The Buzz this Month!

It's February and welcome to the fourth edition of the Torrance Centennial eNewsletter!  I hope you have been attending and enjoying our exciting events since the beginning of the year.  By now, you may know Torrance brought home the Governor's Trophy from 123rd Tournament of Roses Parade and that the Torrance Symphony provided an outstanding performance.  But, did you know who was the first 2012 baby born in Torrance?  Sean and Anne Lim of Torrance are the proud parents of Anthony TG Lim.  Little Master Lim, born 9 pounds, 2 ounces and 21 inches arrived at 12:10 a.m., New Years day at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

February brings a certain flair for the new year, and we've got something really special for you, a Valentine Tea and Centennial Fashion Show.  Join us for an exciting afternoon at the Torrance Woman's Clubhouse.

We also have the South Bay Quilters Guild 2012 Quilt Show "Twist on Tradition" at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center Saturday, February 18, 2012, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, February 19, 2012, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.  For more information about this event and all of the upcoming events, click here.

Do you want to learn more about our city's founder, see him come to life, experience his presence?  Join us on February 29, 7 p.m. at the Nakano Theatre for 2012 Works in Progress ~ Celebrating the City's Centennial, a production based on Jared Sidney Torrance's unpublished autobiography of August 1916.

Have you hit a block on what to give your Valentine this year?  How about a Commemorative Personalized Brick?  What says "I Love You" more than engraving that special feeling in one of the longest lasting and strongest building materials used throughout history?  You and your loved one can be part of history by contributing to our brand new Torrance Centennial Plaza that will be constructed at El Prado Park.  The Plaza incorporates bricks that you can purchase for only $150.  Each brick sale will help fund the building of the Plaza.  Don't be left out, order your brick today!  Fill out this form or pay in person at the City's Torrance Community Services Department in the West Annex of City Hall.

Torrance's Century Club - Walter Voss

Walter Voss (102) was born on October 30, 1909 in Hamburg, Germany.  When he was 5 years old, he moved with his family to Chicago.  He married Helen in 1939; a marriage that lasted 53 years.

In 1968, his Honeywell job brought him to the South Bay and to Torrance.  In 1970, Walter and Helen bought a home in New Horizons where Walter still resides.  He has been a resident of Torrance for 44 years.

When he retired in 1977, Walter began a second career as a tour guide taking groups all over the world.  His leisure activities have included New Horizons' Board, Toastmasters, his church and he has been and is still a member of the Torrance Adult School's Writing Class "Life Story" for at least 30 years.

Walter likes Torrance because of its location and climate; he tells people "Torrance, the Center of the Universe".  He believes he has lived to be 102 because he eats right and is a positive thinker.

Looking Back

AND YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW TORRANCE!

This headline is a real one and we are going to challenge you to find the punch line.  Go to the Library's website to find the Historical Newspapers portal and search for the whole story: www.TorranceCA.Gov/LibraryArchive (Or download the new Library app that will allow you to quickly get to the files.)

And just to think - at one time dairy cows were everywhere.

Couldn't resist!  It was a slow news day in 1955...

Usually such headlines sizes were reserved for the start or endings of wars.  The story was accompanied by a strong editorial about rabies vaccination laws.
