Happy New Year! | Welcome to 2012! I hope your holidays were happy, healthy, and fit! Welcome back to 2012!!
My wish for all is for a year of success, a year of inspiration, a year of motivation and a year of determination! I posted on Facebook the other day, "Remember, your worst run is always 100% better than the person who never tries!" Make this the year you "run" no matter what. Decide today what you want to accomplish this year. Write it down. Post it where you'll see it. Create a plan to achieve it. Let others know you're doing it. And, RUN!!! Give it your all! I guarantee by year's end, you'll be closer to your dreams than you ever thought possible...who knows, maybe you'll even be living them!!
Here's to making 2012 YOUR year!!
Happy, healthy and fit! Suzette |

Healthy Schools Program |
Help reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015
Schools are powerful places to shape the health, education and well-being of our children. That is why the Alliance's Healthy Schools Program supports more than 12,000 schools across the U.S. in their efforts to create environments where physical activity and healthy eating are accessible and encouraged.
The Alliance collaborates with school staff, parents, students and community members to transform schools into healthy campuses. We provide a step-by-step roadmap for success, a resource database and expert staff that helps schools become healthier places.
Make healthy schools the norm, not the exception. MORE |
NJAHPERD Membership Campaign
|
What is one of the best way to advocate for the profession? Educate others!
Do you have colleagues who need a "nudge" to become more involved in the profession? Do they need to be updated on current best practices? Have they participated in content specific professional development? Our profession will never be considered an academic subject or gain the respect it deserves with the public and decision makers without improvement in our programs. Please do your part to discuss the value of membership in NJAHPERD and AAHPERD with your administrators and colleagues.
The following documents may help you with talking points. Please distribute to colleagues and your building administrator/supervisor. There are 7000 Health & Physical educators in the state that are not members of their professional organization. We need all to be current in the profession.

2012 NASPE Award Joy of Effort Award Winner |
Congratulations, Lilyan B. Wright, New Hampshire (formerly of NJ)
NJAHPERD is excited to announce that our own Lilyan Wright is this year's recipient of the 2012 NASPE Joy of Effort Award. Lilyan was nominated by both NJAHPERD, and New Hampshire AHPERD, and was the "slam dunk" choice by the national awards committee!
During her career that has spanned over 70 years, Lilyan has made enormous contributions to our profession. She was a teacher and coach at the High School level prior to her 29 years at Trenton State College as a professor, coach, department chair, and athletic director. Just this year, at the age of 91, she retired from officiating both Field Hockey and Lacrosse. It is estimated that she has been on an athletic field or court for over 5,000 games as a coach or official (and that number is probably low). She still is teaching fitness classes to the elderly in New Hampshire, and continues to attend both New Jersey's and New Hampshire's state conferences. Both states have awards named in her honor; ours being the student of the year award and New Hampshire has the Lilyan B. Wright service award.
She will be recognized at the NASPE Awards Banquet in Boston during the AAHPERD National Convention. We are asking everyone in our state to attend the banquet in support of our 92 year young New Jersey treasure! Congratulations Lilyan...you are the definition of Joy of Effort, and this award is long overdue! See you all at the banquet in Boston...let's "pack the house for Lil"!
Please join us in celebrating Lilyan's accomplishments at the Hall of Fame Banquet, AAHPERD Convention, Friday, March 16 at 7 pm at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston. Please purchase your banquet tickets prior to the convention to enjoy savings. We hope you will join us for this annual celebration of the profession! Tell your friends and colleagues! |

Childhood obesity best battled in schools, research finds |
In the struggle against widespread obesity that begins in early childhood, new research indicates that schools may be the best place to start a solution. Australian researchers examined 55 interventions in previous studies and concluded that school-based programs were key in getting kids to healthy weights, and there was little evidence that these programs would have a negative effect on young students' self-images. Young athletes and energy drinks: A bad mix? |
The Gatorade cooler and the coffee pot in the locker room have competition. From youth playing fields to major league clubhouses, caffeinated energy drinks such as Red Bull and its scores of cousins have become a familiar presence in sports. "The bottom line is, it's a long season. You're going to do what you have to do, whether you feel like you have to jump into a cryogenic freezing tank or a hyperbaric chamber or drink a Red Bull," said Texas Rangers pitcher C.J. Wilson, a World Series starter who says he has never used alcohol or drugs but consumes energy drinks socially and to prepare himself to pitch. "I see nothing wrong with drinking Red Bull." Some athletes and industry officials compare the beverages to a cup of coffee. MORE

PEP has been funded at $78.8 million for FY 2012 |
We encourage you to apply for PEP funding!
PEP has been funded at $78.8 million for FY 2012. This is equal to the funding provided in FY 2011. The House and the Senate came to an agreement on the omnibus appropriations bill for FY 2012 late on December 15. The House passed the measure on December 16 and the Senate on December 17. Many other education programs were zeroed out for FY 2012 so it is very fortunate that PEP made the cut. The US Department of Education will release more information about submitting grant applications for FY 2012 grants as it is available. MORE
Thank you to all NJAHPERD members who contacted their legislators to continue PEP funding. We encourage you to apply for the grant! |

Stay in the KNOW...
A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! The bill would also create a block grant to support local education programming, including those that promote healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness. Check the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center regularly for updates!
We urgently need your help! Over the past two years members from our coalition of organizations have worked diligently to have Physical Education and Health Education included as core subjects in ESEA. Last year we were thrilled to work with Senator Udall's (NM) office on the introduction of the PHYSICAL Act and were equally excited when Senator Bingaman (NM) joined him as a co-sponsor. In September, Republican Senator Burr included PE as a core subject in his education bill. HELP Committee Chairman, Tom Harkin is ready to introduce his ESEA bill and has scheduled a Committee meeting on October 18th or 19th to vote on the bill. In an effort to ensure that HE and PE are ultimately included in ESEA. We are asking that you once again contact members of the Senate HELP Committee with the following message.
We are requesting that all of our members send this email to Senators Harkin and Enzi.
Thank you!
