THE BUZZ THIS MONTH!
It's March and welcome to the fifth edition of the Torrance Centennial eNewsletter! I hope you enjoyed the various events in February. We've been having a wonderful time with all of the celebrations!
March brings the Works in Progress Visionaries series to life, featuring Mother Jones a celebrated labor organizer
and agitator in the early 20th century.
Join us for a riviting performance by Penny Orloff at the Nakano Theatre, Torrance Cultural Arts Center. Call the box office at 310.781.7171 for ticket information.
If you're looking for something more
than video on demand or the latest reality show from your cable company, why not take a look at some of the Centennial programs produced by our very own CitiCABLE? They have produced programs about our founder, Jared Sydney Torrance, Mayor's Miller, Hardison, Walker, and Scotto; tours of historic homes, Torrance landmarks, the Hollywood Riviera and much much more! A new program debuts every Thursday at 7 p.m. You can also go to TorranceCentennial.Org/My/Story and follow the links!
We have reached the halfway point in our Commemorative Personalized Brick sales, yet we've got more to sell! If you haven't purchased one for yourself or family, please consider doing so now. We also encourage you to motivate your community groups, business, and organizations involved. It would be great if all of our community was part of the building of our brand new Torrance Centennial Plaza at El Prado Park. The Plaza incorporates bricks that you can purchase for only $150. Each brick sale will help fund the building of the Plaza. Don't be left out, order your brick today! Fill out this form or pay in person at the City's Torrance Community Services Department in the West Annex of City Hall.

LOOKING BACK
For those of you who now live in or have ever lived in Southwood Homes - you were in the Heart of Everything!
A short item in the October 14, 1954 Torrance Press reported, "GIANT TRACT: Planning Commission approved a tentative map for 1352 homes planned by Milton Kaufman Corporation west of Hawthorne Avenue between Torrance Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard. More than 2000 homes are planned eventually."
Can you find your house style?

Many thanks to West Torrance resident Arthur Evans
for sharing the brochure with us.

CENTURY CLUB
By Torrance Youth Council/Torrance Centennial Committee
Gladys Braach (101) was born on February 5, 1911 in Oakdale, Nebraska. She married Kenneth Braach in the late 1920's and they moved to a farm in O'Neill, Nebraska where they raised 2 girls and 3 boys.
In 1953 Gladys and Kenneth moved to Redondo Beach, California to be closer to a daughter who lived there and because of the health issues of one of the sons. After her husband passed away, she moved in 1969 to Torrance where she has resided in the same home for 43 years.
Gladys is a long-time member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and still attends regularly. In the past, she was very active in the women's groups of the church making homemade items for the needy. She is especially known for her knitting skills. Gladys likes Torrance because of long-time neighbors, supportive family and the good weather that we have. She believes she has lived to be 101 because of her strong faith and her healthy habits of eating right (they raised all their own food on the farm) and not drinking or smoking.
