Greetings!
Welcome to the second issue of the Opportunity Show newsletter. Spring has arrived and with it the slightest optimism has crept into the national consciousness. In this issue Mark Monchek, TOS Publisher, takes a look at how a crisis can propel us to make changes for the better. When we let go of our fear of change, even a worldwide recession can be viewed in a positive light. What can you do to use the current recession as an opportunity? We offer ten direct actions that will help entrepreneurs and companies succeed in these challenging times. And because opportunity is always around us, we present a look at businesses that actually thrive when the economy turns south. Enjoy, learn, and don't forget to prove that you're smarter than a fourth grader! |

Crisis, or Opportunity?
By Mark Monchek
This Memorial Day didn't seem that different than most. The traffic on the way home was lighter, but the outlet mall off Route 80 was bustling with shoppers and the supermarket was as full as I've seen it on a Sunday afternoon at 5PM. It's not easy to detect that there's a major league recession going on; the worst economy since the Great Depression most say.
Something profound has happened to us as a nation. Our challenge now is whether we make a healthy adaptation or an unhealthy one. We can wait for the crisis to pass and go back to business as usual or we can seize the opportunity to change the fundamental way our system works.

The Beneficiaries of the Downturn
By ROB COX and ALIZA ROSENBAUM www.breakingviews.com
There's money to be made from poverty. That may sound uncharitable, especially at this time of year. But the fact is, when people lose their jobs, buy cheaper goods and default on their loans, someone has to do the dirty work - and those companies can get well paid for doing it.
So breakingviews.com developed the Poor Getting Poorer Index - a basket of 22 equal-weighted stocks that includes the retailers, white-label manufacturers, repossession agencies, dollar stores, pawnshops and other public companies poised to capitalize on rising poverty. This year the index would have generated a positive return of about 9 percent, easily outperforming the 40 percent decline of the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index.

10 Steps to Survive a Recession

Businesses that take 10 important steps have a better chance of emerging from the current recession in a position to succeed, according to The Forum Corp., a Boston-based consulting firm that helps organizations execute strategy through people.
"By looking at past recessions, we've identified 10 steps that can make the difference between success and failure in managing through our current downturn, and they all come back to leadership," said Ed Boswell, CEO of The Forum Corp. "Following these steps will be particularly valuable in organizations that are undergoing cost-cutting and layoffs, which challenge managers to do more with less."

Don't Blink: Really Listen
by Andrew Levine
Malcolm Gladwell is on a roll. All three of his books have been New York Times number one best sellers, and his latest, Outliers:The Story of Success (Little, Brown & Company, 2008) may be his most ambitious and thought provoking effort to date. Like The Tipping Point (2000) and Blink (2005), Gladwell has that rare ability to make us see the world a little differently. While Outliers is getting most of the attention these days, I went back to re-read Blink and found it particularly resonant for the way we think about opportunity in business. Blink is largely about a concept called thin-slicing. Gladwell defines it as "the ability of our unconscious to find patterns in situations and behavior based on very narrow slices of experience."

The cost to US taxpayers of the Savings and Loan bailout of the 1980's (approximately $176 Billion) would have bought a $50,000 home for every homeless person in America ("As many as 3.5 million people experience homelessness in a given year" according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). |
