Happy Holidays from your President! | On behalf of NJAHPERD, I would like to wish everyone a safe, happy, healthy and fit holiday season and New Year! Enjoy and make the most of time spent with family and friends.
This is OUR season - the most popular New Year's resolution is, "I want to lose weight," followed by, "I will get back to the gym/exercising". What a wonderful opportunity we have to encourage and promote physical activity and fitness.
Be safe and enjoy the holidays. Fran Kreisberg |
Happy Holidays from your FYI Editor...a "running" commentary | ...and here's to a healthy, happy and fit New Year! The holidays are my most favorite time of year! Although it means moving my long runs indoor on a treadmill (I don't like the cold!), I love the spirit of the season. Can I get caught up in the rushing, the stress, the family chaos, the budget crunch of gift-giving, the "fill in your own stressor?" Absolutely!! But, I find that my passion for running and fitness and my passion for people go hand in hand this time of year. Just as I make a decision every day to run and be healthy, I find this time of year I must make a decision every day regarding my attitude, my mood and my interaction with others.
Running keeps me sane and in the midst of everything during this season, I make the time move. Running centers me and allows me to choose to enjoy every day of the holiday season, regardless of traffic, grumpy people and long lines!
During this time of year, my goal is to brighten the lives of those with whom I come in contact. I have found that running "evens me out" to do just that. Because of running, my stress is decreased, my mood is elevated and I feel alive and healthy! My hope during this time of year, is to spread the love and joy of the season to others and be an example of the spirit of the holidays. Imagine what the world would be like if we could keep this holiday spirit all year through? Well, just like running, I believe we can...it is our choice!
I wish for you, your families and for everyone whose lives you touch a most blessed, healthy, happy and fit holiday season and new year! I hope you make the choice to continue to be active and fit throughout this most busy time of year and to continue to be an example to those around you. I hope you brighten the days of everyone in your life. And, I hope this edition provides valuable information for you to use as you help change the lives of those you teach!
Happy Holidays, Suzette de Araujo |
Advocate and Educate...the value of Physical Education |
Letters to Governor Christie
NJAHPERD, AAHPERD and American Heart Association responded to the Governor's comments made during a live Facebook chat stating that math and science teachers should be paid more than physical education teachers.
NJAHPERD will continue to advocate for quality health and physical education programs and the importance of educating the "whole child" but we can't do it without you. We need you to continue to provide quality instruction and assessments in every lesson. We also need you to encourage your colleagues to do the same, especially if they are lacking resources provided through membership in NJAHPERD. Discuss the importance of staying current, the use of technology, available health resources or simply keeping students active during physical education class with them. Be relentless in your efforts to advocate and educate, so that everyone, including the Governor, will see the value of your program.
We have invited the Governor to attend the Annual Convention to experience for himself the committment and passion our NJAHPERD members have for the profession and the students they teach.
This is an amazing time to be a health and physical education professional. What we do every day to encourage a lifetime of health and wellness for our students is priceless.
We welcome your comments and involvement in advocacy issues. Call or email the NJAHPERD office. |

Healthy Schools Program |
Help reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015
Schools are powerful places to shape the health, education and well-being of our children. That is why the Alliance's Healthy Schools Program supports more than 12,000 schools across the U.S. in their efforts to create environments where physical activity and healthy eating are accessible and encouraged.
The Alliance collaborates with school staff, parents, students and community members to transform schools into healthy campuses. We provide a step-by-step roadmap for success, a resource database and expert staff that helps schools become healthier places.
Make healthy schools the norm, not the exception. MORE |

What is one of the best way to advocate for the profession? Educate others!
Do you have colleagues who need a "nudge" to become more involved in the profession? Do they need to be updated on current best practices? Have they participated in content specific professional development? Our profession will never be considered an academic subject or gain the respect it deserves with the public and decision makers without improvement in our programs. Please do your part to discuss the value of membership in NJAHPERD and AAHPERD with your administrators and colleagues.
The following documents may help you with talking points. Please distribute to colleagues and your building administrator/supervisor. There are 7000 Health & Physical educators in the state that are not members of their professional organization. We need all to be current in the profession.

Remarks by US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan about a well-rounded curriculum |
U.S. Department of Education Share
In my remarks, I want to raise a fundamental question for you to think about today. I want to offer one answer-and then I want to hear your thoughts. The question is this:
How can we promote both a well-rounded education with rich offerings across all subjects-civics, geography, economics and history, the arts, foreign languages, physical education, the sciences etc.-and simultaneously create a system of real and meaningful accountability that doesn't lead to narrowing of the curriculum? Tenafly students show their can-do attitude
In an effort to give back to the community, the physical education department of Tenafly Middle School decided approximately five years ago to incorporate a food drive into its curriculum. Starting at the beginning of November, students are asked to bring canned food to donate to local food pantries, which culminates in building a "canstructure" out of the cans on the day before Thanksgiving.
The building of the "canstructure" coincides with an annual dance held for all grades in the school. Each year, the students learn about dances from different time periods, including the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and country western dancing, said Sue Toth, a physical education teacher... MORE |

Congratulations!
 | Breaking the Jumping Jacks World Record |
First Lady Michelle Obama is announcing some really exciting news today, and she wanted you to be the very first to know about it.
Back in October, the First Lady joined students, teachers, and parents from all over the country to reach for a big goal: partnering with National Geographic Kids to break the world record for the number of people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period. The old record was over 20,000 people, so trying to break it was no small feat. Today, we're proud to announce that with your help, 300,265 people jumped that day! Breaking the record is a huge accomplishment. But we still have a lot of work left to do to meet an even bigger goal: ending childhood obesity within a generation so all children have a chance to grow up healthy and strong. To reach that goal, we need to make sure that all kids are getting the nutrition they need, have a chance to be active each day and get support from our schools, families and communities. That's what Let's Move! is all about. |
Jumping Jack Record broken! |
Congratulations Jumpers!
Way to go jumpers! With your help, National Geographic Kids has broken the Guinness World Record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period! Between 3 p.m. on October 11 and 3 p.m. on October 12, 300,265 jumpers all over the world took part in the event--far surpassing the existing record of 20,425! MORE

NASPE recommendation for PE quoted in RWJ Funded Survey! |
Information you can use to advocate in your district!
NASPE's recommendation for 150 minutes of physical education per week and the Shape of the Nation Report are quoted in this new Robert Wood Johnson funded survey about state laws mandating P.E. and recess linking these laws with increased in-school physical activity among children by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago. An apple a day...powerful video for health education advocacy |
by Taylor Mali
"An Apple a Day Is Not Enough" is a powerful poem written and performed by Taylor Mali (a well-known spoken word artist and teacher) about the importance of health education. It's done in the style of kinetic typography. We must get the word out about the importance of health education and its ability to get this country's health back on track-but we can't do it alone. Documentary focuses on teenager as it looks at national childhood obesity crisis |
The Austin American-Statesman Share
When Ashley Castoreno was a baby, her parents put Big Red soda in her bottle to quiet her. Growing up, she never learned to bike or swim. At school, someone once taped a sign on her back that said, "Don't feed the cow." By the time she was a senior in high school, Castoreno was more than 100 pounds overweight - and typical of a growing segment of American children. But in the past year and a half, Castoreno, now 20, has shed weight, gotten hooked on running and traveled to Washington, D.C., to tell legislators what it's like to grow up obese and why it's important to keep physical education in the classroom. The movement continuum
|
The Whole Child Blog Share
This month's theme is about integrating movement across the school day. It's a theme that aims to look at not only why physical activity should be incorporated into and across the school day, but also how it can be. Regarding the why, the research is pretty solid. There are cognitive benefits associated with physical activity, including improved memory, concentration, attention and academic performance. All of these and other benefits were succinctly summarized by Charles Basch back in May 2010 with his publication Healthier Students Are Better Learners: A Missing Link in School Reforms to Close the Achievement Gap. How exercise will change our brains for the better |
Whether it affects that child with ADHD who has difficulty sitting quietly in a classroom or an adult who can't keep from eating that 770-calorie Cinnabon that they see and smell in the mall food court, too-frequent impulsive behaviors can be a consistent source of creating problems in our life. Now a simple, effective and readily available treatment for this impulsivity may have been discovered, and we won't have to wait for laboratory testing or FDA approval to use it in our lives: exercise. Resistance training is far from futile |
The State Journal-Register Share
Strength training is a growing trend, according to the annual survey by the American College of Sports Medicine. It ranks No. 2 - up from No. 6 in 2007 - among the most popular trends for 2012, according to the poll of 2,620 fitness professionals, including certified trainers and exercise physiologists. And there's new evidence that strength and resistance training can have other benefits. MORE |
Physical activity impacts overall quality of sleep |
People sleep significantly better and feel more alert during the day if they get at least 150 minutes of exercise a week, a new study concludes. A nationally representative sample of more than 2,600 men and women, ages 18-85, found that 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a week, which is the national guideline, provided a 65 percent improvement in sleep quality. People also said they felt less sleepy during the day, compared to those with less physical activity. MORE |
School uses yoga for physical education |
In a small room that doubles as a tiny school library, shoeless school children close their eyes and hum. Some wiggle their toes or wobble on one leg when their teacher models a stretch. Soft music plays on a stereo. "Let's be quiet. OK. Inhale. Exhale," said Melinda Stanislawczyk, a volunteer who teaches the once-a-week class. Students listen as Stanislawczyk explains that the deep-breathing relaxation techniques will help them before a test. MORE |

Created by the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council in consultation with the public and an Advisory Group of outside experts, the Strategy recognizes that good health comes not just from receiving quality medical care but from stopping disease before it starts. Good health also comes from clean air and water, safe outdoor spaces for physical activity, safe worksites, healthy foods, violence-free environments and healthy homes. Prevention should be woven into all aspects of our lives, including where and how we live, learn, work and play. Everyone-businesses, educators, health care institutions, government, communities and every single American-has a role in creating a healthier nation.

Help Keep PEP ALIVE! |
Physical Education IS NOT dodgeball!
We all know what we receive can be taken away so I want to encourage you to keep PEP alive! The Senate is proposing level funding of $78.8 million for the 2012-2013 school year. However, the House is committed to spending cuts and has suggested that PEP is duplicative of other "physical activity" programs.
Congress needs to understand that PEP is not dodgeball and regular physical activity is no substitute for quality physical education! Please CLICK HERE and send a letter to Congress requesting continued funding of PEP.
SPARK Principal Dr. Thom McKenzie says, "If exercise is medicine, physical education is the pill not taken." Let's keep PEP healthy so we can keep our youth healthy too. Thanks in advance for your support.

NJAHPERD Actively Monitors Legislation |
Did you know that NJAHPERD pays a legislative consultant to monitor bills that come forward that affect our profession? We also work closely and seek advice from the AHA Government Relations Director on Health and Physical Education issues.
NJAHPERD Supports the TEEN DRIVING BILL- A3309 (Wisniewski/Lampitt)
The Assembly Transportation Committee unanimously approved A3309, which would lengthen the driving permit from 6 to 12 months, require teens to log practice hours in the permit phase, and attend an orientation with a parent, guardian or supervising adult as a pre-requisite for obtaining a permit. NJAHPERD supports the bill and provided written testimony to the Committee on Monday 11/28 along with NJ Teen Safe Driving Coalition members. An amendment to require an online orientation for parent and teen has been added to the original bill. The bill now moves to the Assembly for a full vote (no voting date is set at this time). The Senate version of the bill -- S3058 (sponsored by Senator Stack) -- has been assigned to the Budget and Appropriations Committee, but it has yet to be vetted. If the bill is approved by both houses, it would then go to the Governor for his signature. NJAHPERD will continue to monitor progress. For more information visit the NJ Teen Driving Facebook Page

Stay in the KNOW...
A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! The bill would also create a block grant to support local education programming, including those that promote healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness. Check the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center regularly for updates!
We urgently need your help! Over the past two years members from our coalition of organizations have worked diligently to have Physical Education and Health Education included as core subjects in ESEA. Last year we were thrilled to work with Senator Udall's (NM) office on the introduction of the PHYSICAL Act and were equally excited when Senator Bingaman (NM) joined him as a co-sponsor. In September, Republican Senator Burr included PE as a core subject in his education bill. HELP Committee Chairman, Tom Harkin is ready to introduce his ESEA bill and has scheduled a Committee meeting on October 18th or 19th to vote on the bill. In an effort to ensure that HE and PE are ultimately included in ESEA. We are asking that you once again contact members of the Senate HELP Committee with the following message.
We are requesting that all of our members send this email to Senators Harkin and Enzi.
Thank you!
