St. Francis of Assisi School Newsletter

Home of the Wolves

February 15, 2012

Dear St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School families,

Tom Waszak

As a Catholic school, our identity should reflect Jesus' living presence among us. Gospel values should be integrated into all we do enveloped in a supportive and nourishing environment. During the last two weeks, our school community clearly reflected all of these qualities. It has been an emotional rollercoaster, but through it all, the experience highlights the true nature of who we are as a school community. Whether we are celebrating student achievements at Open House, collaborating to raise funds at the auction or consoling a colleague, friend, and teacher, we are strengthening and nurturing our school community. Through the highs and the lows, it is evident that we are the source of healing that Christ intended us to be. Each day I come to work with a sense of pride in the St. Francis community. Witnessing the school community come together to support the students, the school and a wounded colleague made me very proud. Among the many reasons you selected St. Francis for your child's education, one should have been clearly evident during the ups and downs of the past few weeks - we are a ministry of hope and a beacon of light for our students, faculty, staff and parents.

A Note from Mrs. Cooper
Words cannot express the gratitude I have for all you have done for my family and I over the past few months, weeks, and days. This has been an extremely difficult time for us, but you have made us feel so loved. I have always felt blessed to be a part of this community, but your love, prayers and support have truly helped us. Thank you for the prayers, cards, flowers and the food.

Book Fair Co-Chair Needed for April

Our next Book Fair at St. Francis will be April 23-28, 2012 and we are in need one additional co-chair. Chairs coordinate volunteers to set up, serve during book fair hours, and pack up. They also complete the final financial forms from the register tapes. This process is quick and efficient, and Scholastic Book Fairs and Mrs. Beidelman will train both co-chairs to provide full support.

This is an excellent way to obtain all of your volunteer hours, serve the students, and meet new friends. Please call the office (714) 695-3700 if you are interested in co-chairing this important event.

Kids and Company Safety Education Program

The Kids and Company Safety Education Program will be presented at all grade levels during the weeks of February 20. This compact program is designed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This program is taught every year as mandated by the Diocese of Orange and spirals through the grades.

The goal of the program is for children to be able to use safety strategies to help reduce the possibility of victimization from abduction and sexual exploitation.

The objectives are:

To teach age appropriate safety rules and self-protective skills

To enhance children's sense of self-worth

Provide opportunities to practice safety skills and habits

Incorporate safety rules and vocabulary into daily practice

Key messages for children are:

Make safe decisions and avoid dangerous situations.

Know what to do in a situation that makes you feel scared, uncomfortable or confused.

Know who to seek out for help.

Trust your feelings.

Know what to do when you have these feelings

The upper grades also introduce Internet safety activities and videos. Please discuss the Kids and Company Safety Program with your children. They will love to share what they have discussed in the classroom.

Sock Drive
Girl Scout Junior Troop 1413 will be holding a Sock Drive, February 21 through February 24, 2012. All brand new socks donated will be given to the Isaiah House to help benefit those in the greatest need. Boxes will be placed in each classroom for the donations. This is a great way to start off the Lenten Season. As an extra benefit the class that donates the most socks will get a free pizza lunch!
Computer Lab Open for ALEKS-
Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

In an effort to support our new, online supplemental math computer program ALEKS in grades 3-8, we will be opening the computer lab on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-3:30 p.m. Students will have supervision, and this will be on a fist come, first serve basis for the first few weeks. If we find demand exceeds seats available, we will establish a sign up list in advance.

If a student attends Day Care, he or she must sign in to Day Care and then let the supervisors know he/she will be working on ALEKS in the computer lab. Students not attending day care should be picked up from the computer lab at 3:30. Day Care students will be walked back to class.

Grade Six Valentine's Day of Service

Yesterday the two sixth grade classes celebrated Valentine's Day in a special way. As a service project the sixth grade classes decided that they would become "blanketeers" for the Linus Project, which
makes blankets for children in hospitals. In January with the help of amazing 6th grade parents, the 6th grade classes put on a pizza lunch fundraiser. It was a smashing success. Enough money was made to not only make 50 blankets, but also to send a donation to Fr. Josephat's school in Uganda. So, to really bring home the message of gifts from the heart, the sixth grade classes made their blankets on Valentine's Day. The 50 blankets made yesterday will be sent directly to the Linus Project for distribution.
Battle of the Books 2012

The Battle of the Books was held on Saturday, February 4th at Yorba Linda High School. After 5 hours and 6 rounds, the 6th grade St. Francis team was the winner! Congratulations to Hanna C., James M., Jonathan L. and Lauren C. This was the 4th annual event and 3rd time St. Francis placed in the top 2 and 2nd time St. Francis won competing against over 100 teams.

Caught Being Good

For the fourth year at St. Francis, we are recognizing good student behavior through the Caught Being Good program. Modeling Christ-like behavior, helping another student, or simply being good gives students the opportunity to receive a Caught Being Good ticket. Teachers and administration may "catch" students being good, and students submit their tickets to be drawn at random and recognized with a prize and their names over the announcements.

Congratulations to last week's winners:
