Perspectives:
Celebrating Community Transformation

Sheree Vodicka

This month, AHA celebrates its 5th year working to make Wake County a place where healthy eating and active living are the way of life.

In working on the Community Transformation Grant application recently, I had some AHA moments about our partner organizations' role, and AHA's role in transforming our community.

Workshops for Parents & Teachers:
2012-2013 Series Schedule

Brains and Bodies WorkshopAHA continues its free Brains and Bodies Workshop series for parents, teachers and school administrators who are working to make schools a healthier place to be.

Join us Sept. 13, 10 am-12 pm as we kick off this year's series with Creating Healthier Schools: Forming a High-functioning Wellness Committee at the NCPTA Building on Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh.

Learn why wellness committees are important, how to form one, who should be involved and what your committee can do to make the school a healthier environment for students, staff and families.

Panelists will include wellness committee members from Brains and Bodies Award-winning schools; join us to hear about their successes and challenges and how they are making an impact at their school!

Workshops are free but pre-registration is required as space is limited. Register now to attend.

Additional Workshops

Other workshops coming up this school year include:

  • Show Me the Money: Grant Writing for Schools (Oct. 29)
  • Destination School: Starting a Safe Routes 2 School Program (Jan. 10)
  • Get Moving: Physical Activity Rocks! (March 19)

Save the dates, check out the School Health tab on AHA's site for more details and resources for schools from past workshops.

Schools as the Heart of Health

According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), "Children and teens spend up to half of their waking hours in school and may consume more than half of their daily calories there. This puts schools in a unique position to support students in getting optimum physical activity, eating healthily, and achieving and maintaining a healthy weight-not only in the short term but over their lifetimes."

Learn more about why AHA works to help schools across Wake County from this IOM report, "Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention."

Local Food and Cooking Know-How

In Nikia Pratt's community, fresh affordable produce is hard to find. Even when vegetables are available, she has found it a challenge to prepare them in a healthy way and in a way that her family would like. Nikia's situation is not unique here in Wake County.
