2012 Convention is a Huge Success!!

This year's convention, held at the Ocean Resort and Spa in Long Branch, was the place to be for excellence in professional development. Your attendance helped make it a huge success. New programs, products, and resources were highlighted that addressed current research and content. Over 1300 participants attended the 125 sessions and meetings focused on fitness programs, physical education activities, assessment, health education issues, dance experiences, and advocacy. Jean Blaydes, co-founder of Action Based Learning, was the keynote speaker who convinced the audience that movement is essential to learning. She presented research that supports how a quality Physical Education program contributes to brain development and effective learning in all academic subjects. Jean also presented two additional sessions that provided activities for learning through movement. Forty exhibitors showcased their new products and provided hands on sessions to demonstrate product use in a variety of physical education and health education curricula. The session rooms were filled, sometimes overflowing, with educators who were eager to learn new ideas they can bring back to their programs. Many convention participants remarked that the annual convention is their opportunity to be recharged for the final months of school and they could use the new information in planning for the 2012-2013 school year.

Along with the professional educators, over 330 future professionals attended from New Jersey's colleges and universities. For many of these future professionals, this was their first convention and many remarked that they would definitely return next year. They enjoyed learning new activities and making connections with their peers. Another convention highlight was the Sunday pre-convention programs that focused on learning how to implement the Fitnessgram program and how to integrate Project Adventure activities into the Physical Education curriculum. The convention concluded with the ever-popular Grand Finale where over $5000 worth of products and services donated by the exhibitors and speakers were distributed by lottery drawing to those in attendance. The speakers, who submitted handouts to accompany their sessions, will have their information available on the NJAHPERD website by April 15.

The 2013 convention dates are February 24-26, 2013. The convention will be at the same location because the facility works well for the programs and the hotel staff is most helpful with all our needs. A short lunch time will be added and we will continue the President's walk, an Awards banquet on Sunday, pre-convention in-depth sessions, and programs that will add to excellence in professional development.

Finally, a special thank you to the NJAHPERD Executive Board and the many NJAHPERD member-volunteers who helped with registration, hospitality, the NJAHPERD and Image Sports booths, audio visual needs, and/or presided at many of the sessions. Your contributions are greatly appreciated and you helped make this a highly successful convention.

2012 NASPE Award Joy of Effort Award Winner
Congratulations, Lilyan B. Wright, New Hampshire (formerly of NJ) Lylian Wright

NJAHPERD is excited to announce that our own Lilyan Wright is this year's recipient of the 2012 NASPE Joy of Effort Award. Lilyan was nominated by both NJAHPERD, and New Hampshire AHPERD, and was the "slam dunk" choice by the national awards committee!

During her career that has spanned over 70 years, Lilyan has made enormous contributions to our profession. She was a teacher and coach at the High School level prior to her 29 years at Trenton State College as a professor, coach, department chair, and athletic director. Just this year, at the age of 91, she retired from officiating both Field Hockey and Lacrosse. It is estimated that she has been on an athletic field or court for over 5,000 games as a coach or official (and that number is probably low). She still is teaching fitness classes to the elderly in New Hampshire, and continues to attend both New Jersey's and New Hampshire's state conferences. Both states have awards named in her honor; ours being the student of the year award and New Hampshire has the Lilyan B. Wright service award.

She will be recognized at the NASPE Awards Banquet in Boston during the AAHPERD National Convention. We are asking everyone in our state to attend the banquet in support of our 92 year young New Jersey treasure! Congratulations Lilyan...you are the definition of Joy of Effort, and this award is long overdue! See you all at the banquet in Boston...let's "pack the house for Lil"!

Please join us in celebrating Lilyan's accomplishments at the Hall of Fame Banquet, AAHPERD Convention, Friday, March 16 at 7 pm at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston.  Please purchase your banquet tickets prior to the convention to enjoy savings. We hope you will join us for this annual celebration of the profession! Tell your friends and colleagues!

The National Association for Sport and Physical Education even offers physical activity recommendations for toddlers and preschoolers. Toddlers should get at least 30 minutes of structured physical activity and at least 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity each day. Preschoolers need a little more exercise - at least 60 minutes of structured physical activity and at least 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity each day. MORE
Couch Potatoes, Rejoice! Learning Can Be Passive
TIME Ideas
You've heard it before, and it's true: we learn by doing. But we also learn by watching. Whether it's a salsa teacher running through a dance sequence, a tennis coach demonstrating proper serving technique or a science professor conducting a dissection in front of the class, observing an expert at work is an opportunity to hone our own skills. This is especially true in the case of motor movements, and research in neuroscience is beginning to show why: when we watch someone else's motions, the parts of the brain that direct our own physical movements are activated. Observation accelerates the learning process because our brains are able to map others' actions onto our own mental representations, making them more detailed and more accurate. Using brain scans, scientists are figuring out how this process works - and how we can make the most of what we see. MORE

Fun ideas for National Nutrition Month
March is national nutrition month!
March is a great time to raise the awareness of how fun it can be to make healthy choices. Here are some ideas:
  1. Fun Food Fact Friday: each Friday in the month have a class research a fun food fact and read it on the morning announcement. A great connection would be to have it relate to a food being served in the cafeteria that day!
ex:  The longest carrot ever grown was 193 1/2"!
  2. Make an "E-Z Pass" ticket or certificate and hand out to those students who make healthy choices. They can go to the front of the lunch line!
  3. Give your cafeteria a name. Have a contest where the students can make suggestions or have a vote.
  4. Have students draw pictures of their favorite food exercising, i.e., a carrot skateboarding!

Does being physically fit counteract some of the undesirable health consequences of being overweight? That question, of pressing interest to those of us who exercise while carrying a few extra pounds, prompted an important new study that focused on aerobic fitness and weight swings. The study, which was published in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology, examined health information about more than 3,100 adults who'd visited the Cooper Clinic in Dallas for medical checkups. During the exams, physicians gathered information about each person's cardiovascular health, including blood pressure, cholesterol profile, abdominal girth and body fat percentage. They also measured the patients' aerobic fitness using treadmill tests. MORE

Classroom Close-UP NJ & Mt. Pleasant School, Millville, NJ
Tune in on March 25 at 12:30pm & 7:30pm!
In the spring of 2011 I saw an advertisement requesting proposals for exemplary programs happening in our public schools in New Jersey. When I read the advertisement from Classroom Close-Up NJ I thought about so many different initiatives and programs happening in my school and in my district. When I gave it more thought I began to think of why my program could not be one such program highlighted. I received encouragement from colleagues that told me to be a cheerleader for my own program and get the attention it deserves. Under more thought and advise I realize. that as educators, we need to be our own supporters if we truly believe in what we do.

The process I followed to apply for a spot on Classroom Close-Up NJ was to email them and describe the program that I wanted to be highlighted. That experience alone gives much credibility to all the hard work that you as an educator and your students put in. It was not until early fall of 2011 that I received a response to my request. I had actually forgotten that I submitted a proposal. In responding to the invitation to be taped I gained access to a representative of the network to begin to work out the logistics.

The process has been very positive and the support I received was tremendous. Classroom Close-Up NJ contacted my principal and superintendent for approval to begin setting a date. Classroom Close-Up NJ provides all video permission slips, advertisement papers, press releases and will bring all equipment for interviewing. My students are excited about the upcoming taping and the reality of being on TV.

Our taping is scheduled for November 30 and our airing of the segment will be February 19 and March 25 at 12:30 pm and 7:30 pm.

Please join us and watch! Celebrate our profession and the great things we do every day for our students!

The Million Hearts Initiative
The Department of Health and Human Services

The Million Hearts™ is a national initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. by 2017. Launched by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in September 2011, it aligns existing efforts, as well as creates new programs, to improve health across communities and help Americans live longer, more productive lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), co-leaders of Million Hearts™ within HHS, are working alongside other federal agencies and private-sector organizations to make a long-lasting impact against cardiovascular disease.

Why this focus? Heart disease and stroke are the first and fourth leading causes of death in the United States, making cardiovascular disease responsible for 1 of every 3 deaths in the country. Americans suffer more than 2 million heart attacks and strokes each year, and every day, 2,200 people die from cardiovascular disease. Further, heart disease and stroke are among the leading causes of disability in our country, with more than 3 million people reporting serious illness and decreased quality of life.

What can you do? The Million Hearts™  is asking Americans to sign the Million Hearts pledge at www.millionhearts.hhs.gov and make a commitment to

  • Prevent heart disease and stroke by understanding your risks
  • Get active by exercising for 30 minutes several days a week
  • Know your ABCS: A - Appropriate Aspirin Therapy B- Blood Pressure Control C-Cholesterol Control S-Stop Smoking
  • Stay strong by eating a heart-healthy diet
  • Take control of your heart health by following your doctor's instructions for medications and treatment.

Major CDC/DASH Funding Cut Alert
Take action to save services!!
In the 2012 federal budget passed in December, a devastating 25% cut for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) reduced its funding from $40 to $30 million. This far-reaching cut affects the 71 state, local, tribal and territorial education agencies currently being funded by CDC/DASH to implement HIV/STD prevention through school policy, programs and practices. This national infrastructure of HIV coordinators provides essential training, resources and technical assistance to teachers who impact the 49 million young people in U.S. schools. The coordinators make significant connections with other state and local health prevention groups, gain entre to schools for other important national health prevention initiatives and provide expertise in obtaining additional federal and local funding. If nothing is done, this crippling 25% cut will greatly diminish the capacity of education agencies to deliver these crucial services.

While working to restore the funding lost, we also need to ensure that DASH is fully funded moving forward. Work on the Fiscal Year 2013 budget begins in early February and Members of Congress need to hear from us now. Share this information with your networks, leaders and key stakeholders. Every letter, email and phone call makes a difference. DASH funding is absolutely critical to the future of quality HIV/STD prevention education in schools and the young people they serve.

Take action and sign a petition that will go to your elected officials.

NJAHPERD Actively Monitors Legislation
Did you know that NJAHPERD pays a legislative consultant to monitor bills that come forward that affect our profession? We also work closely and seek advice from the AHA Government Relations Director on Health and Physical Education issues.

Federal Legislation

Stay in the KNOW...

A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! The bill would also create a block grant to support local education programming, including those that promote healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness. Check the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center regularly for updates!

NJAHPERD has signed on to the attached ESEA letter in support of federal legislative language that would acknowledge and recognize the vital role health education and physical education play in a student's school day, academic achievement, and overall health and well-being. It would grant schools greater flexibility in using federal funds for education including health education and physical education.

Food Allergy Policy Guide

The National School Boards Association (NSBA) is pleased to announce the release of "Safe at School and Ready to Learn: a Comprehensive Policy Guide for Protecting Students with Life-Threatening Food Allergies."

Developed with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this new guide is designed to help school leaders and schools establish comprehensive policies and practices that support the safety, well-being, and academic success of students with life-threatening food allergies. The guide focuses on the need for schools to partner with families, and healthcare providers in identifying and supporting individual student needs and preparing management plans. Further, it provides recommendations on following medication protocols; establishing a coordinated system to
prevent and respond to food allergy-related emergencies across the school environment; communicating with and educating parents, students, and school personnel; and monitoring and evaluating policies and practices.

The publication also includes a checklist for schools to assess the extent to which the guide's components are included in food allergy policies and practices being developed and implemented; sample state and local education policies; a glossary of commonly used terms; and a list of resources related to food allergies.

The guide is available for download through NSBA's food allergy webpage. For further information on this publication, please email.
