Are you using the President's Challenge for Fitness Testing? |
President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition
The launch of this new program signals a new era in youth fitness assessment-one that focuses on health over performance. The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) began recognizing participation in the Youth Fitness Test in 1966. This step represents the first major changes to the test in 25 years. The new program features three key components: 1. Assessment, 2. Professional Development, and 3. Recognition and awards. The Youth Fitness Test, will be phased out during the 2012-13 school year to encourage use of FITNESSGRAM®, which provides a barometer on students' overall health and, when used in conjunction with the other elements of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, empowers kids and families to become physically active for a lifetime.
PYFP is managed through these partnering organizations: President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Amateur Athletic Union American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Cooper Institute® Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Educators are invited to participate for a Webinar on September 25th from 1-2 pm EDT to learn more about the new program. Space is limited. Reserve your Webinar seat now. MORE

Incorporating fitness tools into physical education class |
Tara Kolbe,
Physical Education Teacher,
Incorporating vigorous exercise into a workout routine is not only hard for an adult to attempt, but try talking to a second grader about it. Instead of talking about it, why not show them how to do it? Allow the class to read, touch, and discuss. Last year our elementary school was awarded strapless heart rate monitors through a mini-grant provided by NJAHPERD and pedometers through an in-district board of education grant. Not only were the students enthusiastic about trying "the mini heart computer," but they looked forward to wearing both tools. Additionally, students reported what they learned to their families. September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month |
COAM
In the past four decades, obesity rates in the United States have soared among all age groups. This rise in obesity rates has affected our youth in alarming fashion. Childhood obesity has increased more than fourfold among those ages 6-11. More than 23 million children and teenagers in the United States ages 2-19 are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic. And this epidemic puts nearly one third of America's children at early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke - conditions usually associated with adulthood. Even greater disparities exist among young Hispanics and children of color. MORE |
The more they burn the better they learn | Voices for a Healthy Southcoast
It's back to school time again and educators, parents and kids are focused on making this year as successful as possible. Did you know that teens who receive mostly As are almost twice as likely to get the CDC recommended daily 60 minutes of physical activity than teens who receive mostly Ds and Fs? Kids who perform better in school are more likely to be physically active on a regular basis. Adding physical activity to the school day can not only keep kids healthy, but also increase attention, behavior and positive attitudes leading to improved academic performance. MORE |

Study: Short bouts of exercise can cut heart risks in kids | The Canadian Press via CTV News
Engaging in less than 10 minutes of vigorous exercise as part of daily physical activity appears to provide increased heart-protective health benefits in children and teens, a Canadian study suggests. Bouts of high-intensity physical activity - such as running, swimming or playing soccer - are superior to longer periods of light and moderate exercise in reducing the risk factors that set kids on a path towards cardiovascular disease. The findings were published online by the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. MORE |

Pressuring children to eat increases risk of obesity | Medical News Today
New research in the September issue of Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics suggests that children's risk of obesity may become reduced if parents join an education program that shows them how to take the pressure off their kids to eat. In order to take the pressure off of children to eat certain foods, parents should be educated in an approach based on "division of responsibility" for eating, according to a team led by Dr. W. Stewart Agras of Stanford University. MORE |

Back-to-School Reminder to Parents, Teens & Coaches | NJ Teen Safe Driving Coalition
As school begins, the New Jersey Teen Safe Driving Coalition is reminding parents and teens about the need to follow the state's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, which prohibits teens holding a probationary license from carrying more than one passenger and from driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Teens crash at three times the rate of more experienced drivers, and that crash risk increases dramatically when teen drivers carry passengers and drive at night. Carrying a teen passenger is one of the greatest distractions for a teen driver. Just one teen passenger increases crash risk by as much as 48 percent. The more teen passengers in a teen-driven vehicle, the greater the distraction and crash risk. MORE |
