June 2011
President's Message

Greetings!

 SIGN

I hope you have had an opportunity to visit your new pool and tennis facility.  With any luck the weather will warm up a bit more and we can begin to use the facilities on a more regular basis.  As we have been communicating over the past month, the project is not quite completed.  In fact, we only obtained our Certificate of Occupancy (CO) today as I write this letter!  The Southeast Metro Storm Water Association (SEMSWA) apparently had some internal conflict with the outdoor showers we proposed at the very beginning of the project and of which they originally approved.  Hummmm... not gonna inquire anymore!  Our three week delay is now resolved with a little sign posted next to the showers asking you to not use soap, detergent, bleach and other outdoor pool shower chemicals that we all regularly use outdoors and that may be flushed down the street gutters (along with the fertilizer from your lawn, engine oil and other muck that is already there!)  Again, not gonna inquire anymore!

As I was saying, the pool and tennis facilities are now open and available for use.  Pool hours are 11 am until 8 pm.  We hope to keep the pool open until 9 pm on a few select nights when we can coordinate a "HG Family Night" at the pool.  Keep an eye out for additional communication on these special events.

There are still some remaining tasks to be completed at the facility as part of the final punch list turn-over.  Most notably to residents are the landscaping issues, the tennis keys and the missing diving board.  We are negotiating final repair of the landscaping and the diving board parts are still on back-order.  Sorry, but as of now, we do not have an ETA on the arrival of the parts.  The tennis keys should be turned over to us any day and the tennis coordinators will distribute.  Additionally, you may notice supplementary landscaping work occurring, the modification of fences and gates and installation of an additional pool gate.  The tennis courts are also waiting on installation of supplementary accessories.

The rules, regulations, membership guidelines, guest use and facility use plans are being reviewed and vetted by our insurance agents, the Metro District Board, their legal counsel and our legal counsel.  We will communicate this information the moment it is all approved and published.  A couple of items that are finalized and need to be clarified:  the facility is "called" the Heritage Greens Swim and Tennis Facility (HGS&TF ) and all homeowners of real property in Heritage Greens that are in good standing with their local taxes and HOA dues are automatically "members" of the facility.  Renters of residences within Heritage Greens are also automatically "members" of the facility.  As you may recall, because of our means of project financing we do have to open the facility to the general public but it is only available on a paid membership basis (such as South Suburban Parks and Rec. is).  A non-HG homeowner can join the HGS&TF for $2000 on an annual basis.  Please note we will be authenticating membership of all users of the facility and may ask for rental agreements or other forms of evidence.  Hopefully we will not encounter a significant issue with non-members finding their way into the facilities.  You, as a resident of the neighborhood, must help us police the use and mis-use of the facilities.

Please give an extra special "thank you" to the Heritage Greens Metro District, the Heritage Greens HOA Board (and previous Board Members) and to the construction management and crews.  The teams have worked quite well together and have been able to deliver a fantastic product on time and on budget.  You would be amazed at how much coordination and effort has gone into this project - especially in these final two months!

Now that school is out please remember there are many kids outside playing, riding bikes and walking dogs.  Please watch your speed and remind your teenage drivers about driving habits in our community.

Hard to believe it but it is almost time for the 4th of July celebration.  We are always looking for volunteers for this colossal event.  And for new residents, this is a great way to meet your neighbors and check out the tennis and pool areas!

The next HOA Board meeting is scheduled for June 8th, 7p.m. to be held at the Heritage Greens Swim & Tennis community room.

Sincerely,

Chip Zodrow

Heritage Greens HOA President

The Pool is Open!

poolSummer is here and so is our new pool!  I know it seems like a long time coming for some, but hopefully all of you can appreciate how fortunate we are to have the facility open and operational in just eight short months. I want to personally thank Milender White Construction, the board of the Metropolitan District, those neighbors who live adjacent to the common area, and my fellow Heritage Greens board members. The project would not have been possible without this team. Please take the time to thank them when you see them too.

Rainy, chilly weather made the official opening of the new pool a bit challenging. Even so, we went ahead with the "open house" Saturday, May 14, and the Heritage Greens Gator swim team hosted their first "fun meet". Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we are open for the summer.  Stay informed by checking the Heritage Greens website for news on family nights coming later this summer.

I published the rules for the pool area in last month's newsletter. Other than a few old habits dying hard, everyone is adhering to the rules.  A big thank you!

Once again, Perfect Pools has supplied us with a stellar team of life guards.  They know their jobs and will do their best to keep everyone safe.  Please take the time to introduce yourself and your family members to them.  The familiarity will help create a more cordial environment for everyone.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any ideas to make the summer more enjoyable for everyone.

Swim Team - Get Your Green On!

swimmers

The Gators are off to a great start. Our Fun Meet was held May 21 and it was a great practice opportunity for volunteers, parents and swimmers.  Our gators were very impressive and they hadn't yet had a day of practice in the pool.  Practices are now underway and the team is having fun.  If only we could get a little sun! Please come out to support the team at our upcoming meets.

Heritage Greens will host three home meets this year and our new pool is sure to be the envy of the competition.  The full schedule is posted on the team website, but here are some highlights of our 2011 schedule.

  • June 4  - Away Meet @ The Knolls
  • June 11 - Home Meet vs. Willow Creek II
  • June 11 - 2nd Annual Family Night at the Pool (Kids Movie Night and Adult Wine Tasting)
  • June 15th - Pirates Cove Night
  • June 18 - Home Meet vs. Preserve
  • June 25 - Away Meet @ Forest Park
  • June 27 - Gator Golf Classic
  • July 9 - Home Meet vs. Cherry Knolls
  • July 11 - Prelims Week. HG will host 11-12 Prelims on July 14.
  • July 16 - Finals & Banquet

The Friday Grill is back.  The coaches will have the grill going each Friday starting at 11am.  For a small price you can skip packing lunch that day and enjoy a picnic at the pool.

If you are inspired by our neighborhood kids, you can join in for Masters Swimming.  Starting June 1 Gator coaches Brittany and Chad will be holding early morning swim workouts for the adults.  This is a chance to improve your strokes and conditioning with the convenience of our own pool.  The cost is $5 per day or workout packages are available.  Contact Brittany Biggs (720-308-5145, toughheartswimmer@yahoo.com) or Chad Fesler (303-520-0155, cfesler33@gmail.com).

Go Green! Reduce, Recycle, Reuse.

HG Recycle

REDUCE: As the weather warms up and summer begins the idea of backyard BBQs are on minds of many.  When you are planning yours consider limiting your use of paper products.  Use glass plates and cloth napkins to reduce the amount of trash.

REUSE: Have a lamp that you no longer need?  Think that faux plant gets too dusty?  Before you put it out by the curb on our next trash day please consider if someone else may need/want it.  There are many organizations that can use your old items.  Please try to donate them to these organizations rather then add to the landfill.

RECYCLE: Recycling is a bit confusing.  So many items flow through the typical house each day, what can you put in that yellow lidded bin?  We all know newspapers, bottles, aluminum cans and plastic but did you know the following items can be recycled?  Cereal boxes, paper towel and toilet paper rolls, plastic containers you get berries in from the store, egg cartons, junk mail and more.

Our new pool and tennis facilities are open and wonderful.  Please remember that you can recycle when you are having fun at the pool or on the courts.  Recycling containers are available for your use, please use them!

Have any other ideas for our neighborhood?  Send them to recycle@heritagegreens.org.

Turf Mites May be to Blame for Brown Lawn Patches
turf mites

Is your lawn plagued by patches of straw-colored or silvery dying grass? If so, you are not alone. Many homeowners along the Front Range are seeing their yards awaken to spring, but instead of finding lush, green grass, they are fighting patchy and dying turf.

The damage to the turfgrass may be the result of two pinhead-sized pests: the reddish-brown Clover Mite or the green-colored Banks Grass Mite, according to Arapahoe County's CSU Extension. Turf mites are very small relatives of spiders that thrive by feeding on turfgrasses in warm, dry exposures from January to April.
