What is one of the best way to advocate for the profession? Educate others!
Do you have colleagues who need a "nudge" to become more involved in the profession? Do they need to be updated on current best practices? Have they participated in content specific professional development? Our profession will never be considered an academic subject or gain the respect it deserves with the public and decision makers without improvement in our programs. Please do your part to discuss the value of membership in NJAHPERD and AAHPERD with your administrators and colleagues.
The following documents may help you with talking points. Please distribute to colleagues and your building administrator/supervisor. There are 7000 Health & Physical educators in the state that are not members of their professional organization. We need all to be current in the profession.

The Road To Teaching Effectiveness: Where Do I Turn After Preservice Teacher Education? |
Ball State University
According to author Amber Phillips, the road to becoming an effective physical education teacher is like an old wooden roller coaster: bumpy, curvy, noisy, and full of highs and lows. How do you improve once you become a physical education teacher? Phillips describes several strategies that all teachers - but especially new ones - can use to improve their teaching effectiveness. Sweating the details |
Columbia University Share
Is physical education a thing of the past in public schools? Fewer than 20 percent of K-12 schools nationwide provide their students with opportunities to engage in physical activity before, during or after school, according to a survey released in October by the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Along with art, music and even history, both the study and the pursuit of exercise are being squeezed out of the school day because of deep budget cuts and a heavy emphasis on language arts and math, the two subjects most heavily tested for compliance with federal No Child Left Behind legislation. Getting physical: Even as PE time shrinks, educators stress its importance |
Abilene Reporter-News Share
It used to be one of Mary Herron's great fears. Now, it's just a fact that the Texas Middle School coach and physical education teacher has to accept: 30 minutes of gym class is the only time that some of her students will get any activity in a given day. During her 27 years of teaching gym, Herron has seen society shift. Kids don't play outside as much, and technological distractions often keep them glued in one spot once they go home. MORE |
New survey shows schools need to take a comprehensive approach to increasing physical activity levels of students and staff |
While schools have the opportunity to help students meet the national guidelines to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, a new survey released by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance found that only 16 percent of elementary schools, 13 percent of middle schools and 6 percent of high schools are currently providing physical activity before, during and after school - components of a comprehensive school physical activity program. Keep those muscles guessing |
With so many fitness programs to choose from these days, it's hard not to be confused about which is the best way to workout. Luckily, it turns out that confusion is good. "Muscle confusion" is the latest buzzword in the fitness industry. Though biologically inaccurate - because unlike the mind, a muscle is capable only of contracting and can't actually be confused - this catch phrase is changing people's minds about the best approach to resistance training. New concussion bill popular with coaches |
It doesn't do anything to help balance the budget, but at least when it comes to safety, Pennsylvania lawmakers are getting things done. Last week, the Pennsylvania House unanimously approved the Safety in Youth Sports Act, which requires that coaches remove student-athletes from play if they demonstrate signs of a concussion and also requires a medical doctor, a physician-designated medical professional or a neuropsychologist approve the athlete's return to play. Concussion research gets nod from athletes |
Health Talk and You Share

Do we have a set point for exercise? |
Does exercising at one point during the day make you less active the rest of the time? The question of whether humans have an innate set point for movement, a so-called activitystat, is of increasing interest and controversy among scientists. One of them is Dr. Terence J. Wilkin, a professor of endocrinology at the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth, England, who asked himself that question a few years ago while hoping to learn more about the interplay of activity and childhood obesity. Dancing can help prevent diabetes |
Dancing can help ward off obesity, a key factor in Type 2 diabetes, U.S. scientists say. Busting hip-hop moves across a wooden gym floor, scientists led children through one hour of dancing weekly for one month. Using pedometers, the research team found that the students averaged twice as many steps on days they danced. MORE |

As she sat cross-legged, then legs outstretched, and then cross-legged again in her Weehawken, N.J., residence, Ivy Epstein-Barile recalled how her life was changed forever when she was offered dance as an alternative to her elementary school gym class. Epstein-Barile, a professional dancer and local substitute and student teacher, believes in the transformative powers of dance. MORE |
All work and no play: Why your kids are more anxious, depressed |
What are your memories of playing as a child? Some of us will remember hide and seek, house, tag and red rover red rover. Others may recall arguing about rules in kickball or stick ball or taking turns at jump rope or creating imaginary worlds with our dolls, building forts, putting on plays or dressing-up. From long summer days to a few precious after-school hours, kid-organized play may have filled much of your free time. But what about your children? Are their opportunities for play the same as yours were? Most likely not. MORE |

Help Keep PEP ALIVE! |
Physical Education IS NOT dodgeball!
We all know what we receive can be taken away so I want to encourage you to keep PEP alive! The Senate is proposing level funding of $78.8 million for the 2012-2013 school year. However, the House is committed to spending cuts and has suggested that PEP is duplicative of other "physical activity" programs.
Congress needs to understand that PEP is not dodgeball and regular physical activity is no substitute for quality physical education! Please CLICK HERE and send a letter to Congress requesting continued funding of PEP.
SPARK Principal Dr. Thom McKenzie says, "If exercise is medicine, physical education is the pill not taken." Let's keep PEP healthy so we can keep our youth healthy too. Thanks in advance for your support.

Stay in the KNOW...
A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! The bill would also create a block grant to support local education programming, including those that promote healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness. Check the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center regularly for updates!
We urgently need your help! Over the past two years members from our coalition of organizations have worked diligently to have Physical Education and Health Education included as core subjects in ESEA. Last year we were thrilled to work with Senator Udall's (NM) office on the introduction of the PHYSICAL Act and were equally excited when Senator Bingaman (NM) joined him as a co-sponsor. In September, Republican Senator Burr included PE as a core subject in his education bill. HELP Committee Chairman, Tom Harkin is ready to introduce his ESEA bill and has scheduled a Committee meeting on October 18th or 19th to vote on the bill. In an effort to ensure that HE and PE are ultimately included in ESEA. We are asking that you once again contact members of the Senate HELP Committee with the following message.
We are requesting that all of our members send this email to Senators Harkin and Enzi.
Thank you!
