St. Francis of Assisi School Newsletter

Home of the Wolves

June 6, 2012

Dear St. Francis Families,        Tom Waszak

Christian service reflects a powerful and important part of Catholic education and what it means to be Catholic. Christian service is a powerful way to preach the Gospel, not by words but by action.  This famous quote by St. Francis of Assisi, "Preach the Gospel always, if necessary, use words" compels us to live our faith. Words are important but we need to walk the talk, too. The St. Francis of Assisi School community has modeled action by demonstrating great care for others in the works that we do. I wish to thank the students, teachers, and parents for your incredible display of compassion and generosity. Time and again, you were asked to open your hearts and your wallets. Through service to others, our children learn how to respond to the call to meet the needs of the poor, the sick, and the disadvantaged.

Here is a list of the organizations supported by the St.Francis School community throughout the 2011/2012 school year.

Ronald McDonald House

Orangewood Children's Center

Second Harvest Food Bank

Mary's Kitchen

Catholic Charities

Catholic Worker

St. Vincent de Paul Society

Muscular Dystrophy Association

Battered Women Shelter

Stuffed Animals for Emergencies

American Cancer Society

Leukemia/Lymphoma Society

St. Joseph's School in Uganda

Somalia Relief Fund

World Wildlife Fund

Together we have touched the hearts and souls of those in need and by doing so we have answered God's call to serve our brothers and sisters.

First day of school:  August 27

Thanksgiving Holiday:  November 19 - 23

Christmas Holiday:  December 21 - January 4

Easter Holiday:  March 28 - April 5

Last day of school: June 14

Carline Reminder of the Week

There is no pedestrian crossing in front of the parking lot entry/exit in the cul-de-sac in the mornings. Because the flow of cars is steady and fast, it is too dangerous to cross the children in this area in the mornings and it impedes the flow of traffic.

There are absolutely no U-turns in the cul-de-sac between 7:40am and 8:10 am and there is no parking in the red zone (even if you are running late or just need to drop something off).

Please click to view the  carline rules for the 2011-2012 school year.

St. Martin de Porres Gala Night Dinner Dance

On Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 6:00 pm in the parish hall, St. Martin's will be hosting a dinner & dance. The evening will include live music from the Purple Hearts Band, and will be a formal, black tie affair (tuxedos optional). There will be no host bar. The theme of the evening captures the mission of the event: Honoring the past, preparing for the future.

Tickets (a charitable donation) are $50, and all proceeds will benefit the Building Fund. Please purchase your tickets at the parish office at St. Martin's and make checks payable to St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.

Please join us for this wonderful event! For questions, please contact Frank Alonso (949) 289-6059, Liz Oliverio (714) 349-5625, or Jessie Sioson (714) 350-0089.

Caught Being Good

For the fourth year at St. Francis, we are recognizing good student behavior through the Caught Being Good program. Modeling Christ-like behavior, helping another student, or simply being good gives students the opportunity to receive a Caught Being Good ticket. Teachers and administration may "catch" students being good, and students submit their tickets to be drawn at random and recognized with a prize and their names over the announcements.

Congratulations to the last two week's winners:

What is 947?  Well, it's the number of children who will benefit from

a new furry friend, thanks to the Stuffed Animal Drive sponsored by

Pre-K and Kindergarten to benefit S.A.F.E.

The stuffed animal drive was an enormous success thanks to the

generous donations made by our St. Francis Families. We really

appreciate your help - what a selfless and wonderful act of love!

We would like to extend a very special note of thanks to Girl Scout Troop 1033 (Hayley Ampudia, Allie Ivy, Hanna Cleek, Mikayla Carrillo, Lauren Conser, Carlee Mack, Morgan Egus, Sydney Lacy, Vanessa Orrin, Victoria Goodkind, Cristina Chiappini, and Anneliese Kridle) for their generous donation of over 100 stuffed animals!  We also send our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Rodriguez, Mrs. Avina, and Mrs. Kaczmarek for helping to count all the stuffed animals.

St. Francis Students Honored

alumsCongratulations to seven St. Francis students (past and present) who earned their Girl Scout Silver Award! In a ceremony on May 14th at the Yorba Linda Community Center, the following students received the highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. Congratulations to: Kelly Fogarty, Ally Goodkind, Caroline Clapp, Katie Macpherson, Emma Orrin, Adriannah Arriola, and Erin Smith. Thank you to leaders Yvette Smith and Carolyn MacPherson!

Catholic Woman of the Year

Congratulations, Jody Millspaugh, San Antonio Church's "Catholic Woman of the Year" Nominee!

Each year, the Catholic Charities Auxiliary hosts a "Catholic Woman of the Year" benefit luncheon. This fundraiser recognizes women volunteers in the Diocese of Orange who are nominated by a parish or diocesan organization with which they have contributed their time and talent. Jody Millspaugh, mother of Adam Millspaugh (7th grade) was nominated by Orange County Cursillo for her selfless service to the Cursillo community where she has dedicated her time to 15 Cursillo weekends, served on the fundraising committee and is also a spiritual advisor. In addition to Cursillo, Jody has also co-chaired Finance for San Antonio Fiesta for three years, has played an active role as a parent volunteer here at St. Francis, while also working full-time and raising a family. Jody, St. Francis of Assisi School is inspired by all you do, and we are lucky to have you as part of our school family. Congratulations!

An Evening to Celebrate Fr. Mike

Santa Clara de Asis Parish is hosting an evening to celebrate Fr. Mike on June 29, 2012. For more information, please contact the parish office.

Parent Satisfaction Survey

In an effort to help us improve and better serve our families, we ask for your help to complete an online "parent satisfaction" survey. The survey should take 5-10 minutes to complete depending on your comments to the optional free response questions. This is your chance to tell us in your own words how we are doing. The more we know from you, the better we can serve your child. Grade level responses will be shared with teachers and the aggregate results with the faculty and parents next fall.

Because some of the questions are grade specific, please complete one survey per child. The survey must be submitted by Friday, June 8th.

Please use the following link to access the survey for each of your children:
