My Serve! A Message from the Executive Director...

Jackie Malaska2Even after 4 years of "retirement," the start of a new school year brings mixed emotions. The summer always goes too fast, early morning walks on the beach become less frequent and my flip flops are reluctanly replaced with sneakers! On the more positive side, my varsity coaching season begins with a group of enthusiastic tennis players eager to showcase their skills. The NJAHPERD office phone and email return to "school mode" with professionals seeking answers and guidance and registrations for our professional development events are coming in fast and furious! Good things are happening!

Here is a partial list of  NJAHPERD projects and collaborations to keep the excitement of the new school year going.

Our participation in ShapingNJ, the state partnership focusing on environmental and policy change for physical activity and nutrition has resulted in collaborations with organizations who share our mission to improve health and physical education programs. Through this partnership, we have increased public awareness of the Association and our related issues.

Fitnessgram is being incorporated into more schools than ever and our members are participating in trainings for test administration and software. Our collaboration with NFL Play60 (Giants, Jets and Eagles) has awarded 60 school site licenses and Fitnessgram trainings!

The Teen Driver Safety Coalition is making great progress to disseminate the new GDL information to parents, students and driver education teachers to help lower car crashes involving probationary drivers.

The NJ Principals and Supervisors Association has provided building administrators with information regarding quality health and physical education programs, the importance of professional development, and promoting membership in NJAHPERD on our behalf.

Our Grants & Research Committee is aggressively seeking funding to provide our members with new resources. Our Advocacy Committee is committed to providing our members with position papers and tool kits to promote quality programs.

The NJDOE's Coordinated School Health Project continues to provide support for professional development and we are collaborating to schedule pre convention offerings.
The AHA Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart Coordinators had yet another successful year educating our students in heart health and raising funds for research and education.

This has probably been one of the most challenging starts to a new school year for many of our NJAHPERD members, but I have complete confidence that we will weather any "storm" to provide the best programs for our students.

Warmest regards,

Jackie Malaska

Presidential Proclamation - National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, September 2011
The White House
The White House Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since the 1970s, the rate of childhood obesity in our country has tripled, and today a third of American children are overweight or obese. This dramatic rise threatens to have far-reaching, long-term effects on our children's health, livelihoods and futures. Without major changes, a third of children born in the year 2000 will develop Type 2 diabetes during their lifetimes and many others will face obesity related problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and asthma. As a nation, our greatest responsibility is to ensure the well-being of our children. By taking action to address the issue of childhood obesity, we can help America's next generation reach their full potential. MORE

Lake Conference for K-8 Physical Education

September 30-October 2, 2011

Come spend the weekend with professionals who share your passion for elementary physical education, camping and the great outdoors!

Here's what some past attendees had to say...

"My name is Jean Blaydes, PE teacher from Murphy Texas. In September, 2001 I was beyond blessed to attend and present at the LAKE conference in New Jersey. It remains to this day the most memorable presentation I have ever participated in. It changed my life. You see, the people there had just witnessed and were still living September 11, 2001. Their amazing resilience, love for country, resolve for strength and love for kids inspires me even now. I will never forget. We should never forget the power of what we believe: in the health and learning of the kids we teach. Kids are #1!"

"
All of the presentations were fantastic. Sometimes it's hard to try to figure out how I can use what I've learned at PE workshops with my special kids, but this isn't true of the Lake. I will be using all the activities - they are all very adaptable and I can't wait to teach them."

"This past year has been a difficult one for numerous reasons. Thanks for giving me back the spark to do what I need to do. "Keeping Children First"!  Also for reminding my that we all can make a difference every day!"

"Once again THANK YOU!!!! Lake is the best - I will be back next year!" Diane Glover Lake 2010 Rookie of the Year.

"The Lake Conference is not just a fun and innovative PE weekend--every year I feel renewed in the same way I might from going back to summer camp, or being on a spiritual retreat. I not only gain ideas to stay at the top of my game in a competitive job market, but the Lake Conference has provided me with irreplaceable friends and mentors in the field. I say this with all sincerity, it would be hard to survive my school year and career without the Lake Conference." Meg Waldron Lake Conference attendee since 2005.

Teachers around the world are gearing up for the new school year -- but the experience is going to be vastly different for new teachers. The 10 ways to start a wellness revolution in American schools
"Father of the New PE" outlined why exercise should be the foundation of education
"The research on exercise's positive impact not only on health-which is big enough in this era of childhood obesity-but on learning readiness, as well as behavior and mood, means PE needs to be the foundation of the whole education process," said Lawler, who passed away in 2010. Game Changer: Phil Lawler's Crusade to Help Children by Improving Physical Education (see book in RESOURCES below) pays tribute to his wellness-based approach to PE that energized a revolution in the world of education. To advance this movement faster, the book pinpoints 10 key factors that represent Lawler's approach to transforming education through fitness-based PE and movement-based learning. MORE
Should physical educators be held responsible if out-of-shape children don't show improvement?

Virginia Beach gym teachers may be on the spot

Gym teacher accountability is one of several suggestions gaining momentum across the country as schools deal with increasingly overweight students. Many divisions have begun tracking weight and fitness in an attempt to improve student health. But they're running into ethical questions about what to do with the data and with whom to share it.

In May, the White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity recommended that schools begin measuring student fitness and tailoring lessons and activities to make improvements. MORE

Phys Ed in Schools Has Changed With the Times
Kids playing small sided soccer
The Ledger
There was a time when gym class was forgotten once it was over. Kids weren't taught to take the long view of lifetime fitness. In high schools and some middle school physical education classes, girls wore loose, bloomerlike uniforms and guys donned short shorts and long socks. How they dress isn't all that's changed.

Plenty of research has gone into the P.E. curriculum. In today's classes, not only are rules and skills taught for particular sports, but overall fitness and wellness are even more important. "The biggest evolution has been that we went from skills-based, sports-based (P.E.) to emphasis in lifetime fitness and wellness," said Kathleen Wright, physical education coordinator for Polk County schools. The Impact of Athletics on Academics

SEEN Magazine Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One issue that typically arises during the "let's increase physical education/PA time" discussion is what curricular content to minimize so this can happen. Proponents of the "core" subjects have used the scare tactic that students' academic test scores will decrease if classroom time is reduced to maintain or add physical education to the curriculum. While this misdirection was initially effective, empirical research has refuted that assertion, as shown in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's summary of 50 studies addressed in 43 research articles spanning nearly 20 years. The evidence supports the link between PA and academics as positive and one that benefits students in myriad ways beyond academics. MORE

Student Perceptions of Fitness and Their Physical Experiences
How to Get Students More Active During and After School
How can we get students to be more physically active both during and outside of the school day? Not surprisingly, how students feel about their physical education class experience likely effects their motivation to be physically active out of school. AuthorCharity Bryan describes a study she conducted with middle school students that examined their fitness level, physical education class experience, and physical activity level. It became clear that student attitudes toward physical education were the result of the connection they made with the teacher, and the types of activities they experienced. It was also discovered that students frequently misperceive their own fitness levels. MORE

Help PE & HE Curricula Get Flexible $$$$

NJAHPERD has signed on to a formal letter through AAHPERD, urging the US House Education and the Workforce Committee to support physical education and health education within ESEA. If you've been following the developments, you will know that, as part of its reauthorization of ESEA, the Committee first passed an "efficiency" bill, which eliminated PEP, and then approved a bill that purports to provide great flexibility to states and districts in how they spend their federal ESEA funds. However, those funds may only be spent on programs authorized within ESEA, according to the "core subjects" definition. Since physical education and health education are not included in that definition, states and district may still not use their "flexible" dollars on these subjects.

This letter will be sent on September 12 to Congressmen Kline and Miller, the leaders of the House Education and the Workforce Committee and Congressmen Hunter and Kildee, the leaders of the Subcommittee with jurisdiction over ESEA.
