Health and Safety Compliance Checks for Medium Sized Businesses
In 2010 and 2011 Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Inspectors will be conducting audits of all medium size businesses against the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995. Inspectors normally do not attend workplaces unless an incident has occurred or a complaint has been lodged. This increased presence forms part of the Queensland Health and Safety Strategy which aims to reduce work-related injuries by 40% and work-related fatalities by 20%, by 2012. Inspectors will be able to use all their powers and enforcement options including issuing improvement, prohibition or infringement (on the spot fine) notices.
Your company can prepare for the inspectorate's visit by ensuring that up to date systems are in place and effectively implemented to manage health and safety. Conducting internal audits will give an indicator of how your organisation will perform at an inspection and identify areas for improvement.
