Heritage Greens Summer Junior Tennis Program
| |
GOALS: 1) to provide quality tennis instruction to kids of various ages as one of the many alternatives they have during the summer months. 2) to provide parents an option to get their kids out of the house and turn off video games, at least for an hour per day. 3) to get more kids ready to play Junior Team tennis, as well as to help those already playing Juniors get ready for High School caliber tennis. 4) to provide another avenue for kids to get to know and interact with a different group of kids who live in the same neighborhood but may not know each other. 5) to provide group classes that have a lower student/teacher ratio (max 8 kids per court), compared to other name brand clubs with larger group lessons. 6) to enhance the overall ambiance and quality of life in the neighborhood and to get full utilization out of a sometimes neglected resource. COST: Each session consists of six 1-hour flights as shown below. Cost is $90 per session. Sign up sheets and payment will be due 2 weeks prior to the start of the first session in order to properly establish rosters, create groupings and to put adequate staffing in place. Security Tips
| | Be aware of strange and unfamiliar vehicles that appear to be driving aimlessly through the neighborhood as well as suspicious acting individuals. They could be targeting your street for future burglaries. Here is how it works. You are inside your home, say around 10 am, and you get a knock on the front door. If you are not expecting anyone and don't recognize the person so you ask what they want without opening the door. If you get some bizarre story about a lost dog (from one of your neighbors who doesn't have dogs) or that they need to use the phone, don't open the door. Instead contact the non emergency line of the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office (303-795-4711) and inform them of what just happened. Many times these individuals are casing your home for a front or back door entrance burglary. The worst thing you can do is to not answer the door. The bad guy will assume no one is home and the next noise you hear will be coming from your back door. In that case call 911. Remember a call from your home phone to a 911 operator records your name and location which can be helpful when a emergency is happening. A call from a cell phone will not provide an exact location from where the call was made. More to come next month. Rick Johnson, Security Guy, HG rick@denverpi.com

Recycle Tips
|
| |

Recycle: It's the time of year when you start doing yard work and gathering lots of yard waste. If you can put it directly in your trash can, instead of a plastic bag, it will have a chance to decompose. If you need to bag it, use a paper one that is designed for yard waste. Every year we dispose of 24 million tons of leaves and grass clippings, which could be composted to conserve landfill space. (1996 Environmental Defense Fund)
To avoid plugging up the street's drainage system, sweep dried leaves, pine needles and grass from the street gutters around your house and dispose of them in the appropriate fashion. This will not only allow our streets to drain better, but it's a nice gesture for our neighborhood.
Reuse: We are looking at doing electronic recycling during the first part of August. Check back next month for more details.
Do you know of an organization that is in need of something? If so, we can promote it via the REUSE portion. Just email us at recycle@heritagegreens.org. |

Animals Running at Large
| | |
The following is taken from a letter from an officer for the City of Centennial.
CMC 7-7-410(b) Running at Large "Control means the dog is on leash, cord, or chain not more than ten feet in length held by a person of sufficient age, size and physical ability to restrain the animal."
There is no justification for allowing pets to roam. Animals that are not properly restrained may be responsible for causing injury or death. Free-roaming animals also attach other pet animals and wildlife. In additional, the pet overpopulation problem is directly related to the free roaming of (unaltered) cats and dogs. A free-roaming animal is also exposed to disease from other animals, injury or death from traffic (and wildlife such as coyotes), retaliation by irate property owners, or poisoning from the ingestion of garbage.
We are more than happy to set up increased patrols in areas that citizens see dogs off leash. If there is a specific area please let me know and I will set up some foot patrols immediately.
Officer K. Lantz
City of Centennial

Coyote Breeding Season Can be Dangerous for Pets
| | |
It's breeding season for coyotes and residents are urged to keep a close watch on pets. Coyotes seek mates and breed from January through March making them more prominent and aggressive. Pet owners are encouraged to exercise caution when walking their pets or letting them out in the yard. Small dogs and cats can be an attractive food source for coyotes and other wildlife. Always supervise your pet outside and keep your dog on a short leash while walking. Do not allow pets to roam, especially at night.
When coming in contact with a coyote:
* Do not run away from or turn your back on a coyote; * Shout 'go away' in a loud and authoritative voice at the coyote; * Wave your arms, clap your hands and throw objects in the direction of the coyote to encourage it to move away from you; * Be as big and loud as possible using hazing tools such as whistles, horns, rocks, water guns filled with vinegar, etc.; * Pick up any small pets or children that are with you; * If the coyote does not leave the area, back away slowly while still facing the coyote.
Coyotes and other wildlife fall under jurisdiction of the Colorado Division of Wildlife. For additional information on keep your pets safe from coyotes, visit the Division of Wildlife's website. (great video!)
