Sport Snack Game Plan

Springs sports are in full swing with weekly games for soccer, baseball, lacrosse and other games being played all over the county!

Sport Snack Game PlanAs parents and coaches, you have a great opportunity to pack healthy snacks and drinks for kids on the field. Download AHA's Sport Snack Game Plan and share it with your team. It takes just a few minutes to slice up some oranges or apples, or other seasonal, local fruit.

Did you know that a 32-ounce bottle of Gatorade has 14 tsp of sugar in it? Why load the kids with sugar after they've spent an hour being physically active? Bring water for the team to quench their thirst.

Also, you may be surprised to learn that the healthier snacks and drinks cost less than snacks often brought to games!

Mom Writes Prescription for School

Hunter Walking Club boys
Some Hunter Elementary Walking Club members have taken to running!

Carrie Dow-Smith is a lot like other mothers across Wake County. She is a busy working mom with three kids at Hunter GT Magnet Elementary in Southeast Raleigh. She's also a pediatrician with WakeMed Faculty Physicians, where many of her patients are obese.

And Dr. Dow-Smith is also an advocate; she has taken steps in recent months to help students at Hunter be more active, eat better and learn more about healthy lifestyles!

Now the school has three new programs in place:  a Walking Club, the Healthy Hunter Challenge, and the Healthy Hunter Cafeteria a la carte options form.

Learn how your school can model these efforts--read the whole article on AHA's web site...

Garden Tool Drive: Donate on March 21!

garden tools photoIs there an old shovel or hoe collecting dust in your garage or shed? Donate it to the AHA Garden Tool Drive on Monday, March 21!

AHA will be outside the main entrance of WakeMed Cary (1900 Kildaire Farm Rd.) from 11 am-1 pm to collect gardening tools in good working order. AHA will then donate tools to community gardens in need!

"Community gardens increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables," commented Laura Aiken, executive director of AHA and Community Health Specialist at WakeMed Health & Hospitals. "But one of the biggest hurdles community gardeners face is funding for all the supplies needed to maintain the gardens. If you've got any spare garden tools, come see us at WakeMed on Monday!"

Go Local!
Representatives from Girls on the Run, The Produce Box and other local organizations will join us to share information on innovative ideas for fundraising, physical activity, healthy eating and program support.

AHA is also compiling a list of local resources (companies that work with schools for flower fundraisers, for example) to share with participants. If you have information about such resources, please contact Michele McKinley.

We know many AHA partners and community members provides resources to schools. If you would like to be included on the resource list, let us know!
