2012 NASPE Award Joy of Effort Award Winner
Congratulations, Lilyan B. Wright, New Hampshire (formerly of NJ) Lylian Wright

NJAHPERD is excited to announce that our own Lilyan Wright is this year's recipient of the 2012 NASPE Joy of Effort Award. Lilyan was nominated by both NJAHPERD, and New Hampshire AHPERD, and was the "slam dunk" choice by the national awards committee!

During her career that has spanned over 70 years, Lilyan has made enormous contributions to our profession. She was a teacher and coach at the High School level prior to her 29 years at Trenton State College as a professor, coach, department chair, and athletic director. Just this year, at the age of 91, she retired from officiating both Field Hockey and Lacrosse. It is estimated that she has been on an athletic field or court for over 5,000 games as a coach or official (and that number is probably low). She still is teaching fitness classes to the elderly in New Hampshire, and continues to attend both New Jersey's and New Hampshire's state conferences. Both states have awards named in her honor; ours being the student of the year award and New Hampshire has the Lilyan B. Wright service award.

She will be recognized at the NASPE Awards Banquet in Boston during the AAHPERD National Convention. We are asking everyone in our state to attend the banquet in support of our 92 year young New Jersey treasure! Congratulations Lilyan...you are the definition of Joy of Effort, and this award is long overdue! See you all at the banquet in Boston...let's "pack the house for Lil"!

Please join us in celebrating Lilyan's accomplishments at the Hall of Fame Banquet, AAHPERD Convention, Friday, March 16 at 7 pm at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston.  Please purchase your banquet tickets prior to the convention to enjoy savings. We hope you will join us for this annual celebration of the profession! Tell your friends and colleagues!

The News & Observer Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Testing has driven the nation's education agenda during the No Child Left Behind decade, but now another debate is emerging: how much physical education children need during the school day. As childhood obesity rates climb to disturbing levels, some say schools must do more than hold daily recess when it comes to keeping children fit. At the same time, a growing body of research suggests that exercise boosts students' learning and academic achievement. MORE

Worries mount over lack of physical education in schools
The Bellingham Herald

With public schools cutting back on spending for physical education, some members of Congress want to intervene, worried that the nation's schools are churning out too many fat kids.

The cutbacks are happening across the country...

When Congress considers overhauling its federal education law early this year, Smith and a bipartisan group of 84 other House members want to include language that would pressure schools to offer more PE: Their idea is to force school officials to issue yearly reports on how much time students engage in physical activity, making it easier for the public to compare schools. Harsh childhood obesity ads: Effective or stigmatizing?

My Health News Daily Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new, in-your-face ad campaign in Georgia against childhood obesity is sparking controversy among health experts. The ads feature overweight children along with blunt messages such as, "It's hard to be a little girl if you're not." While the ads certainly have raised awareness of the problem of childhood obesity, they may not be the best way to tackle the issue, some experts say. Moreover, in an effort to be direct, the ads may be too minimal, neglecting to inform the public about ways to prevent obesity or the health risks associated with the condition. MORE

Rankings for the Healthiest States

Progress in the fight against obesity, heart disease, and several other public-health scourges all but ground to a halt in the past year, although as usual a person's chances of being in good health varied widely by location, according to the latest state-by-state rankings of the nation's health.

As they have in the past, northeastern states dominated the top of the rankings, while states in the southeastern United States were clustered at the bottom. Vermont -- with its low rate of infectious disease, high use of early prenatal care, and relative lack of violent crime -- was deemed the healthiest state for the second year in a row, followed by New Hampshire, Connecticut, Hawaii, and Massachusetts. We encourage you to apply for PEP funding!

PEP has been funded at $78.8 million for FY 2012. This is equal to the funding provided in FY 2011. Many other education programs were zeroed out for FY 2012 so it is very fortunate that PEP made the cut. Some in Congress ready to act against schools' PE cutbacks
The Seattle Times

School officials expect the fight over funding to intensify this year in Washington, D.C., with education facing automatic cuts of $3.5 billion in 2013 - roughly 8 percent of the overall budget - after a congressional supercommittee failed to deliver a $1.2 trillion deficit-reduction plan in November.

Currently, only five states - Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Mexico and Vermont - require physical education every year from kindergarten through 12th grade. And no federal law requires PE to be offered.

Forty-eight states have their own standards for physical education, but only two-thirds of them require local districts to comply, according to a 2010 report by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, known as NASPE.

The report, called "Shape of the Nation," said that nearly two-thirds of all high-school students are not getting enough exercise, with more than a third of them watching television for at least three hours a day. MORE

NJAHPERD Actively Monitors Legislation
Did you know that NJAHPERD pays a legislative consultant to monitor bills that come forward that affect our profession? We also work closely and seek advice from the AHA Government Relations Director on Health and Physical Education issues.

Federal Legislation

Stay in the KNOW...

A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! The bill would also create a block grant to support local education programming, including those that promote healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness. Check the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center regularly for updates!

We urgently need your help!  Over the past two years members from our coalition of organizations have worked diligently to have Physical Education and Health Education included as core subjects in ESEA. Last year we were thrilled to work with Senator Udall's (NM) office on the introduction of the PHYSICAL Act and were equally excited when Senator Bingaman (NM) joined him as a co-sponsor. In September, Republican Senator Burr included PE as a core subject in his education bill. HELP Committee Chairman, Tom Harkin is ready to introduce his ESEA bill and has scheduled a Committee meeting on October 18th or 19th to vote on the bill. In an effort to ensure that HE and PE are ultimately included in ESEA. We are asking that you once again contact members of the Senate HELP Committee with the following message.

We are requesting that all of our members send this email to Senators Harkin and Enzi.

Thank you!

"Cool your engine" strategies from the January 2012 issue of healthy Highway Newsletter.
Sometimes students need a little time to "cool" their engines off and may have to take a little time in the "garage". Here are a few strategies that will allow them to think about what they said or did:

* Take 3 deep breaths before returning to the activity.
* Ask for a 1 minute "pit stop" to talk with the teacher.
* Take a slow walk around the perimeter of the activity area.
* Perform one of the Healthy Highway exercises: green bean lean (wall push up);
* orange squeeze (squeeze an orange ball).; apple core (place a red ball on abs and perform 5 sit ups.)

If there is a conflict between 2 students, send them to the "garage" where they will perform the right, left, both, handshake and repeat Rule #6: "Be kind, be fair, be a friend." Then they may return to the activity.

Food Allergy Policy Guide
National School Boards Association
The National School Boards Association (NSBA) is pleased to announce the release of "Safe at School and Ready to Learn: a Comprehensive Policy Guide for Protecting Students with Life-Threatening Food Allergies."

Developed with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this new guide is designed to help school leaders and schools establish comprehensive policies and practices that support the safety, well-being, and academic success of students with life-threatening food allergies. The guide focuses on the need for schools to partner with families, and healthcare providers in identifying and supporting individual student needs and preparing management plans. Further, it provides recommendations on following medication protocols; establishing a coordinated system to
prevent and respond to food allergy-related emergencies across the school environment; communicating with and educating parents, students, and school personnel; and monitoring and evaluating policies and practices.

The publication also includes a checklist for schools to assess the extent to which the guide's components are included in food allergy policies and practices being developed and implemented; sample state and local education policies; a glossary of commonly used terms; and a list of resources related to food allergies.

The guide is available for download through NSBA's food allergy webpage. For further information on this publication, please email.
