October 2011
President's Message

Greetings!

 SIGN

I can't believe I am sitting at the Heritage Greens pool in the warm sun, watching the kiddos swim and writing the October President's letter. How lucky we are to live in HG and Colorado.  By now the pool is closed and I want to thank Jeff Smith for all of his monumental work in keeping the pool area safe, fun and continuously available for all residents and their guests.

Speaking of being outdoors in the warm Colorado weather, I want to remind the tennis players that we will be keeping the "tennis / community area" restrooms open all year. The facilities are heated and will be available for use during the winter months. And remember to continue to do your part in keeping the facilities clean. Trash and recycle will continue to be available at the facilities throughout the winter. We also ask that residents and facility patrons help keep the facility secure by ensuring doors are closed and locked when not in use.

With the autumn season upon us, it is time for the HOA to wind down its big projects and prepare for the 2012 year. The neighborhood is in really good shape both financially and as an entire community. We have spent considerable money this year on the common area and other infrastructure, however, we feel it has been a worthy investment. We have our new common area facility and have upgraded a significant quantity of HOA landscaping and irrigation infrastructure throughout the neighborhood. Good news is that the 2012 HOA Board won't have much to do. I am sure there will be the typical neighbor vs. barking dog issues, unauthorized use of pickup trucks with shotgun toting recruits to track down foxes and rabbits, cars and boats parked in the streets for weeks on end and anonymous letters sent to the HOA Board telling them how controlling they are because they asked someone to cut down a mostly dead tree.  My response to the new Board is, the big stuff is completed, and your work going forward will be easy! On that note, we are looking for many new HOA Board members and committee members to sign up and volunteer for the 2012 year. Please contact me (hoa@heritagegreens.org) or another Board member if you are interested in joining the HOA Board in some faction. We will be putting together a nominating committee in the near future and would love to get your name on the list!

The next HOA Board meeting is scheduled for October 12th, 7p.m. to be held at the Heritage Greens Swim and Tennis Community Room.

Cheers,

Chip Zodrow

Heritage Greens HOA President

Heritage Greens Neighbors Can Support Lenski Elementary Today!

Hey there Heritage Greens Neighbors!  We want to ask for your support of our neighborhood elementary school in two ways by doing what you are already doing!  Check out the two fundraisers below and help support Lois Lenski Elementary today!

Streets of SouthGlenn

Do you shop, eat out, check out books or go to the movies at The Street of SouthGlenn?  Maybe all of the above and then some?  If so, here is what you can do to help.  Lenski is participating in a program called Streetsmarts and Lenski earns five points per dollar spent at all of the shops at SouthGlenn, every store there counts!  This is a competition with 19 other schools to earn the most points and earn $2,500. If you shop at any of the stores at SouthGlenn please hold onto that receipt and do one of two things with it.
  • If you no longer need the receipt you can drop the receipt off in the convenient collection box labeled Lois Lenski Elementary located in the Guest Services lobby (next to the parking garage) or at your fellow Heritage Green residents front step.  Neighborhood drop boxes are on the front steps of Jan McElhiney- 5313 East Otero Drive and Holly Malcolm- 7708 South Cherry Court.
  • If you need to keep the receipt, take the receipt by the Guest Services lobby at The Streets of SouthGlenn where they will log the receipt for Lenski.
This fundraiser includes the SouthGlenn Public Library where we earn 100 points per book checked out! Just turn in your receipt!

To earn 1,000 bonus points you can also sign up for the Street Smarts e-mail by visiting www.shoppingpartnership.com where you will receive exclusive Street Smarts bonus offers.  After you join, you'll receive details to earn an additional 1,000 points.

If you have questions about the Streetsmarts  at The Streets of SouthGlenn program please contact Jan McElhiney at jmcelhiney@ciber.com.

King Soopers

Do you shop at King Soopers?  Then order a RELOADABLE King Soopers card to use for all of your King Soopers purchases.  Lenski directly receives 5% of your purchase total!  You order a card, reload it every time you shop and Lenski gets 5%.  That's all there is to it.  If you would like to support Lenski by doing what you're already doing, please contact your fellow Heritage Green resident, Charity Aslin at charity@ZoomAerialPhotos.com or 303-476-3288.

Thank you for your support of your neighborhood elementary!!

Swimming Pool Update

salamander
Look what we found on the last day the pool was open - a tiger salamander!

Despite all of my efforts, the 2011 swim season has finally drawn to a close. What a year it has been! Thanks to beautiful Colorado weather we were able to eke out an additional 2 weekends at the pool. Overall, even with a few minor hiccups regarding the final phase of construction, our new facility was truly a fantastic place for all of the neighbors to meet and enjoy. It was great to see everyone having fun and gathering at the pool this year. Usage was up substantially, especially after the swim team season, when it usually drops significantly. I really enjoyed seeing all you, new families and old, this summer.

Knock on wood; we made it through another year without any major safety issues. I will remind parents that the new pool design presents an issue. The zero entry drops more than the little ones realize right before they reach the swim lanes. Our life guards had 4 "saves" this year. So please, next year keep a close eye on your kids, especially in that portion of the pool. We will have a permanent guard position there next year. But you know your kids' ability and should be within arm's length of those who have not mastered swimming yet.

The long awaited diving board was finally put in. And from the never ending line it seems to be a hit. I think we have quite a few future stars in the neighborhood! Given the gene pool of parent athletes, I have high hopes for the future divers and swimmers. Speaking of which, a last shout out to Missy Franklin! She was kind enough to spend time with us in August. I hope you took advantage of coming down and talking with her. She is a great person who has done phenomenal things in the world of swimming. Keep it up; we are all rooting for you!

The luau was a smashing success-thanks in part to the mai tais. Thanks again to the social committee for putting on such a fun night. I want to thank everyone who has volunteered to maximize the fun in the place we call home-Heritage Greens. Swim team, the Gator Gallup, Moms-pops and tots, the social committee and the list goes on. I want to especially thank Chip Zodrow and rest of the board for supporting me in running the pool this year.

Lastly, the end is here. Having lived in HG for 6 years, I have managed the pool for five of them. It is time for someone else to continue the Heritage Greens tradition of volunteering and run it for a while. You will have a new facility that is the pride of the neighborhood and the envy of our area to run. Please contact either Chip or me to find out the parameters of this role. Thanks for all the kind words regarding the construction project this year. I think all of the hours were worth it-for everyone.

Tennis Update
tennis fence
Another tennis season is winding down.  We hope everyone has enjoyed the new courts.  At this point everything is complete except  the shade structure, which should be here any day now, so it will be ready for next year!  There is a new lock on the bathroom doors; it is self locking and will require a key to open.  Please do not prop open at anytime, we ask that you use the key, even during matches.  This is a security measure and it is self defeating if it is left propped open.

Please be aware the sign up sheets will only be posted through the end of September since the court usage drops after league is over.

Recycle Quiz Answers - Does it Go in the Bin?

1. Answer: B

This is the #1 worst contaminant in recycling bins. Plastic bags bind up machinery. They get wet and dirty and cannot be recycled. Put your plastic bags in a Plastic Bag specific bin so you can take them to a center for hard-to-recycle materials or participating grocery stores.

2. Answer: A

This is one of the worst contaminants in the recycling bin. Drinking glasses, ceramic dishes, mirrors, light bulbs and window glass have different melting points and chemical compositions than glass bottles and jars so they will ruin new glass bottles. If buyers see just one of these on the top of a load of glass, the entire load could be rejected.

3. Answer: C

Paper towels cannot be recycled the way other paper products can. They are generally already made of recycled paper products, and as the products get reused, the fibers get continuously shorter. Recycling paper towels would also raise concerns of bacteria and food waste, as they are used to clean up messes.

4. Answer: C

To-go coffee cups have plastic liners that are not recyclable.

5. Answer: No.

Do not flatten plastic containers or aluminum cans. The way single-stream recycling works is that automated equipment separates your materials by sorting the flats or 2-dimensional materials (that would be your paper) from the rounds or 3-dimensional materials (that would be your containers). If containers are flat the system recognizes them as paper and sends them to the paper markets. That's bad. This is also the reason you are to ball up aluminum foil - so that it is not flat and 2-dimensional. FYI - You can flatten cardboard.

6. Answer: Yes

Put shredded paper in a paper bag, staple the top, and write: Shredded Paper
