Advocate and Educate...the value of Physical Education |
Letters to Governor Christie
NJAHPERD, AAHPERD and American Heart Association responded the Governor's comments made during a live Facebook chat stating that math and science teachers should be paid more than physical education teachers.
NJAHPERD will continue to advocate for quality health and physical education programs and the importance of educating the "whole child" but we can't do it without you. We need you to continue to provide quality instruction and assessments in every lesson. We also need you to encourage your colleagues to do the same, especially if they are lacking resources provided through membership in NJAHPERD. Discuss the importance of staying current, the use of technology, available health resources or simply keeping students active during physical education class with them. Be relentless in your efforts to advocate and educate, so that everyone, including the Governor, will see the value of your program.
This is an amazing time to be a health and physical education professional. What we do every day to encourage a lifetime of health and wellness for our students is priceless.
We welcome your comments and involment in advocacy issues. Call or email the NJAHPERD office. |

Do you have colleagues who need a "nudge" to become more involved in the profession? Do they need to be updated on current best practices? National Prevention Strategy: America's Plan for Better Health and Wellness |
Become part of the plan
The National Prevention Strategy is a comprehensive plan that will help increase the number of Americans who are healthy at every stage of life. Created by the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council in consultation with the public and an Advisory Group of outside experts, the Strategy recognizes that good health comes not just from receiving quality medical care but from stopping disease before it starts. Good health also comes from clean air and water, safe outdoor spaces for physical activity, safe worksites, healthy foods, violence-free environments and healthy homes. Prevention should be woven into all aspects of our lives, including where and how we live, learn, work and play. Everyone-businesses, educators, health care institutions, government, communities and every single American-has a role in creating a healthier nation.
Find out how you can become part of the plan as a Health and Physical Education professional.

Healthy lifestyle 'can have same effects as anti-depressants' |
Healthcare research has shown that a good diet and regular exercise could help combat depression as well as obesity, according to one expert. Michelle Clemons, a mindfulness-based master practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming and author of Transforming Stress to Success, suggested that regular exercise can have a significant impact in lowering the risk of depression - equal to the effects of some anti-depressant drugs. The latest research: Physical fitness and academic excellence go together
|
Provo Psychology Examiner Share
Yet another study has found that students who are in better shape physically also do better in school. Published online, this new research surprised some experts by finding no strong connection between Body Mass Index and academic performance. The best predictor of success at school was cardiovascular fitness. Perhaps this surprise can be explained by the BMI's poor accuracy. For years, many researchers have been concerned that we are routinely using the BMI, which is generally less accurate than methods such as water displacement tests, DEXA scans, or even waist size. Head Start Body Start Project at AAHPERD has increased physical activity for more than 28,000 children |
More than 1,500 grants to improve Head Start centers' outdoor play spaces and educate staff, children and their families about the value of physical activity and playing outdoors, have led to a dramatic increase in the outdoor activity levels of more than 28,000 preschool children over the past three years, say officials from Head Start Body Start National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play, an initiative of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Waking up to young kids' sleep troubles
|
The Wall Street Journal Share
According to the National Sleep Foundation, two-thirds of kids in the years through middle school aren't getting adequate sleep, which, for these ages, is 10 to 12 hours. James B. Maas, a professor of psychology at Cornell University, puts that figure higher, at around 85 percent. A study published in 1999 showed that about 10 percent of school-age kids through fourth grade fall asleep in school-and parents and experts will tell you that the problem, enhanced by the age of Internet and iPod, has only grown worse. Study: Banning sugary soda from school fails to cut teen consumption
|
Banning sugar-filled sodas from American schools as an effort to combat childhood obesity doesn't reduce overall consumption levels of sweetened beverages, research found. In U.S. states that banned only soda, about 30 percent of middle-school students still purchased sugary drinks like sports and fruit beverages at school, similar to states that had no policy, according to a study released online in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. In states that banned all sugar-sweetened beverages, students still consumed the drinks outside of school, the researchers said. MORE |

Help Keep PEP ALIVE! |
Physical Education IS NOT dodgeball!
We all know what we receive can be taken away so I want to encourage you to keep PEP alive! The Senate is proposing level funding of $78.8 million for the 2012-2013 school year. However, the House is committed to spending cuts and has suggested that PEP is duplicative of other "physical activity" programs.
Congress needs to understand that PEP is not dodgeball and regular physical activity is no substitute for quality physical education! Please CLICK HERE and send a letter to Congress requesting continued funding of PEP.
SPARK Principal Dr. Thom McKenzie says, "If exercise is medicine, physical education is the pill not taken." Let's keep PEP healthy so we can keep our youth healthy too. Thanks in advance for your support.

Poor Performance at Secondary Level in Cardiovascular Health - Useful for your advocacy efforts |
CDC
Data from the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey revealed a poor overall performance among those age 12 to 19 on the American Heart Association's criteria for ideal cardiovascular health. None of the adolescents met recommended targets in all five nutrition categories, and only 20% did for two or three of the nutrition factors. A majority also failed to meet the optimal target of more than 60 minutes a day of exercise, researchers reported at the AHA annual scientific meeting. MORE

Play and Learning - Article Supports Your Potential Advocacy Efforts |
The Washington Post
A pilot curriculum that uses intense and structured play to improve students' "executive function" is being used with preschool, pre-K and kindergarten students at 28 Washington, D.C., schools this year. The Tools of the Mind curriculum is based on the work of the late Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, who believed that play was essential to learning. Among other things, the new curriculum -- which targets disadvantaged students -- also is meant to improve students' classroom behavior, reduce gender stereotypes and raise academic achievement.MORE |

NJAHPERD Actively Monitors Legislation |
Did you know that NJAHPERD pays a legislative consultant to monitor bills that come forward that affect our profession? We also work closely and seek advice from the AHA Government Relations Director on Health and Physical Education issues.
NJAHPERD Supports the TEEN DRIVING BILL- A3309 (Wisniewski/Lampitt)
The Assembly Transportation Committee unanimously approved A3309, which would lengthen the driving permit from 6 to 12 months, require teens to log practice hours in the permit phase, and attend an orientation with a parent, guardian or supervising adult as a pre-requisite for obtaining a permit. NJAHPERD supports the bill and provided written testimony to the Committee on Monday 11/28 along with NJ Teen Safe Driving Coalition members. An ammendment to require an online orientation for parent and teen has been added to the original bill. The bill now moves to the Assembly for a full vote (no voting date is set at this time). The Senate version of the bill -- S3058 (sponsored by Senator Stack) -- has been assigned to the Budget and Appropriations Committee, but it has yet to be vetted. If the bill is approved by both houses, it would then go to the Governor for his signature. NJAHPERD will continue to monitor progress. For more information visit the NJ Teen Driving Facebook Page

Stay in the KNOW...
A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! The bill would also create a block grant to support local education programming, including those that promote healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness. Check the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center regularly for updates!
We urgently need your help! Over the past two years members from our coalition of organizations have worked diligently to have Physical Education and Health Education included as core subjects in ESEA. Last year we were thrilled to work with Senator Udall's (NM) office on the introduction of the PHYSICAL Act and were equally excited when Senator Bingaman (NM) joined him as a co-sponsor. In September, Republican Senator Burr included PE as a core subject in his education bill. HELP Committee Chairman, Tom Harkin is ready to introduce his ESEA bill and has scheduled a Committee meeting on October 18th or 19th to vote on the bill. In an effort to ensure that HE and PE are ultimately included in ESEA. We are asking that you once again contact members of the Senate HELP Committee with the following message.
We are requesting that all of our members send this email to Senators Harkin and Enzi.
Thank you!
