Pediatric Obesity Section

Welcome to the Pediatric Obesity Section Newsletter!

Alison FieldGreetings from the TOS Pediatric Section!  We hope you enjoyed the Annual Meeting in Orlando and were able to attend our Section business meeting and luncheon.  Dr. Nancy Butte, recipient of the 2011 Bar-Or Award, gave an excellent talk entitled, "Energetics of Childhood Obesity".

The POS Council also wants to thank all of you who were able to complete the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) survey and submit proposal ideas for the 2012 Obesity Society meeting.  It's been a busy time! In case you missed those announcements, we've provided additional information for you in this newsletter and you can find them on the website as well at http://www.obesity.org/about-us/pediatric-obesity.htm.

The POS Council is also busy planning for the 2012 meeting.  We are starting new fundraising efforts to support travel fellowships and pilot studies. We are also expanding collaborations with other societies, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and hope to update you on our progress in the next newsletter.

Lastly, we've included a few highlights on major initiatives that have recently been launched.

Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the POS Leadership

NEW! Systems-Oriented Pediatric Obesity Research and Training (SPORT) Center of Excellence

Congratulations to Dr. Youfa Wang (POS Council 10/10-10/12)! Dr. Wang recently received a U54 grant to establish a Center of Excellence for Systems-Oriented Pediatric Obesity Research and Training (SPORT), funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).  This new center will utilize a transdisciplinary systems science framework, systems-based methodologies, and spatial analysis to study the complex etiology of childhood obesity and the impacts of environmental and policy interventions.  It will also establish an innovative infrastructure for related research and training, and support new pilot projects.

National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) Food, Activity, Sleep, Sun-Safety, and Tobacco Behaviors Survey

The National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) is supporting the development of the FASST survey, a tool designed to assess correlates of obesogenic and cancer-preventive behaviors (mainly diet, activity, and sedentary behaviors) as well as other behaviors (e.g., sleep, sun safety, tobacco) among parent-adolescent dyads.  You can find out more about this new NCCOR project on their website: http://www.nccor.org/projects_FASST_survey.html.
