Getting healthy and fit: there's an app for that |
The Healthy App Challenge
In our technology-laden world of smart phones and laptops, there's an application for nearly everything; which is why Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, MD held the Healthy App Challenge. The contest sought out mobile apps that support the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in their effort to promote healthy choices through technology. The following four winners were selected:
- Lose It! - This app allows users to set daily calorie budgets and then record their physical activity and food intake. Users can share their logs on Facebook to keep themselves accountable and show off their progress.
- GoodGuide - A bar code scanner that can be used while shopping, this app helps users get information about food, personal care, and household products to help them make healthy choices.
- Fooducate - Another bar code scanner, this app makes it easier to make healthy choices while grocery shopping by providing a quick view of nutritional values as well as additional information on nutrients and additives. Other features include the ability to offer healthier alternatives and compare items side-by-side.
- Healthy Habit - This app goes beyond just physical activity and nutrition, addressing other health-influencing habits such as smoking, wearing sunscreen, and reducing stress. Users can set goals, and the app will help track their success.
In addition to the winning applications, several others addressing physical activity were also recommended , Fit Friendzy and MapMyFitness, and for children, Max's Plate and Short Sequence: Kids' Yoga Journey. As part of the criteria for the challenge, all of these applications are available for free download. You can also read the Surgeon's General's press release for more information.

Fitness Assessment |
It's that time of the year!
Are you really still using the President's Challenge for fitness testing? Fitnessgram assessment includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests that assess aerobic capacity; muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility; and body composition and scores from these assessments are compared to Healthy Fitness ZoneŽ standards to determine students' overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement. The Healthy Fitness Zone standards are not based on class averages or any other peer comparisons. Reports are available to send home to students and parents which is a great way to advocate for quality PE.
No funding available in your district budget? No problem!
Fitnessgram grants are available for the 9.0 web based version and free training through funding by the NJ Council on Physical Fitness & Sports to qualifying schools. Fitnessgram Application FG System requirements
Fitness Testing Best Practices Physical educators use fitness assessment as part of the ongoing process of helping students understand, enjoy, improve and/or maintain their physical fitness and well-being.
Physical educators make every effort to create testing situations that are private, nonthreatening, educational and encouraging.
Physical educators encourage students to avoid comparisons with others and, instead, use the results as a catalyst for personal improvement. Appropriate Uses of Fitness Testing
Inappropriate Practices Testing is public; students observe others completing the test while they wait for their turn to take it.
Fitness scores are used for grading.
Results are interpreted based on comparison to norms rather than how they apply to the students' future health and well-being. Students are allowed to compare their test scores.
Individual scores are posted publicly, where anyone can view and compare them. Source: NASPE Appropriate Instructional Practice Guidelines |

Mandatory physical education linked to student fitness
|
Does physical education really make a difference in student health? Apparently so. Students are more likely to be physically fit when the school requires mandatory physical education, reports a new study in this month's issue of the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. The study, headed by Emma V. Sanchez-Vaznaugh, examined district-level compliance in California with physical education policies for fifth-grade students. California law requires physical education for students in grades 1-6, with a total of 200 minutes of physical activity every 10 days, reports Health Behavior News Service. MORE |
Study: Recess helps African American, Latino students perform in class |
While the benefits of physical activity among children has given rise to little, if any, debate, the benefits of midday playtime has. On one end of the spectrum some say that recess poses safety hazards and cuts into much needed instructional time; on the other end of the spectrum, proponents say recess may actually help children perform better in the classroom. A new study from the latter camp shows that time away from the classroom might be especially beneficial for Black and Latino students. MORE |
CDC study: Obesity in US projected to grow, though pace slows
|
Share Obesity in the United States is projected to continue its rise over the next 18 years, extending to 42 percent of Americans by 2030, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That expected growth in the proportion of obese Americans - up from 34 percent - contained good news and bad: Obesity's growth has slowed from the record-setting pace that has marked most of the last three decades; at the same time, the numbers of the severely obese - those carrying 80 or more pounds more than the healthy, normal weight for their height - is expected to grow by 130 percent. Should young athletes be screened for heart risk? |
Should high school athletes be screened for heart trouble before taking to the practice field? Once thought to be exceedingly rare, sudden cardiac death is far more prevalent among young athletes than previously believed, recent research has shown. In a policy statement published in the journal Pediatrics the American Academy of Pediatrics estimated that 2,000 people under the age of 25 die from sudden cardiac arrest in the United States every year. President's Fitness Council launches video-game health challenge |
Video games and "screen time" are often named as culprits for the childhood-obesity epidemic in the United States, but a new federal initiative aims to promote the health benefits that certain video games can provide. Recently, alongside U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition and the Entertainment Software Association announced the launch of the Active Play Presidential Lifestyle Award Challenge, which encourages all Americans to track the physical activity they log while playing video games. NEW Youth and Road Safety Action Tool Kit |
Youth for Road Safety
Today, the youth around the world will have access to YOURS - Youth for Road Safety's first publication that will introduce them to road safety, inspire them, and equip them with the knowledge they need to take action. The Youth and Road Safety Action Kit is an attractive youth friendly publication giving much needed attention to the global road safety threat facing young people.
Each year 400,000 young people aged between 15-29 die on the world's roads and millions more are injured. This translates into more than 1000 young lives lost unnecessarily every day on the roads, making road crashes the number one killer of young people ahead of HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. The numbers are not merely statistics. Behind each number is a person, a family, a friend, and a story of how life can change in an instant. MORE
