In the old days, the library came to you in a horse-drawn wagon -- and the bookmobile still travels all over the county.  But we also come to you through the internet, in lots of different ways ... check us out!

Library Events

Eat Out and Support Your Library!

To celebrate National Library Week, Ruby Tuesday will donate 20% of your purchase to the Library if you have a meal at their Wesel Blvd. location and present this coupon on April 9, 10, 11, 17, 18, or 19.

The fundraiser supports our annual Reading Day at the Valley Mall on Saturday, May 5 - mark your calendar!

Reading Day activities will begin at 10:00 AM. Children are invited to come dressed as what they want to be when they grow up and join in the opening parade beginning in front of Bon Ton at 10:15 AM. The morning's activities include visits by children's authors Mary Amato and Erica S. Perl.  Master of ceremonies Michael T will present two magic shows. Look for more details in the May Newsletter.

Mapping the past: Sanborn Maps online

logo for Sanborn Maps What could be so interesting about fire insurance maps from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries? Plenty! Digital Sanborn Maps for Maryland show how our cities and towns have developed. What buildings were there in past times? How was a building used? When was a road realigned? Since at least two maps from different points in time are normally available for each place, it's possible to see how a community has changed over the years.

For homeowners, these maps offer the possibility of learning when an addition was put on, another story added, log changed to brick, or a stable replaced with a storage shed - all of interest to those who wish to learn the history of their home. For beginning genealogists, the maps offer a glimpse into the lives of earlier generations and the world that they experienced. Maps for seventeen cities and towns across Western Maryland are included: in Washington County that includes Boonsboro, Clear Spring, Hagerstown, Hancock, Sharpsburg, Smithsburg, & Williamsport.

This service is provided by the Western Maryland Regional Library to the public libraries of Allegany, Garrett, and Washington County.  Find this and many other valuable online resources on our database page.
