WorkCover Premium Increase
The Queensland Government has proposed changes to the workers' compensation scheme. The changes aim to address the growth in common law claims and costs, while raising Work Cover premiums on average from about $1.15 per every $100 of wages to $1.30.
Through the changes the Queensland government aims to achieve the following:
- Secure WorkCover's financial stability;
- Penalise employers with poor safety records through premiums above the cap;
- Address the growth in common law claims and claims costs; and
- Investigate the possibility of introducing a workers' compensation levy system for the construction industry.
How this will affect your business, or be achieved, is still unclear, but it is estimated that the reforms will be submitted to parliament in mid 2010.
At the end of 2012, success of the reforms will be assessed to determine whether further, more significant reforms are needed.
