Crossroad News
September 2012
From Sarah - a Crossroad Patient

"I'm alive because of Crossroad."

I'm deathly allergic to insects. They bite me, and I can have an anaphylaxis reaction. This means my throat swells shut, I can't breathe, and my heart doesn't work right. It can happen in a matter of minutes. Crossroad provides my EpiPens to me at a much lower cost than I can get them anywhere else. Last year, I was in an area in rural KY and was stung by something. In about a minute, my throat was swelling shut, and in less than three minutes I'd lost consciousness. My 14 year old son used the first of 2 EpiPen's, and called 911 only to discover that help would be about 30 minutes in coming. When the fire department arrived, they gave me my second and last dose of Epinephrine from a 2nd EpiPen, and then all they could do was make sure I was breathing, which I was because of the life giving medication I'd had in my purse. The only reason I had it was because Crossroad had made it available to me. Without it, my son would have watched me die because the ambulance with the drug on board took over 20 minutes to make it to us. Crossroad helps me to be a better parent and wife because I have access to care that keeps me healthy and thriving, and giving back to my community. I'm alive because of an EpiPen that I received at discounted cost at the Crossroad's pharmacy. Without it, I wouldn't be writing this letter to you.

Julie Schubert - 2012 Health Center Hero Julie Schubert

Julie Schubert was named a 2012 Health Center Hero by the Ohio Association of Community Health Centers. For almost 30 years, Julie has selflessly dedicated herself to Crossroad Health Center and our patients. Not only is Julie Crossroad's hero, Julie is Crossroad's angel.

Julie has continuously volunteered countless hours at Crossroad as a registered nurse, providing compassionate care to children and their families. Julie helped to start the Climb for Crossroad and has played a major role in executing it each year. Julie serves as a mentor to new staff, students and volunteers. Also, she readily opens up her home and hosts staff functions, whether it is the holiday party, a baby shower, or a retirement party. "Julie is always quick to jump in and help with whatever is needed to get done no matter how minor or how unpleasant the task might be," says Sally Stewart, Crossroad's CEO.

Thank you Julie for your dedication to Crossroad and our patients.
