Note from Your President-Elect, Kathy Fritz |  Let's JUMP on board from coast to coast and break a Guinness World Record! California AHPERD and The First Lady will get the nation started breaking the record for the number of jumping jacks completed within a 24 hour period! Help create awareness of the importance of physical activity and join the fun! All you need is a group of people and some energy to do one minute of continuous jumping jacks. Other partners for the event include the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, Jamba Juice, WNBA/NBA, U.S. Men's Water Polo, AAHPERD and other State & Country AAHPERDs, National & California PTA, National Gardening Association, Venus Williams and National Geographic for Kids (among many others). We will be engaging at least 10,000 people in every state and 14 countries worldwide to Jump Jacks for one minute, between 12 Noon PST/3 pm EST October 11, 2011 - 12 Noon PST/3 pm EST October 12, 2011. Whether you organize a large event and invite your local newspaper or you just get your students up for one minute of jumping jacks together, this is our chance to unite and get active together. Presentation Proposals Now Being Accepted NJAHPERD invites you to submit a presentation proposal for the 2012 Annual Convention. The convention will be held at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa on the beachfront in Long Branch, NJ on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, March 4-6, 2012. Convention programming is based primarily on this annual "Call for Progarms" bringing practical and relevant information to HPERD professionals and students. By featuring you and your peers as presenters, NJAHPERD provides convention attendees with the strongest forum for information exchange, problem solving, and networking on the state level. MORE |

Camden City Board of Education A Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) has been awarded to Camden City Board of Education. Congratulations! Funding is intended to assist the district to initiate, expand, or enhance physical education and nutrition education programs, including after-school programs, for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Camden has been awarded $388,000. The Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools, which manages PEP, supports efforts to create safe schools, ensure the health and well being of students, teach students good citizenship and character, respond to crises, and prevent drug and alcohol abuse. Our profession will never be considered an academic subject or gain the respect it deserves with the public and decision makers without improvement in our programs. |  ClassDojo A new Web and mobile app is aimed at helping teachers track and manage students' behavior in the classroom. The app, ClassDojo, allows teachers to note positive and negative student behaviors on a scale of -1 to +1 and generate reports for individual students or an entire class. Unfortunately, female athletes who participate in soccer and other competitive sports have been shown in several studies to be two to eight times more likely than their male counterparts to suffer an injury to the anterior cruciate ligaments of the knee. The ACL is one of the four main ligaments in the knee. Ligaments are stringy bands of tissue that connect bone to bone and provide integrity and stability to joints. MORE |
|  The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Share    Last year Fort Middle School in Georgia implemented a program called Fighting Obesity Through Ballet. Although current ballet and drama teacher Tamela Thompson wants to keep the program going this year. Thompson said many of the students who participated last year showed an increase in discipline and confidence. Thompson is currently writing a grant application to support a second year of the program, which pairs elementary school children with Fort Middle School eighth grade ballet students. The eighth graders will teach the younger students about health, nutrition, ballet and how to combat childhood obesity. MORE |

Just in time for the new school year, the Office of Special Education Programs in the U.S. Department of Education has issued an important policy clarification document that will have positive impacts on physical education programming for students with disabilities. "Creating Equal Opportunities for Children and Youth to Participate in Physical Education and Extracurricular Athletics" is an official initial response by the Department to the June 2010 U.S. Government Accountability Office report that found "despite legislation obligating states and schools to provide equal access, opportunities for physical activity are limited for children and youth with disabilities." Elementary school students at more than 4,200 schools in almost 600 school districts across the country will be introduced to the game of golf along with character education this year. It will be taught in regular physical education classes using The First Tee National School Program curriculum. A new bill is being introduced called the Empowering Local Educational Decision Making Act of 2011, which would expand the definition of core academic subjects to include physical education! Scholarships will be awarded to three undergraduate and two graduate students in January 2012 and presented at the 2012 AAHPERD National Convention & Exposition in Boston, MA. Learning about the process of growing food helps children develop a deep understanding of the connection between healthy eating and a healthy body.
