge

(Continuation...)

Q:You told us the other day that we cannot even dream of perfection before realization, for the Self is the source of all perfection and not the mind. If it is not excellence in virtue that is essential for liberation, then what is?

M:Liberation is not the result of some means skillfully applied, nor of circumstances. It is beyond the causal process. Nothing can compel it, nothing can prevent it.

Q:Then why are we not free here and now?

M:But we are free 'here and now'. It is only the mind that imagines bondage.
