The Buzz this Month!

It's May and welcome to the seventh edition of the Torrance Centennial eNewsletter!  Do you know how hard the Committee has been working to bring you wonderful family events and activities to enjoy?  Of course you do!  That's because you've been very supportive of their efforts beginning with Lights, Camera, Action!  In fact, I know each and everyone of you, along with family and friends, purchased a Commemorative Personalized Brick to help build the Centennial Plaza and El Prado Park.  So on behalf of the Committee, thank you for your support!

April was an exciting time as our great city was beautified by volunteers throughout the community.  Residents and friends alike took to the streets and helped to restore the brilliant

shine of Jared Sidney Torrance's dream.  Thanks for keeping Torrance a City with a hometown feel!  This month, the fun continues with
Students in Government Day, Torrance Council of PTAs  Centennial Scholarship Brunch, Mayor Frank Scotto's State of the City Address, and Torrance Historical Society Veterans Memorial Wall
Re-dedication.

And you know I have to remind you, we've got Centennial programs on-demand produced by our very own CitiCABLE. May features:  Planting of the Delphiniums, the Torrance Advantage Awards Ceremony, Jared Sidney Torrance Award Recipients LookBack: Al Isen & Sam Levy, Torrance High School - Landmark & Beaux Arts Masterpiece, TPAC Celebrating 100 Years of the Art, History of the Armed Forces Day Parade, The Southern Pacific Railroad Bridge, Tour of Old

Torrance Historic Homes - The Kelsey House, Palos Verdes Bowl - A Blast From The Past, and much more!  See the debut of each new program on Thursday's at 7 p.m.

It's our centennial year and also a great time to reminisce and reflect on our City's rich traditions. Our 53rd Annual Armed Forces Day Celebration & Parade is right around the corner (May 18-20, Parade on May 19), this year, we honore the United States Air Force led by Grand Marshal, Secretary of the U.S. Air Force, Michael B. Donley. Now, take a look back at our past Grand Marshals , or click on the photo to check out the Torrance Herald from May 19, 1963.

CENTURY CLUB

By Torrance Youth Council/Torrance Centennial Committee

Ione Strum Rice (102) was born on August 23, 1909 in Los Angeles. After graduating from USC she became a high school foreign language teacher.  Most of her teaching career was in the South Bay.

While teaching at Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, Ione met and later married Vernon Rice, the principal at the school. After they wed, Vernon stayed at Leuzinger High and Ione moved to Inglewood High to continue her teaching career.  They raised 2 sons.  Mrs. Rice is very proud that the auditorium at Leuzinger High is named after her husband.

After her husband passed away in 1980, Ione moved to New Horizons where she has been a resident for the past 32 years.  For many years, she was a member of the Torrance Adult School's Writing Class, "Life Story."

Ione enjoys Torrance because she is able to live in her own home and is surrounded by many good friends.  She believes she has lived to be 102 because she stayed physically active for many years.   She took pleasure in playing tennis and especially enjoyed swimming in the ocean. "It was fun swimming way out and catching a ride back on a wave," said Ione.
