August 2011
President's Message

Greetings!

 SIGN

Happy summer!

I hope you had an opportunity to visit and use the new pool, tennis and volleyball facilities. We are extremely pleased with how everything has turned out. I was looking through some photos of the old pool area and also of the construction last fall and realized how truly amazing it is that we completed this project so quick and with so few stumbles and mistakes. I remember an HOA Board discussion about seven years ago with Mark Thomas, Dave Huter, Mike Ogborn, Tim Antonio, Bill Heisenbuttle and Marty Smith (and a few others); we were all discussing upgrading the pool/tennis area. No way could we ever do this within one year and how could we afford it? What are our options for renting temporary memberships at another pool while the HG pool is closed during construction? Would we ever want permanent grills? Should we rebuild the tennis courts? Should we just perform a temporary facelift? Well, I think the time, design options and discussions that occurred within the HOA during the past seven or eight years has paid off! While everything is not perfect and we have not yet reached all of our goals and milestones it all boils down to "people are swimming and playing tennis" and it appears they are enjoying the new area. The remaining construction tasks such as tree stump removal, tennis wind screens and a few other items will be completed, I assure you... however I am no longer providing any estimated complete dates!

August 6 is the first Heritage Greens e-Recycle event. Very cool and responsible idea indeed! Check out the article below for more details. Also, the neighborhood garage sale is scheduled for the weekend of August 18. Additional details on the weekend events are below.

Keep an eye out for notices and invites for several upcoming social events such as a Luau and a murder mystery dinner to be held at the pool and community room.

The HOA has received numerous requests to rent out the community room. We are nearly ready to start the rental process. We have received HOA Board approval, Metro District approval and respective legal counsel approval on the rules, regulations, membership guidelines, guest use and facility use policies. We are doing our best to meet everyone's needs and requests. This will definitely be a continuously changing process until we get it ironed out. We have several HOA Board members and a new volunteer that will be working on the rental program along with our property management company ACCU providing support.   We will communicate the details of the rental process the moment it is finalized.

Well, I don't have much else to pass along at this point (which is a good thing!) Just the usual... remember school starts soon and please be cautious with your driving habits. Remember to provide your ACC request to ACCU with plenty of advanced notice prior to starting any landscaping, painting or renovations projects. And don't forget to follow up with ACC when you have completed your project(s). Boats, trailers and campers should not be parked at your residence for more than 24 hours. Keep sidewalks clear of overgrown plants and trees, keep basketball hoops off the streets and sidewalks... pick up after your pets ... don't test for gas leaks with a match ... don't run with scissors... and so forth. Keep up the good work... the residents of Heritage Greens do a fantastic job of taking pride in their 'hood.

The next HOA Board meeting is scheduled for August 10th, 7 p.m. to be held at the Heritage Greens Swim and Tennis Community Room.

Cheers,

Chip Zodrow

Electronics Recycling Day

HG Recycle

Saturday, August 6th, from 7 to 11 a.m.

Heritage Greens pool parking lot

We need your help to keep harmful electronic waste out of our landfills.  Electronics contain toxic pollutants such as lead, mercury and cadmium among others. Electronics that are dumped in the trash often end up in landfills, where these substances can leach into the groundwater and soil. Research estimates that electronic waste accounts for 80 percent of American's toxic garbage and is growing exponentially. Join us in making a positive impact by dropping off your unwanted electronics and help keep our community beautiful.

A full list of acceptable electronic items is below. There will be a recycling fee for CRT Monitors and TV's. Checks can be made out to Luminous Recycling. All other acceptable items are free to recycle. Hard drives are destroyed to ensure that Client data is fully protected.

Acceptable Electronics

CPUs, Camcorders, Monitors ($10 per unit), Compact Disc Players, Keyboards, DVD Players, Mice, Electronic Games, Hard Drives, TV's ($20 per unit), Laptops, Radios, Mainframe Computers, Remote Controls, Modems, Tape Players, PDAs, Stereos, Servers, Two-Way Radios, Network Switches, VCRs, Toner Cartridges (Laser/Ink), Handsets, Copiers, Cell Phones, Duplicators, Fax Machines, Electric Typewriters, Pagers, Printers, Answering Machines, Printed Circuit Board, Telephone Systems, Scanners, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Word Processors. Items not listed shall be approved on a case by case basis.

About the recycler: Luminous Recycling will handle the disposition of all classes of materials identified and may remarket and recycle such systems, subsystems, components and materials. Luminous Recycling's goal is to landfill less than 1% of all received material.

Special Thanks to Tim Morton of Luminous Recycling for helping us set this up and Holly Malcolm for sponsoring this event.

Towel Recycling Event

The last weekend the pool is open, we will be taking all of the unclaimed towels and any that you would like to drop off. Please put in a bag, marked "Towel Recycling." We gave over 50 towels to the Denver Rescue Mission from our July 4th collection.  Let's beat that! The DRM uses over a hundred towels a month with its residents.

Swimming Pool Update

poolI can't believe I am writing this already-the last newsletter of the summer! We are coming into the last 5 weeks of using our great new facility. And from what I hear and see, everyone is enjoying it!

For those who are not daily users of the pool, yes the diving board is in and the wait seems to have been worth it. There is a steady line of all ages willing to test their will, balance and bravery all day long. Who knows, we may even have future national champions in the making! Given the popularity of the board, I want to re-iterate:

  1. There is no swimming in the deep end while the board is open.
  2. Please go straight off the board and swim to the side, then exit the pool at the ladders
  3. There is no double bouncing on the board-offenders will be asked to leave.
  4. The life guards are the law at the pool and are to be obeyed. They are only trying to make sure everyone has a safe and fun time while at the pool.

Regarding the outstanding issues around the pool area, we are still working on them-but the list has become very short. I am painfully aware of the swamp over near the deep end and we have filed a claim with the GC to get more effective drainage for that area. Again, I ask for your patience. We are exploring additional/alternative shade structures for the pool. Please be aware that the wind can kick up quickly and create potentially dangerous situations with the umbrellas. If you feel the wind starting to come in, please put them down as quickly as possible and secure the strings around them.

With school just around the corner, I am doing my best to keep the pool open for as many hours during the day as possible. Please keep up to date on the HG website for the hours of operation. Until then, unfortunately, we will be switching to school hours starting August 15th. The pool will open during week days starting at 3:00 pm and go until 8:00 pm. We will have regular hours, 11-8, on both Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.

Lastly, please pass on my gratitude to all of the bike riders for properly storing their rides out of the way of the main entrance. It is great they, and you, are following the rules. Kudos to all of you!

Out of the Darkness

out of the darknessMy name Laurie Freeman and I have been a Heritage Greens resident for 21 years. In the last 15 months I have lost my 19 year old son Chris and my husband Tim to suicide. Suicide and mental illness touches everyone in some way or form. Suicide is a major national health problem that takes an enormous toll on family, friend co-workers and the entire community.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the only non-profit organization exclusively devoted to funding the research, education, and treatment programs needed to prevent suicide

This fall, more than 200 "Out of the Darkness" community walks will take place across the country. By supporting these walks, you will be joining forces with thousands of people nationwide to:

  • Raise mophoenixney to fund AFSP's vital programs to prevent suicide and save lives,
  • Increase national awareness about depression and suicide
  • Help create an AFSP presence throughout the country

I am walking to raise awareness of mental illness and suicide. I am a member of Team Freebirds - In Memory of Chris and Tim Freeman. My personal fundraising goal is $5000. I am asking everyone I can to support this worthwhile cause. Please consider making a donation in my name at www.OutOfTheDarkness.org or  by sending a donation by mail. I am chairing the committee for the Out of the Darkness Walk for Food and Drink. I am in need of donations in kind of water, power drinks, snacks etc.

The support that I have received from family, friends, support groups and strangers in the last year is the reason why I want to give back and to dedicate my time to helping others with this issue. If I can help just one person, it will be a worthwhile journey.

The South Metro Out of the Darkness Walk is on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Highlands Ranch High School. Our goal is to have 1000 participants and raise $100,000.

Please consider donating to this worthy cause. If you have any questions, please contact me, Laurie Freeman at 720-841-4137 or @ tljcfreeman@live.com.

Thank you.

Gators Swim Team Wraps Up the Season

6

Coach Kayla with 6 & Under Boys

Another exciting Gator swim season has come to a close.  It was an amazing summer.  Our kids worked so hard and improved so much.  The grown-ups also worked very hard and had a blast coming together as a community and cheering on our Gators.

As always, our Gators did very well at Prelims and Finals.  There were many stellar individual and relay performances across all the age groups and we are all very proud that Heritage Greens took 3rd place overall in our division.  Our young boys, the future of our team, did especially well this season. The 6 & Under Boys and the 7-8 Boys both brought home the championship trophies!

7

Coach Jasmine with 7-8 Boys

Our coaches did a great job this summer.  They gave their heart and soul and A LOT of time and we all really appreciate their efforts.  They are all returning to school or heading off to college for the first time.  We all thank Brittany, Chad, Cate, Jasmine and Kayla so much for their efforts at the pool and for the example they set for our HG kids.  Even though they worked very hard, our coaches also had lots of fun - check out the photo of the Barbie & Ken costumes for Finals.ken

And finally, a very special "Thank You" goes out to Debbie Lepetsos who has worked tirelessly on behalf of the HG swim team for the past two years.  She has given so much to the team and her leadership has been so valuable.  She will be missed, but we know she will continue to be there to cheer on our Gators.  Sue Carothers has graciously stepped up to fill Debbie's shoes and she will do a great job.

More Gator News to come in 2012!  We hope to see all of our Gators back in the pool next year.

Moms, Pops & Tots
girlJoin us Thursday, August 4, at 11 a.m. at the heritage greens pool.  Let's bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it.

Friday, August 19 we will meet at Westlands Park at 10:00 by the fountains.  The 19th is the first day of school for kindergartners this year.  They will only be at school from about 9-10 am. Hopefully some fellow kindergartners will join us at the park and everyone can help them celebrate their first day with this milestone!  Bring bathing suits and towels.

Tennis Courts are Shaping Up
tennis fenceMuch of the tennis equipment we have been waiting for is here. The weighted court dividers are now in place and the cabanas have been stabilized.

A big thank you to HG resident Loren Van Essen of Van Essen Homes (see ad) for designing and constructing the new tennis benches. What an improvement!

New wind screens have been ordered through the Metro District and a backboard through the HOA. The board is to be installed on the south end of Court #1. Scorekeepers are still on back order. The projected completion date for these projects is August.

There are several panels of old wind screens in the seating area adjacent to Court 3. If anyone has a use for them, feel free to haul them away.

What's up with all the Martys?
There are two Martys involved in our HG tennis program.
  • Marty O'Brien handles the facility - anything to do with court maintenance.
  • Marty Smith is our league coordinator - any questions regarding leagues, court scheduling and reservations.
Get your tennis key if you haven't already. The first key is free and additional keys are $5 each.  At this time there is a limit of 2 keys per household. The key will access the tennis courts, the tennis court bathrooms and the padlocks on the gates on the east side of courts #2 and #4.  Contact Marty Smith,  mlsmiff@msn.com, 303-507-9605 or Marty OBrien, meob44@yahoo.com, 303-773-2394.

Drop It, Lock It, Stop It

hosueThe Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office program entitled Drop It, Lock It, Stop It has our deputies always on the look out for open, unattended, garages. If a deputy spots an open garage door the Sheriff's Office mails out a letter to the homeowner about the safety concern (approximately 1,200 each year).

When the program began in early 2004, 30 percent of all residential burglaries in Centennial and Arapahoe County occur through open garage doors; for the first six months of 2011 that figure is down to 11 percent. "During the summer months we typically see a rise in this type of burglary" said Sheriff Robinson, "it takes less than a minute for someone to re- move items of value from an open garage and get away."

An open garage door is an invitation to criminals. To help reduce your potential for victimization follow these easy steps: DROP IT - Dropping your garage door is the first line of defense against un- wanted entry into your home; LOCK IT - Locking the door that leads from your garage into your home reduces unwanted entry. Doors should be equipped with one-inch deadbolt locks and the strike plates need to be reinforced with screws that go into the door frame; and STOP IT - Don't make crime easy; it only takes a minute to secure your home.

For more information on Crime Prevention please contact the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Community Resource Unit at 720-874-3750 or 720-874-4040.
