A MESSAGE FROM YOUR EDITOR...
|
TTFN... |
As we move into summer...
This will be our final edition for this 2011/12 school year! It has been a wonderful labor of love to provide you with the FYI twice a month...I hope you have found it useful!
As we head into summer, what are your plans so that it will not be "lazy or hazy?" It is always good to take a "recovery run" to gear up for the "long run," so I encourage you to take some time to relax. However, the summer is the perfect time to gear up for what will be a fit, healthy and fantastic 2012/13 school year. Remember, if you need some fresh ideas, you can always access the FYI Archive from the NJAPHERD website!
Be on the lookout for a special late summer edition of FYI sometime in August and we will pick up with our "regularly scheduled" emailings again in September!!
I wish you and your families a super summer! Suzette |

Inclusion of Health Education and Physical Education in Successful RTT-D Applications
Last week the US Department of Education announced Race to The Top - District (RTT-D) - a $400 million grant program, similar to Race to the Top.
The Department of Education (Department) will waive rulemaking for this new program, pursuant to its authority in the General Education Provisions Act, but is allowing for public input until Friday June 8th, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. It is our hope that the Department will include health education and physical education as criteria for winning RTT-D applications.
Please take a moment BEFORE June 8th and either post a comment, or "vote up" on a comment encouraging the health education and physical education be included in RTT-D. Later this summer when the final requirements are published in the federal register, we'll know if the administration heard us and our campaign for inclusion was successful. Draft comments and the link are below. Please feel free to modify the comments to include personal references/experiences.
Race to the Top District Competition Draft
Inclusion of Health Education and Physical Education in Successful RTT-D Applications
While the childhood obesity epidemic grows, schools today do not provide adequate health education or physical education, as recommended by leading healthcare professionals, health-related national organizations and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In many school districts throughout the country, subjects that are not considered "core" have been marginalized or eliminated due to a lack of Congressionally directed funding or administrative priority - the Administration's blueprint for ESEA reauthorization does not include health education or physical education.
To rectify this, health education and physical education should be included in this competition through professional development, innovative curriculum, engagement of parents and community, and the ability/desire of a district to create a culture of health and wellness in its schools.
Additionally, recent studies show that health and fitness are linked to improved academic performance, cognitive ability, and behavior as well as reduced truancy. Data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2008-2009) shows that students who engage in health-risk behaviors (such as inactivity, increased screen time, unhealthy eating and drinking habits) receive lower grades. Including health education and physical education in this competition will undoubtedly assist in making progress towards closing achievement gaps.

NJ Health & Physical Education model curriculum |
The NJ Department of Education has recently posted the newly developed "model" curriculum K-8 and is encouraging feedback from Health and Physical Education professionals. Writing teams of health educators, physical educators, and administrators from various grade levels have worked very hard to produce something that will be beneficial to all of us. We also ask that you share the model curriculum website with your entire school community and visit the site often for updates. CLICK HERE |

How working the muscles may boost brainpower |
The New York Times
Upending the cliché of muscleheads, scientists at the Laboratory of Neuroscience at the National Institute on Aging recently set out to examine whether changes in muscles prompted by exercise might subsequently affect and improve the brain's ability to think.
Lab animals and people generally perform better on tests of cognition after several weeks of exercise training, and studies have shown that over time, running and other types of endurance exercise increase the number of neurons in portions of the brain devoted to memory and learning. But the mechanisms that underlie this process remain fairly mysterious. Do they start within the brain itself? Or do messages arrive from elsewhere in the body to jump-start the process? MORE

Strict school physical education laws improve children's health |
As childhood obesity and diabetes rates are skyrocketing in the U.S., many schools are eliminating physical education classes. A national study in the American Journal of Public Health reports that specific and required state legislation with regard to PE times could be a crucial tool to ensure that children meet the daily recommendations of physical activity. Study: Physical education is good for kids' grades |
U.S. News and World Report Share
Boosting students' levels of physical education improves their grades, a new, small study says. Swedish researchers followed more than 200 schoolchildren, starting from first through third grade, for nine years. Some children were assigned to an intervention group that received physical education five days a week, plus extra training in motor-physical skills such as balance and coordination. The other children were assigned to a control group that received usual levels of physical education. MORE |
Diabetes on the rise among teenagers |
Nearly one in four American adolescents may be on the verge of developing Type 2 diabetes or could already be diabetic, representing a sharp increase in the disease's prevalence among children ages 12 to 19 since a decade ago, when it was estimated that fewer than 1 in 10 were at risk for or had diabetes, according to a new study. This worsening of the problem is worrying in light of recently published findings that the disease progresses more rapidly in children than in adults and is harder to treat, experts said. MORE |
Children's activity level is influenced by circle of friends |
CNN Health
Children with physically active friends were six times more likely to be active during an after-school program, U.S. researchers reported in the journal Pediatrics. They interviewed 81 children ages 5 to 12 and found that the activity levels of friends in a social group can lead children to be more active or more sedentary. MORE |
