The Governor's Education Transformation Task Force, Oct. 17 & 18 |
Please join us in attendance!
The Governor's Education Transformation Task Force will hold two public hearings to solicit input for its review of the state's education regulations and statutes, in conjunction with the release of its initial report on September 12, 2011. All members of the public are welcome to attend.
The Education Transformation Task Force was established by the Governor in April 2011 to address two issues: to review all statutes and regulations that affect public education, and to recommend a new accountability system that grants more autonomy to schools while maintaining strict accountability for student achievement, safety, and fiscal responsibility. Click here to review the Governor's Initial Report of the Task Force.
In accordance with Executive Order 58, the Task Force will hold hearings to obtain comments from the public on the Initial Report. Additionally, the Task Force is seeking input from individuals and organizations on regulations and statutes that have been placed on school districts and educational providers that substantially impede creativity and innovation in achieving educational, operational or fiscal effectiveness. The Task Force also welcomes input on a next-generation accountability system for districts and schools that demands results while encouraging innovative approaches to improving student learning. The hearings are scheduled for:
*Monday, October 17, 4:00pm, Civic Hall, Connector Building, CamdenCommunity College, Blackwood, NJ
*Tuesday, October 18, 3:30pm, Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre, BergenCommunity College, Paramus, NJ.
Suggestions and thoughts may also be provided to the Task Force via email (regreform@doe.state.nj.us) or postal mail (Education Transformation Task Force, c/o Department of Education, 100 Riverview Plaza, PO Box 500, Trenton, NJ 08625). |

Research shows schools need to take comprehensive approach to increasing physical activity levels of students and staff
|
New Survey Released by AAHPERD
RESTON, VA, October 12, 2011 - While schools have the opportunity to help students meet the national guidelines to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, a new survey released today by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) found that only 16% of elementary schools, 13% of middle schools and 6% of high schools are currently providing physical activity before, during, and after school - components of a comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP).
A CSPAP, which consists of physical education, physical activity during school, physical activity before and after school, staff involvement, and family and community involvement, is a model for school districts and schools to provide a variety of opportunities for school-based physical activity to develop physically educated students. Stay in the KNOW...
A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! The bill would also create a block grant to support local education programming, including those that promote healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness. Check the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center regularly for updates!
We urgently need your help! Over the past two years members from our coalition of organizations have worked diligently to have Physical Education and Health Education included as core subjects in ESEA. Last year we were thrilled to work with Senator Udall's (NM) office on the introduction of the PHYSICAL Act and were equally excited when Senator Bingaman (NM) joined him as a co-sponsor. In September, Republican Senator Burr included PE as a core subject in his education bill. HELP Committee Chairman, Tom Harkin is ready to introduce his ESEA bill and has scheduled a Committee meeting on October 18th or 19th to vote on the bill. In an effort to ensure that HE and PE are ultimately included in ESEA. We are asking that you once again contact members of the Senate HELP Committee with the following message.
We are requesting that all of our members send this email to Senators Harkin and Enzi.
Thank you!
