Accountability Groups |
An accountability group is a small group who meets regularly to exhort its members to create a life by design instead of living life as it happens. LLab encourages the use of accountability groups. Why?
- They are safe places to reveal dreams, set goals and discuss obstacles.
- They encourage bold moves in the direction of your dreams.
- They help chart paths by regularly reporting progress.
- They issue challenges to consider other options.
- They offer a practice arena to test new concepts and role-play difficult conversations.
- They provide support when mistakes, setbacks or unforeseen circumstances occur, preventing forward movement as planned.
- They are a sounding board to problem-solve current obstacles or brainstorm big ideas.
- Last, they are a checkpoint when life is out of balance, stifled by inertia or jumping ahead without due diligence.
To quote Sun Tzu, "Opportunities multiply as they are seized." Consider an accountability group to help you seize every opportunity to accomplish your dreams.
Travel safely until next time.

Reflections from the current Lab class..
The Leadership Lab class of 2011 has certainly been challenging to the participants. Each month, we push ourselves to learn to be better leaders and prove to ourselves that we can be by the overwhelming amount of participation at each meeting. From the initial teambuilding exercises at the retreat in Bandera to the most recent heartfelt "I believe" essays, this class continues to amaze.
Every carefully-planned class pushes us to be our best and forces us into somewhat uncomfortable situations at times, but by the end of the day everything makes sense. Two recent exercises involved situational leadership and emotional intelligence. I was able to take what I learned back to my workgroup and improve our leadership team in effort to lead and further develop the talented individuals we have.
I'm very glad I chose to participate in this year's Leadership Lab. I have pushed myself to new heights as a leader and made some great friends along the way.

Greetings from Larry Lapaglia and Leadership Lab 2011
Hello Fellow Lab-Rats!
It is almost unbelievable that we are half way through our 2011 Leadership journey! It has been quite an adventure! The involvement, personal and professional growth and engagement from all of the participants have been outstanding and has contributed to making this Lab session one of our most successful!
Session Five of our journey, "Community Leadership," was hosted and sponsored by the City of San Antonio, CPS Energy, elumicor and North Central Baptist Hospital. This session was highlighted by a mock city council meeting in the actual City Council Chambers with theatrical participation by every Lab member. The lessons and experience gained from this activity will serve each of our Lab members extremely well in the years to come as they themselves throw their hats into the political arena.
Session Six, "Leading with Integrity," found our journey taking us to the Westin La Cantera. The Westin hospitality and sponsorship was so incredible that the entire Lab class requested by acclimation that all future Lab sessions be conducted there! The level of service, responsiveness and technical support from the entire Westin staff dramatically reinforced our session topic of Leading with Integrity. The messages communicated during this session by all presenters were extremely beneficial, with the individual reading of "This I Believe" from each Lab member being the emotional and professional highlight.
Now our journey turns toward home. Our next session will cover the incredibly important and volatile topic of "Navigating Change." Of all things in our lives, not withstanding death and taxes, the singular constant is and will always be "change." How we all adapt to change in our personal and professional lives will dictate the level of success we ultimately achieve.
Prepare yourselves and know that no matter what you encounter, personally and professionally, you will always be a "Lab Rat." That resource, that support group, is bequeathed to you to use as you desire.
Be safe and be strong.

Honored Sponsor...
Leadership to me is all about core values and how a person displays them. Honesty, integrity, good work ethic and a strong moral compass are fundamental values of a good leader. Although this sounds like a "No Brainer" to most folks, there are instances when we are all challenged to follow these traits. It is easy to do the right thing when everything is going your way, but as we know, that's not always the case. A true leader makes the right choices and follows his heart (fundamentals) even when it hurts to do so. We must keep in mind that we are all leaders. Some are good leaders and some are not so good. People are constantly watching you. They take note of how you react in good times and bad times. How we act when things are not going our way is the true measuring stick that determines which category we fall in.

Greetings from the 2011 Leadership Lab Alumni Board
Alumni Association:
The fall season is fast approaching and the cooler weather is just around the corner. We have already accomplished many successful alumni events and look forward to celebrating the end of another great year for the LLab program in just a few months.
But if you think we are done for the year, think again! We still have several North Chamber events to attend at discounted prices as well as a few more alumni events for the remainder of the year. In fact, the LLab Alumni Board is excited to offer an educational event on October 21 that will take you back to the emotions and challenges you experienced at retreat. Take a look at our other upcoming events and put them on your calendar. We look forward to your participation!
On another note, I was recently preparing for the LLab Alumni Board presentation to the current 2011 class and I couldn't help but reflect on our alumni mission and purpose. I am very pleased to say that this year's LLab Alumni Board has done an excellent job in planning events that stay true to our mission and purpose. If you need a reminder of what the Alumni Association represents I've included our mission below. I encourage you to get involved this year and the years to come.
