Help reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015
Schools are powerful places to shape the health, education and well-being of our children. That is why the Alliance's Healthy Schools Program supports more than 12,000 schools across the U.S. in their efforts to create environments where physical activity and healthy eating are accessible and encouraged.
The Alliance collaborates with school staff, parents, students and community members to transform schools into healthy campuses. We provide a step-by-step roadmap for success, a resource database and expert staff that helps schools become healthier places.
Make healthy schools the norm, not the exception. MORE |
NJAHPERD Membership Campaign
|
What is one of the best way to advocate for the profession? Educate others!
Do you have colleagues who need a "nudge" to become more involved in the profession? Do they need to be updated on current best practices? Have they participated in content specific professional development? Our profession will never be considered an academic subject or gain the respect it deserves with the public and decision makers without improvement in our programs. Please do your part to discuss the value of membership in NJAHPERD and AAHPERD with your administrators and colleagues.
The following documents may help you with talking points. Please distribute to colleagues and your building administrator/supervisor. There are 7000 Health & Physical educators in the state that are not members of their professional organization. We need all to be current in the profession.

Do you BELIEVE? Patricia Robbins, PE Teacher, Millville NJ does...See what could happen for you when you BELIEVE... |
Classroom Close-UP NJ & Mt. Pleasant School, Millville, NJ
Tune in on Feb. 19 & March 25 at 12:30pm & 7:30pm!
In the spring of 2011 I saw an advertisement requesting proposals for exemplary programs happening in our public schools in New Jersey. When I read the advertisement from Classroom Close-Up NJ I thought about so many different initiatives and programs happening in my school and in my district. When I gave it more thought I began to think of why my program could not be one such program highlighted. I received encouragement from colleagues that told me to be a cheerleader for my own program and get the attention it deserves. Under more thought and advise I realize. that as educators, we need to be our own supporters if we truly believe in what we do.
The process I followed to apply for a spot on Classroom Close-Up NJ was to email them and describe the program that I wanted to be highlighted. That experience alone gives much credibility to all the hard work that you as an educator and your students put in. It was not until early fall of 2011 that I received a response to my request. I had actually forgotten that I submitted a proposal. In responding to the invitation to be taped I gained access to a representative of the network to begin to work out the logistics.
The process has been very positive and the support I received was tremendous. Classroom Close-Up NJ contacted my principal and superintendent for approval to begin setting a date. Classroom Close-Up NJ provides all video permission slips, advertisement papers, press releases and will bring all equipment for interviewing. My students are excited about the upcoming taping and the reality of being on TV.
Our taping is scheduled for November 30 and our airing of the segment will be February 19 and March 25 at 12:30 pm and 7:30 pm.
Please join us and watch! Celebrate our profession and the great things we do every day for our students! |
Congratulations! |

Exercise could counter the effects of the 'obesity gene' |
Having a so-called obesity gene doesn't necessarily doom you to being fat, a study finds - if you stay active. A meta-analysis that included 45 studies of 218,166 adults looked at the effect physical activity had on being saddled with a gene associated with fat mass and obesity, otherwise known as the FTO gene or obesity gene. Researchers found that having the gene upped the risk of being overweight or obese, as well as having a higher body mass index, a larger waist circumference and higher body fat percentage. MORE |
Budget cuts stretch PE instructors at some Florida schools |
Fifth-grader Noah Hauser loves his physical education classes, whether riding the stationary bicycle in the school fitness center or pushing himself on a monthly two-mile challenge run. It doesn't bother him a bit if it's just his class participating, or if 80-some kids from four classes are out in the field together. "It's still fun to play," said Noah, 10. "We always do fun things in P.E." MORE |
Concussion research aims to help athletes, study of the brain |
Princeton University Share
Share It's called an invisible injury, yet it affects hundreds of thousands of athletes each year. From professional boxers and college football stars, to high school soccer players and kids competing in schoolyard baseball games, concussions can be a significant injury for anyone playing sports. To address the problem, Princeton researchers Annegret Dettwiler-Danspeckgruber and Margot Putukian have spent the past four years studying sports-related concussions, aiming to improve diagnostic tools and help better determine when it's safe for athletes to return to play. School fires up iPads to fine-tune phys-ed skills |
In Gregg Agena's physical education classroom at Ewa Makai Middle School in Honolulu, students are ready for the day's lesson on basic tumbling: mats on the floor, tennis shoes off-and iPads up and at the ready. As Agena blows his whistle, half of the students perform "logrolls" and "shoulder rolls." The other half uses an iPad to film their partner. Then students switch places. iPads change hands. And Agena's whistle blows again. MORE |
In high schools, a critical lens on food |
A commercial for McDonald's fish sandwiches played in a classroom at Park Slope Collegiate in New York as part of a class called the Science of Food. It was clear that many students had seen the ad - several sang along with the jingle - but this was the first time they had been asked to critique it. "Who is the target audience for this ad?" asked their teacher, Joni Tonda. "Us!" yelled the 23 students, practically in unison.MORE |
PE teachers discover student's heart condition
|
The Des Moines Register Share
An Iowa High School senior Tricia Richards hadn't felt right for several years. She slept a lot, went to bed very early in the evening when she could, and had trouble waking up and pulling herself out of bed each morning. She literally felt exhausted most of her waking hours. The doctors and specialists she and her family visited could not provide a solution for the cause of her fatigue. Trish was told again and again, it's not life threatening, "but at this point we don't have a diagnosis for you." Eventually, it was an innovative activity in her high school PE class that provided the clue that would lead doctors to a diagnosis that would have a profound effect on Trish's health. MORE |

Help Keep PEP ALIVE! |
Physical Education IS NOT dodgeball!
We all know what we receive can be taken away so I want to encourage you to keep PEP alive! The Senate is proposing level funding of $78.8 million for the 2012-2013 school year. However, the House is committed to spending cuts and has suggested that PEP is duplicative of other "physical activity" programs.
Congress needs to understand that PEP is not dodgeball and regular physical activity is no substitute for quality physical education! Please CLICK HERE and send a letter to Congress requesting continued funding of PEP.
SPARK Principal Dr. Thom McKenzie says, "If exercise is medicine, physical education is the pill not taken." Let's keep PEP healthy so we can keep our youth healthy too. Thanks in advance for your support.

NJAHPERD Actively Monitors Legislation |
Did you know that NJAHPERD pays a legislative consultant to monitor bills that come forward that affect our profession? We also work closely and seek advice from the AHA Government Relations Director on Health and Physical Education issues.
|
|
Stay in the KNOW...
A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! The bill would also create a block grant to support local education programming, including those that promote healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness. Check the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center regularly for updates!
We urgently need your help! Over the past two years members from our coalition of organizations have worked diligently to have Physical Education and Health Education included as core subjects in ESEA. Last year we were thrilled to work with Senator Udall's (NM) office on the introduction of the PHYSICAL Act and were equally excited when Senator Bingaman (NM) joined him as a co-sponsor. In September, Republican Senator Burr included PE as a core subject in his education bill. HELP Committee Chairman, Tom Harkin is ready to introduce his ESEA bill and has scheduled a Committee meeting on October 18th or 19th to vote on the bill. In an effort to ensure that HE and PE are ultimately included in ESEA. We are asking that you once again contact members of the Senate HELP Committee with the following message.
We are requesting that all of our members send this email to Senators Harkin and Enzi.
Thank you!
