Walmart Canada is running the Green Student Challenge where teams of post-secondary students from across the country have an opportunity to convince some of Canada's most successful business leaders that they have the most compelling breakthrough idea to change business as we know it.  A total of $100,000 in cash will be awarded including $25,000 to the winners and $25,000 to the winners' school. JFSUSTAINABLE FURNITURE PROJECT WITH JANE/FINCH
Aviva Community Fund - York needs your votes to help fund the Centre for Green Change!

Please vote everyday until October 15th for the Aviva Community Fund project to help fund the new Centre for Green Change at Jane and Finch.

Design and Build Sustainable Furniture for the Centre for Green Change!  

Come join us on Monday, October 15, 2012 for the sustainable furniture design workshop that will be held for the Centre for Green Change Project. The designed pieces are for the new space at 2999 Jane Street. Furniture building workshops will follow on November 2 and 3rd. We are especially looking for students, staff and faculty with carpentry skills to help out. Read more...
INTERESTED IN ATTENDING COP 18?
18th United Nations climate change conference and the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) will be held from Nov. 26 to Dec. 7 in the State of Qatar.!

   

York community members interested in attending COP 18 should fill out the application form by Tuesday, October 9th at noon. Please note IRIS can assist you to find funds, but unfortunately for this COP we have no IRIS funds at this time to distribute.

OCT 5: ONLINE INTERACTIVE PRESENTATION

Professor David Bell & LSF Chair Discusses the Challenges of Sustainability and the Role of ESD

Register today to join the interactive online presentation on Friday, October 5th from 12-1pm. 
 
Dr. Bell will focus on the role of educators as
facilitators of learning. After outlining the scope and nature of the sustainability challenge in terms of its economic, environmental and social dimensions, Professor Bell proposes that we discuss the kinds of teaching and learning that will likely be required in response to the challenge.

UNCONFERENCE FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE!
Are YoU a Climate Zombie? How can we walk together?

Come take action with us on Thursday October 25th at 280N York Lanes from 10:00am - 3:00pm for an open discussion on climate change. 

   

The purpose of this climate justice unconference is to create a forum for students, staff, and faculty to have open conversations around climate justice issues. The end goal is to create opportunities to work together in order to take action both personally and here at York University.

PROFESSOR DEBORAH CURRAN VISITS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA
Green Development Law in Canada: New forms of property or same old dirt?

Join us on Thursday October 25th 1:30 - 2:30pm at Room 1001 Osgoode Hall to hear Hakai Professor of Environmental Law and Sustainability, Deborah Curran. 

 

Using green development case studies from British Columbia, this talk will highlight the legal innovations and burdens that sustainability development offers for both the public interest and private property.

CONGRATULATIONS DR. KEVIN MCKAGUE ON THE SUCCESSFUL DEFENCE OF HIS DISSERTATION

Kevin McKague defends his PhD - "Making markets work for the poor"      

Congratulations to long-time IRIS Senior Research Fellow, now Dr. Kevin McKague, on a successful defence of his dissertation last week.

 

Kevin's research has focused on micro finance and farmers in Bangladesh. Click here to read more on his work!

BED/MED STUDENT WORKSHOP & VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Calling all Faculty of Education Students 

An evening workshop for Teacher Candidates and Masters of Education students on experiential learning with a focus on education for sustainable development. 

Work with a teacher and their classroom, at a local priority neighbourhood school. The workshop will provide professional development training on how to facilitate an action project with your chosen classroom on an issue that they choose.

POETRY EVENT ON NOVA SCOTIA'S SABLE RIVER
E. Alex Pierce reads at the FES Sustainable Writing Lab

Come out on Monday October 29th from 12:45-2:00 pm to see E. Alex Pierce as she reads from her new volume of poetry, Vox Humana, which is a passionate exploration of Nova Scotia's Sable River. This reading is part of the activities of the FES Sustainable Writing Laboratory. Read more... 

PRESIDENT'S SUSTAINABILITY COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT RELEASED

IRIS recognized as one of the key campus partners in sustainability!  

The 2011-12 report summarizes progress York University has made towards implementing the 59 recommendations the President's Sustainability Council (PSC) has made to the University over the past three years. It also includes 12 new recommendations that were advanced by the working groups of the council over the past year. Download the report to learn more.
