The Buzz this Month!

Welcome to April and the sixth edition of the Torrance Centennial eNEWSLETTER!  Torrance has really been buzzing lately with all of the great family fun activities and events since our kick-off in October, and we've been having a wonderful time with all of the celebrations!

April brings the One Book/One City Series to various Torrance Libraries along with the City-wide Beautification supported by homeowers associations and community organizations, and

rounding out the month with The Arts of Torrance in the Past 100 Years by the Torrance Performing Arts Consortium.  There's a lot happening this month, so don't hesitate-- get involved!

If you're looking for something more than video on demand or the latest reality show from your cable company, why not take a look at some of the Centennial programs produced by our very own CitiCABLE?

April will feature:  Planting of the Delphiniums, the 5th Annual Torrance Advantage Awards Ceremony, Jared Sydney Torrance Award Recipients Look Back: Al Isen & Sam Levy, and the Riviera Community Hospital.  See the debut of each new program, Thursday's at 7 p.m.  You can also go to TorranceCentennial.Org/or TorranceCA.Gov/CableTV/23738.htm. There are many more features on-demand.

We have surpassed the halfway point in our
Commemorative Personalized Brick sales, yet we've got more to sell!  If you haven't purchased one for yourself or family, please consider doing so now.  We also encourage you to motivate your community groups, business, and organizations involved.  It would be great if all of our community was part of building our brand new Torrance Centennial Plaza at El Prado Park.

The Plaza incorporates bricks that you can purchase for only $150.  Each brick sale will help fund the building of the Plaza.  Don't be left out, order your brick today!  Fill out this form or pay in person at the City's Torrance Community Services Department in the West Annex of City Hall.

LOOKING BACK

Check out the Torrance Herald from June 20, 1936 as they reflect back on the success of Torrance. What was their recipe?

"INDUSTRY, business, residences. Mix them, apply a proper proportion of sound management, stir in plenty of ambition and -- You've got a city!

That has been the recipe for Torrance's amazing success"

CENTURY CLUB

By Torrance Youth Council/Torrance Centennial Committee

Yoshi Inose (103) was born on September 24, 1908 in Los Angeles, CA.  Her father was one of first 3 publishers of the Japanese newspaper, Rafu Shimpo. Yoshi moved to Japan at age 6 and returned to Los Angeles to learn English in 1926 at age 18. In 1932 she married Seijiro Inose in Japan and they returned to Los Angeles shortly after.

From 1946-1985 Yoshi and Seijiro along with their son and 3 daughters, had a nursery business in Gardena.  After selling the business, the family in 1987 moved to a home in Torrance where Yoshi has continued to live for 25 years.

Since 1979 Yoshi has been a master teacher of the Japanese tea ceremony.  She is an excellent seamstress and still continues to sew.  She is a member of the Japanese Women's Society of Southern California.

Yoshi likes Torrance because of her "nice neighborhood," convenience to shopping and the good weather.  Besides having a very supportive family which includes her children and their spouses, 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, Yoshi believes she has lived to be 103 because of teaching the tea ceremony combined with her daily green vegetable drink that has, "kept her mind sharp."  Yoshi is especially proud that 4 generations of her family have graduated from USC.
