NJAHPERD Rocks Washington D.C. Legislators at NASPE SPEAK OUT DAY! |
On Thursday, March 29th, Jim McCall (Advocacy Chairperson), Jackie Malaska (Executive Director), JoAnn Doherty (Retired Member Chairperson, and Rich Mann (Volunteer Advocate) represented NJAHPERD in a national advocacy movement sponsored by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) to promote quality Health and Physical Education in our nations' schools. These 4 advocates targeted specific legislators and congressional aides who represent New Jersey in the U.S. Congress.
Discussions in the Washington D.C. offices of Senator Robert Menendez, Congressman Steven Roth, and Congressman Robert Andrews focused on ensuring (1) that the Elementary and Secondary Education (No Child Left Behind) reauthorization recognizes the importance of Health and Physical Education in the preK-12 environment as critical to providing a well-rounded whole child education, the learning of healthy active lifestyle skills, and a content area that positively impacts student academic achievement; (2) continued PEP Grant Funding opportunities now and in the future to support development and sustainability of high quality health and physical education programs; and (3) recognition of Health and Physical Education as "core" academic subjects.
The response from the legislators was overwhelmingly positive with the promise of continued support regarding fiscal and policy school health-related issues. The legislators also provided tips on how NJAHPERD can increase influence on national and state policy. They suggested that NJAHPERD members contact their district legislators to promote quality Health and Physical Education. Personal letters, emails, and especially face to face meetings can all be effective modes of communication and advocacy. So join the movement and "SPEAK OUT" to your legislators! You can contact your Congressmen easily via email HERE

Gym class is undergoing an extreme makeover in Illinois' Rockford School District. The rules and mechanics of team sports will still be taught. But gone are the days of rolling out red rubber dodge balls for a jock vs. geek game in which most kids sit out while star athletes shine, said Jefferson High School physical education teacher Kami Lund. A Tough Act to Follow: How a "bad" PE teacher can sometimes be the hardest one to replace |
PELinks4U
Differentiation, skill development, developmentally appropriate content and instructional methods, best practices, cooperative activities...These concepts are nothing new to informed and progressive teachers. Chances are, as an apparent reader of professional literature, you are such a teacher. Your concern for and knowledge of educational best practices are surely a benefit to your students and should surely be an asset to you in professional endeavors such as searching for a new job, building and continually improving your PE program, and contributing to the profession in other ways. But could it be that these positive attributes might actually make your teaching life more difficult?
A new teacher can experience resistance and face many different challenges in regard to promoting and implementing current curriculum practices. Schools and other teachers have always 'done it a certain way'' and don't easily accept change. Dustin Yakoubian describes challenges and solutions. MORE |

Maybe it's time to ask the teachers? |
American teachers deal with a lot: low pay, growing class sizes and escalating teacher-bashing from politicians and pundits. Federal testing and accountability mandates under No Child Left Behind and, more recently, Race to the Top, have added layers of bureaucracy while eliminating much of the creativity and authentic learning that makes teaching enjoyable. Tack on the recession's massive teacher layoffs and other school cuts, plus the challenges of trying to compensate for increasing child poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity, and you get a trifecta of disincentives to become or remain a teacher. Better coaches teach character, not ego, to kids |

Playing in an atmosphere that focuses on player self-improvement versus player competition creates a sense of teamwork and develops initiative, social skills, and a sense of identity, report the authors of the study from Michigan State University's Institute for the Study of Youth Sports.
The study, led by Daniel Gould and Larry Lauer, is published in the journalPsychology of Sport and Exercise. "The research adds to the growing body of knowledge that shows coaching actions and the team climates they create have important influences on the personal development of youth," Gould says. MORE

Student fitness improves with anti-obesity program |
Obesity rates continue to climb in California schools, but exercise and nutrition programs may be having a positive effect on student health, a new study suggests. Kids entered fifth grade more obese every year, but they did not gain more weight and their overall fitness improved as they moved to higher grades. "We accomplished a significant first step and that is to slow obesity," said Dr. William Bommer, a cardiologist at the University of California, Davis, who worked on the study. "But we importantly were not able to reverse it." MORE |
Cool hands may be the key to increasing exercise capacity |

In the study, obese women who exercised while using the AvaCore Rapid Thermal Exchange improved their exercise tolerance and cardiovascular fitness. MORE |

Coach's idea to help special needs children goes national |

New Jersey students take steps to cure diabetes |

Students' sneakers at Three Bridges School in New Jersey did double duty recently when the school held a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in conjunction with a month-long pedometer class challenge. The school kicked off their JDRF fundraiser at a school-wide assembly, at which time the students learned about type one and type two diabetes and the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Following the assembly, students in grades 1-3 used pedometers throughout their school day for one week and kept track of how many steps they walked. MORE |

Cities a Test Kitchen for Fighting Childhood Obesity |

The efforts are bearing fruit in Vineland, where recipes are being created with local produce for school menus. In New Brunswick, high school students play with kids after the school bell rings. In Camden, schools are piloting breakfast in classrooms. MORE |

Healthy Schools Process and BMI Data Help Schools Move Forward |
Spotlight on Plainfield School District
Educators know that there is an obesity epidemic in this country. However, many of them do not know what their role should be or what they can do about it. Collecting BMI data on students seemed like a good place to start for physical education teachers Jim Malkmus (Cook) and Shawn Colletta (Jefferson), who began this practice two years ago but never knew what to do with the data, other than share it with their principal. With overweight/obese rates soaring at more than 40 percent in these schools, it was clear that further action was needed.
After attending the district's first Alliance for a Healthier Generation's Healthy Schools Program workshop, Malkmus and Colletta started to see how they could move forward. They now feel that they have the data and the process to create healthier schools. After completing their Healthy Schools Program Inventory one thing that really stuck out for them is that they currently offer only 40 minutes of physical education per week- significantly less than what is recommended by the Alliance's national panel of experts. Now that they have local and accurate data and the Healthy Schools Program Framework, these school teachers feel empowered to be better advocates for change.
Malkmus shared, "Students need to have consistent guidance and structure from all stakeholders in the school community in order to grow physically, emotionally and socially and to be able to make decisions that can positively affect their lives. I believe that when we get all of the stakeholders involved in the health of our children we will begin to see a marked difference in the physical wellbeing and academic growth of every child. I believe that the Healthy Schools Program can help us head in the right direction as a school district."

Small groups of people - with small grants from state and local agencies - are working hard to convince students in area schools to trade their french fries for fruit and video games for a jump rope.

Federal Legislation |
A Better Transportation Bill
As we wrote in February, the federal transportation bill proposed in the House of Representatives is terrible; the bill would undermine economic growth and clean air by placing transit funds at risk, among other issues. Imagine the impact on New Jersey with 11% of our population commuting to work by train, and our strongest real estate markets located around transit hubs. Our partners at T4America have a top 10 list explaining the growing opposition to that bill.
The good news is that the Senate recently passed its transportation bill, MAP-21, by a strong bipartisan vote of 74-22. With the March 31 expiration of the latest stop-gap extension rapidly approaching, Sens. Lautenberg and Menendez, Rep. Sires, and USDOT Secretary Ray LaHood held a press conference in Hoboken calling on the House to pass the Senate's bill. MORE

Food Allergy Policy Guide |
National School Boards Association
The National School Boards Association (NSBA) is pleased to announce the release of "Safe at School and Ready to Learn: a Comprehensive Policy Guide for Protecting Students with Life-Threatening Food Allergies."
Developed with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this new guide is designed to help school leaders and schools establish comprehensive policies and practices that support the safety, well-being, and academic success of students with life-threatening food allergies. The guide focuses on the need for schools to partner with families, and healthcare providers in identifying and supporting individual student needs and preparing management plans. Further, it provides recommendations on following medication protocols; establishing a coordinated system to prevent and respond to food allergy-related emergencies across the school environment; communicating with and educating parents, students, and school personnel; and monitoring and evaluating policies and practices.
The publication also includes a checklist for schools to assess the extent to which the guide's components are included in food allergy policies and practices being developed and implemented; sample state and local education policies; a glossary of commonly used terms; and a list of resources related to food allergies.
The guide is available for download through NSBA's food allergy webpage. For further information on this publication, please email.
