A Message for Your President...Welcome Back!
Franny Kreisberg
Change Happens!
I hope your summer was terrific! Instead of thinking of it as 'too short', consider it a power nap...another exciting school year is here!

I spent a good deal of those very warm, pleasurable days in N.H. at a co-ed camp for diabetic children. Diabetes changes lives forever. I was inspired by the staff's dedication and commitment and moved every minute of each day by campers finding the courage to overcome their fears learning to manage and enthusiastically live their lives, on purpose, despite or in spite of this disease.

CHANGE happens. These children had no choice, blind-sided by this major, life- altering change. However, with their positive choices, guidance, support and a bit of creativity they move forward.

So will we. We know this year will be full of change. CHANGE...used to stress me out. How about you? No more though. Here are 3 tips I found beneficial to embrace it:

1. Read this short, lighthearted parable about change - "Who Moved My Cheese", by Spencer Johnson. Which mouse are you?

2. L.I.S.T.E.N.:

    • Learn - constantly. Professional development, networking. Stay on top of your game. See tip # 3.
    • Inspire - or be inspired. Find those students that have stories of courage. For some, just getting to school daily may be one of them.
    • Share -your passion and enthusiasm about our profession. If you have lost or found either one, see tip # 3.
    • Teach - Quality P.E. counts. Engineer successful classrooms. See tip # 3.
    • Entertain- while we educate...Keep it fun. See tip #3.
    • Never give up - find a way to make "it" happen. Create raving fans. See tip # 3.

3. NJAHPERD - get involved, get a colleague involved.

Years ago, I turned to NJAHPERD for professional nourishment. I was hungry for ideas and support. What I received in return has been so much more both personally and professionally.

In the trenches, change will happen. "Old dogs" and new, may not want to learn new tricks, but to succeed today, we will have to. Teacher effectiveness for example. Inquiring minds want to know, "Are your students learning and what do you have to show for it?" If you're stumped, get involved, take advantage of NJAHPERD'S many resources. Check our website under professional development, attend the Convention. We collaborate with state and national agencies, offer grants, advocate for our profession and more. While we are in front of our students, tremendous efforts occur behind the scenes supporting us in what we do best.

Like the campers I spent my summer with, we may not always have a choice as to what happens to us, however, we CAN respond positively to the changes. Be prepared, know what's coming down the pike, get involved. It's even more fun with a friend.

Wishing you the best!

Franny Kreisberg

We Need YOU!
Do you have colleagues who need a "nudge" to become more involved in the profession? Do they need to be updated on current best practices? Please do your part to discuss the value of membership in NJAHPERD and AAHPERD with your administrators and colleagues.

The following documents may help you with talking points. Please distribute to colleagues and your building administrator/supervisor. There are 7000 Health & Physical educators in the state that are not members of their professional organization. We need all to be current in the profession.

NJQSAC (Quality Single Accountability Continuum)
There's Still Time to Submit Testimony!
NJAHPERD offered testimony at the NJ State Board of Education meeting on August 3, 2011 regarding the Governor's Task Force proposed recommendations to relax monitoring of Health & Physical Education and other selected subject areas.NJQSAC (Quality Single Accountability Continuum) is the Department of Education's monitoring and evaluation system for public school districts.

We urged our members to submit written testimony to the NJ State Board of Education and express the concern that Health and Physical Education programs must be monitored by the state to assure compliance and accountability.

We had some impact! The State Board of Ed decided to postpone their vote and will now vote on these recommendations at the September 7th meeting. NJAHPERD Advocacy Committee will continue to monitor and will be in attendance at the September 7th meeting. More information is available on the NJAHPERD website.

Study: Milk Better Than Water to Rehydrate Kids

Science Daily Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Active children need to be watered with milk. It's a more effective way of countering dehydration than a sports drink or water itself, say researchers at McMaster University. For Better Grades, Try Gym Class
Phys Ed Class
New York Times, August 27, 2011
If you want a young person to focus intently in school and perform well on tests, should you first send him or her to gym class? That question, which has particular relevance for school districts weighing whether to reduce or ax their physical education programs to save money, motivated a number of stimulating new examinations into the interplay of activity and attention. Some of the experiments studied children; others looked at laboratory rats bred to have an animal version of attention deficit disorder. For both groups, exercise significantly affected their ability to concentrate, although some activities seemed to be better than others at sharpening attention. Read more...

Help PE & HE Curricula Get Flexible $$$$

NJAHPERD has signed on to a formal letter through AAHPERD, urging the US House Education and the Workforce Committee to support physical education and health education within ESEA. If you've been following the developments, you will know that, as part of its reauthorization of ESEA, the Committee first passed an "efficiency" bill, which eliminated PEP, and then approved a bill that purports to provide great flexibility to states and districts in how they spend their federal ESEA funds. However, those funds may only be spent on programs authorized within ESEA, according to the "core subjects" definition. Since physical education and health education are not included in that definition, states and district may still not use their "flexible" dollars on these subjects.

This letter will be sent on September 12 to Congressmen Kline and Miller, the leaders of the House Education and the Workforce Committee and Congressmen Hunter and Kildee, the leaders of the Subcommittee with jurisdiction over ESEA.

NJAHPERD can show support by responding to the action alert on the AAHPERD Legislative Action Center. Link  http://www.aahperd.org/whatwedo/advocacy/
