Dear Bariatric Surgery Section Members,

We hope that you've had an enjoyable and productive summer.  We are happy to provide a number of updates in our newsletter.
Please join us in congratulating Lee M. Kaplan, MD, PhD who has been selected as Chair-Elect of the Bariatric Surgery Section. At our upcoming annual meeting, Adrienne Youdim, MD will ascend to the position of Chair and Dr. Kaplan will work with the Section executive committee as Chair-Elect. Dr. Kaplan has previously led our Section program committee.

We are hoping that you will be able to attend Obesity 2011, the 29th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Obesity Society in Orlando, FL (October 1-5). As a reminder, if you register online by September 16, you'll receive a discounted rate.

Our section meeting will be from 12:15-2:15pm on Tuesday, October 4 and we've planned an informal yet informative agenda. Incoming TOS president, Patrick O'Neil, PhD, will be meeting with our group for a question and answer session on our Section's involvement in TOS and how the Bariatric Surgery Section can further contribute to TOS's upcoming goals.  An update on the 2013 Obesity Week will be provided by Dr. Schauer and a discussion of NIH and other funding resources for bariatric research will conclude the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there.

We'd also like to draw our membership's attention to sessions at the annual meeting that may be of interest. Although there will be numerous paper and poster sessions that focus on surgical treatment for obesity and metabolic disease, the following symposia will likely be of interest to our members: On Sunday, October 2 there will be a debate entitled "Drugs, Surgery or Behavior: Place Your Bets!" at 1:45-2:45pm. From 3:15-4:45pm on Monday, October 3, another debate will focus on "FDA Lowers Indication for Lap Band: Yay or Nay!"

Finally, please take a few minutes to complete our survey on Section goals and what you'd like to achieve from your membership. Our survey two years ago was highly instructive in plans for our annual Section meeting and was shared with the TOS Council.  Please click here to take the survey.  Please submit your responses by midnight Friday, September 30.

Best Regards,

Phil Schauer, MD - Chair

Adrienne Youdim, MD - Chair-Elect

Leslie Heinberg, PhD - Secretary/Treasurer
