Rutabaga Creations Win Student Judges Over at Lunch In |
| | 18 Seaboard's Chef Jason Smith begins plating his lunch dish. |
The stakes were high as two local top chefs faced each other, ready to battle in the Iron Carrot competition. Who would reign supreme to win the Iron Carrot and bragging rights for winning over 6 student judges and one teacher with the best healthy lunch? What would they prepare in under an hour in the school's kitchen with only an oven and no stovetop? What would the secret ingredient be?
This was the scene on March 31 at Underwood Elementary for Lunch In, the first event in Wake County schools to raise awareness about healthy school lunches and engage the community to advocate for fresh, local foods in schools.
Learn which chef won, why Lunch In matters and how to get fresh, local foods into schools!

National Nutrition Month (March) was an adventurous learning experience for students, staff, and parents at St. Mary Magdalene (STMM) Catholic School in Apex. Coordinated by the school Wellness Committee, the month's highlights included taste tests of 4 colored foods (some may surprise you!) and tips for a kids' workout and a 5K training program in preparation for a 5K run to be held at the school on May 14.
Read about the foods the kids enjoyed, how teachers and parents weaved the healthy living theme into lessons and fun activities, and access resources your school can use!

| Farmers' Markets: Open for the Season |
| | Shop for spring produce at area farmers' markets! | This month marks the opening of many farmers' markets across Wake County, giving you lots of opportunities to buy fresh, local, healthy fruits and veggies, eggs, meats, seafood and much more! Many markets are open for Saturday hours, and several feature an additional weekday market during the summer season.
Print this handy reference listing area markets and post it on your refrigerator or bulletin board!
AHA's web site features a Local Foods tab listing area markets, pick your own farms, and farms offering CSAs. (If you don't know what CSAs are--learn at AHA's web site!)
AHA supports markets and CSAs because increasing access to healthy foods is part of our mission! What better way to eat well and connect with those who grow your food? |
| Trying Different Sports: Consider Camps |
If your child is considering a new sport or trying to figure out which sports are just right for him or her, camps might be the answer. Short-term camps are a great introduction to sports before signing your child up for a full season or session.
Camps are available year-round in throughout Wake County for track-outs and, of course, there are many summer camps. Active Alex, which promotes kids' sports and activities in the Triangle, features a database of an extensive range of sports and activities (from archery to wrestling!), as well as lessons, clinics and camps. |

Local Resources for Healthier Schools |
| | Veggie Sculptures, with foods from The Produce Box, are a fun way to engage kids. |
Many AHA partners and other local business and organizations support schools and youth-serving organizations in different ways!
Think fundraisers, think physical activity programs, think nutrition education, think health fairs, think PTA membership support--think about how you can utilize them at your school!
Check out two handouts from AHA with more information: Local Resources and AHA Partner Resources--most are free or available at a minimal cost. |
