GATOR PRE-TEAM: Our first year with the Gator Pre-team was wonderful. What a great way to introduce kids to the sport of swimming. The Gator Pre-team allows an opportunity for kids who are not quite ready for swim competition to develop their swimming skills and participate in the fun of the neighborhood swim team. The goal of the program is to prepare kids to move up to the competition team by the following season or when they are ready. The Pre-team swimmers will enjoy all of the fun of being a Gator, but will participate in customized practices and not be expected to compete in meets. Practices will be offered each weekday, but Pre-team members may opt to attend practice fewer than 5 days per week. To top off their summer we will have a mini swim meet just for the Pre-team. More information will be coming soon. If you have questions or ideas, please contact Amy.

As the season gets closer, please check out the website for the latest information: http://heritagegreens.rmsl.org.

Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids' Cancer

Linn and Aaron

Two years ago our 14-year-old grandson, Aaron Lupo, lost his 2 1/2-year battle with Osteosarcoma, a cancerous (malignant) bone tumor that usually develops during the period of rapid growth that occurs in adolescence, as a teenager matures into an adult.

We are longtime residents of Heritage Greens. Aaron lived with his mother, Linn Lupo, and brother, Joey Lupo, in the Willow Creek neighborhood, and he was diagnosed with cancer just before he entered West Middle School in Greenwood Village. He spent his 12th birthday undergoing his first chemotherapy treatment at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Hospital.

Our daughter, and Aaron's father, Michael Lupo, annually participate in the March 16 St. Baldrick's Day event at the Fado Irish Pub in Denver. They, and brother Joey, will relate Aaron's story about his fight against cancer. At a St. Baldrick's event, young and old, male and female, sit side by side, and face the clippers as part of the worldwide effort of Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids' Cancer. This is the first year that Linn will join Michael in the head shaving event.

We are asking our Heritage Greens neighbors to visit the St. Baldrick's Foundation web site and pledge any amount, large or small, in Linn's name and in Aaron's honor. Money raised by the foundation goes toward childhood cancer research. The web site is www.stbaldricks.org.

Recycle Tips

HG Recycle

Reduce: The Ronald McDonald House receives about a penny a piece for pop tabs. This money is used to help the Ronald McDonald House maintain a facility that helps families that have a sick child in a hospital and are struggling to pay for hotel rooms, or transportation back and forth to the hospitals. Many of these families are from out of town and don't have places to stay. If you would like to help you can collect soda tabs and drop them off on the Bevilacqua's front porch, in a plastic bag, marked RMH. 7759 S. Dexter Court.

Reuse: Think about using a water bottle instead of bottled water because approximately 1.5 million barrels of oil, enough to run 100,000 cars for a whole year, are used to make plastic water bottles, while transporting these bottles burns even more oil.

Recycle: Think about recycling your plastic bags. During 2009's International Coastal Cleanup, the Ocean Conservancy found that plastic bags were the second-most common kind of waste found, at one out of ten items picked up and tallied. Plastic bags also do not biodegrade. Light breaks them down into smaller and smaller particles that contaminate the soil and water and are expensive and difficult to remove. When the small particles get into the water, they are ingested by filter feeding marine animals. Biotoxins that are in the particles are then passed up the food chain, including humans. There is a bin right inside of the King Soopers' door. Just place them in there when you go to the store.

Spring is just around the corner.  If you are starting your spring cleaning, think about donating your items to other causes for someone else to use. "One man's junk is another man's treasure."

Do you have a group that could benefit from our efforts to RRR?  If so, please let us know. recycle@heritagegreens.org.
