Happy New Year and welcome to the third edition of the Torrance Centennial eNewsletter!  Torrance is beginning to really buzz now with all of the plans we have lined-up.  The day after New Year's brings the start of our Centennial Celebration for 2012!  The City of Torrance's 58th entry into the 123rd Tournament of Roses Parade is themed "Looking Back - Moving Forward".  Brilliant whole red carnations with accents of gold strawflower petals and eucalyptus leaves are used to create the floral replica of the electric Red Car trolley.  This float is certain to capture the imagination and eyes as it travels down Pasadena's historic Colorado Blvd.  Read more... 

 

 

Torrance's Century Club - Walter Crenshaw

 

Walter Crenshaw (102) was born on October 27, 1909 in Greenville, Alabama.  He married Zelma Whatley in 1940.  Walter is an original Tuskegee Airman serving in the Army from 1942 through 1944.  He and Zelma are the parents of 5 children.  After he retired in the late 1970s, they lived in Southern California for 30 of the next 40 years.  In retirement his activities have included bicycling, photography, jazz music collector, working cross word puzzles and watching ball games.  He and Zelma have had vegetable gardens for most of their lives and believe in healthy eating and physical fitness.  Read more...

 

 

Torrance's Century Club - Zora Selliken

 

Zora Selliken (101) was born May 25, 1910 in Sherwood, North Dakota.  She graduated from college and taught high school until she married Joseph in Juneau, Alaska in 1937.  In 1961 with their son, they moved to Torrance when her Air Force husband was assigned to a company in the South Bay.  Zora has been a resident of Torrance, in the same home, for 50 years.  Read more...

Riding on this year's Rose Parade float will be Torrance City Councilman Gene Barnett and his wife, Linda (former City Treasurer); Torrance City Clerk, Sue Herbers and her husband, Jerry; Torrance Rose Float Association President, Mary Hoffman, who is completing her 16th consecutive year as President of the Torrance Rose Float Association; Bob Habel, who is also completing his 16th year as a Rose Float Board member (the Association oversees all aspects of the City's float); Laurie Love, Chairperson of the Torrance Centennial Committee; Georgean Griswold, former President of the Torrance Rose Float Association; Torrance City Treasurer, Dana Cortez and three her daughters Arianna, Vanessa and Natasha Barragan; Lori Fechner and her three daughters, Emily, Camille, and Tess; Carol Gilles and Virginia VanHoutteRead more...

Once again the tradition continues as the Torrance Rose Float Association will present an entry for the event.  Be sure to tune in on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 as we enter the Centennial year in style on a replica of the trolley that brought folks to Torrance.  Seventeen individuals are continuing the boosterism that was captured by the Torrance Herald on Jan. 1, 1914.  Catch our sprit and wave back!
