Vineland trying to improve children's health as 44 percent are overweight or obese
vineland students
Press of Atlantic City

Nearly 44 percent of children ages 3 to 19 in the city are overweight or obese, according to a 2010 report by the Rutgers Center for State Health Policy.

A team of educators and health officials are working with schools, families and downtown businesses to help reverse the trend as part of a national effort to reduce childhood obesity.

Vineland is one of five cities in the state participating in the New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids study to determine what contributes to children being overweight, what can be done to improve exercise and eating habits, and whether efforts to provide more playgrounds and healthier food will have any effect. Concussion impact among young athletes - A gender difference?

NextGen Journal Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New York University soccer player Molly Henning collided head first with an opposing player during a game last season and never reported her resulting headache to a coach or trainer. For two weeks she suffered through bad migraines without reporting any of her symptoms. "When you're in the moment in a game, you don't want to leave the field so you just try and muscle through it," Henning said. Henning said she didn't report her concussion because she didn't want to be withdrawn from the game and risk sitting on the sidelines for weeks recovering. But in the end, this nonaction put her soccer career at a much greater risk. MORE

RESEARCH RESULTS

Elite athletes are much smarter than the rest of us
Stone Hearth News Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Elite soccer players have superior executive functions relative to nonplayers, and there is a significant correlation between their cognitive function and number of goals and assists, according to a new study published April 4 in the open access journal PLoS ONE. The researchers, led by Predrag Petrovic of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, measured general executive functions, including creativity and cognitive flexibility, in male and female soccer players and nonplayers. They found that the soccer players performed better than the nonplayers, and furthermore, the higher level players performed better than the lower division athletes. These results emphasize the importance of cognitive functions, in addition to physical skill, for achieving the highest level of athletic performance. MORE
Student fitness improves with anti-obesity program

Obesity rates continue to climb in California schools, but exercise and nutrition programs may be having a positive effect on student health, a new study suggests. Study: Many small kids lack outdoor time with parents
Reuters Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Roughly half of preschoolers don't spend time playing outside with a parent each day, despite the fact that outdoor play has been tied to a host of benefits for young children, including avoiding childhood obesity, a recent U.S. survey found. In interviews with parents of close to 9,000 children, fewer than half of mothers and only a quarter of fathers reported taking their child for a walk or playing with them in the yard or park at least once a day. MORE

GOOD IDEAS & GOOD DEEDS

Healthy eating coupons
Paddy Hill Elementary School, Rochester, New York
A Rochester, NY elementary school celebrated March with a fun idea in the cafeteria. After Healthy Highway concepts were introduced in PE class, students were told of a healthy choice program that would be started in their cafeteria.  "Coupons" were given out for kids who ate healthy fruits and vegetables each day.  They could buy them at school or bring them from home, and had to actually eat them! The coupon then was placed in a drawing box.  Every Friday a name from each grade level was drawn to win a prize of a ball or jump rope to promote physical activity. Next month the PE and Food Service Departments will check back in to see if the children are continuing to make healthy choices.

Miles to Go: Monitoring Progress in Teen Driver Safety
Miles to Go
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and State FarmŽ

Although the number of teen drivers and teen passengers that died in crashes significantly declined from 2005 to 2010, crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens. Too many teens are seriously injured and head injuries are of particular concern. New trends, stats, and facts are released today in Miles to Go: Monitoring Progress in Teen Driver Safety by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and State FarmŽ.

Substantial variation in state-specific crash fatality rates suggest where and how we can continue to make progress in reducing teen crash death rates.

Hear from a remarkable teen and her parents on how she's recovering from a severe brain injury caused by a prom night crash.

Help further reduce the number and impact of crashes involving teens behind the wheel.

Federal Legislation

A Better Transportation Bill

As we wrote in February, the federal transportation bill proposed in the House of Representatives is terrible; the bill would undermine economic growth and clean air by placing transit funds at risk, among other issues. Imagine the impact on New Jersey with 11% of our population commuting to work by train, and our strongest real estate markets located around transit hubs. Our partners at T4America have a top 10 list explaining the growing opposition to that bill.

The good news is that the Senate recently passed its transportation bill, MAP-21, by a strong bipartisan vote of 74-22. With the March 31 expiration of the latest stop-gap extension rapidly approaching, Sens. Lautenberg and Menendez, Rep. Sires, and USDOT Secretary Ray LaHood held a press conference in Hoboken calling on the House to pass the Senate's bill. MORE

Food Allergy Policy Guide
National School Boards Association
The National School Boards Association (NSBA) is pleased to announce the release of "Safe at School and Ready to Learn: a Comprehensive Policy Guide for Protecting Students with Life-Threatening Food Allergies."

Developed with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this new guide is designed to help school leaders and schools establish comprehensive policies and practices that support the safety, well-being, and academic success of students with life-threatening food allergies. The guide focuses on the need for schools to partner with families, and healthcare providers in identifying and supporting individual student needs and preparing management plans. Further, it provides recommendations on following medication protocols; establishing a coordinated system to
prevent and respond to food allergy-related emergencies across the school environment; communicating with and educating parents, students, and school personnel; and monitoring and evaluating policies and practices.

The publication also includes a checklist for schools to assess the extent to which the guide's components are included in food allergy policies and practices being developed and implemented; sample state and local education policies; a glossary of commonly used terms; and a list of resources related to food allergies.

The guide is available for download through NSBA's food allergy webpage. For further information on this publication, please email.
