Reflections from 2011 Retreat...
When I think about our time at the Leadership Lab retreat, there are three things that will stay with me.
First is values - I need to take personal time for self analysis to think deeply about my personal values, write them down, articulate them to someone and analyze how they compare to my company's values. Making time to do this will be difficult and it was nice to have a distraction-free environment at the retreat to start thinking about this.
Second is friendships and fun - being still new to San Antonio, it was refreshing to make new friends in a fun environment. I look forward to developing these friendships through this experience.
Last is trust and perception - how do I instill trust in myself as a leader and how do I improve at trusting others? I need to understand better how my leadership style and tendencies are perceived. How do I learn to adjust my actions and reactions?
I have high expectations for our journey together and look forward to challenging myself and others as we learn together.

Be a part of it.
Leadership Lab is like a fully-escorted tour with each session a destination on our itinerary. At some destinations, we linger. At others, concepts are introduced and revisited later in our travels.
We began our leadership journey on February 9th with our Kickoff Breakfast at the Petroleum Club. Seventy one participants were presented to distinguished guests and sponsors. Our next destination was the Flying "L" Ranch in Bandera for retreat on March 3rd and 4th. Values, DiSC, trust and teambuilding were the focal point. Thank you SWBC for sponsoring the kickoff breakfast and Security Service Federal Credit Union for sponsoring retreat.
The retreat evaluations extol the benefits of dedicated time focusing on values. We often neglect this in our daily life. Alumni, since your graduation from this program, have you pulled out your binder to review your values? Where are you now? What have you achieved toward your 10-year goals? I realized I must make time to keep true to myself, my values and goals. Values and goals are part of us but we must continually reflect, re-evaluate and renew to remain true to our purpose.
With this in mind, I issue you a challenge. Start your day deliberately. Schedule a short meeting with yourself first thing in the morning. Review your values, mission and goals. Review your company's. This helps us stay focused on the big picture while performing the necessary tasks to accomplish our goals.
Remember, days are long, life is short. Live purposefully.
Travel safely and until next time.

Honored Sponsor...
Leadership is not about the position you hold. Successful leaders are very adept at achieving extraordinary results by getting people to exert extraordinary efforts because they want to. In Leadership Lab, we want to change the way you think about leadership. Leadership is everybody's business. Leadership is you!
We need leadership now. Increasingly, as our business cultures adapt to global demands, people must influence without formal authority. We must learn to change our lives and thinking from where we are. We need people of all ages from all backgrounds to take advantage of the myriad of opportunities that exist to make a difference.
We all possess the capacity for leadership, but only those who cultivate it will ever become truly effective leaders. With the resources provided through Leadership Lab, we encourage you to develop the leader in you - to become an active participant in shaping your future and the future of others.
Life doesn't happen to us, it happens through us. Leaders don't have all of the answers, but they know the questions. They create an environment where the questions can be answered.
Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan, once said that the best training a top manager can be engaged in is management by example. Each of you should make sure there is no discrepancy between what you say and what you do. Don't expect people to believe just what you say; have that belief reinforced by what you do.
The world needs you to live up to your potential. Imagine yourself leading. Where is your leadership needed now?

Greetings from the 2011 Leadership Lab Alumni Board
Greetings Leadership Lab Alumni,
We have had an exciting start to a great year for the Alumni Association. First, the Alumni Board had a productive retreat in January at the Haven for Hope volunteer center. Cindy Stynchula facilitated the session and helped the Board begin planning a wide range of alumni events for the year. The Board also volunteered at the Haven for Hope Food Bank kitchen immediately after retreat. I truly believe this exercise helped set the tone for the year of "giving back" to the community. You will notice that most of our alumni events this year will somehow support different community organizations within San Antonio. I feel it is important to recognize that we are a group of business professionals representing a number of companies and we can make a significant impact in "giving back" to our own community.
In addition, Structure Tone Southwest sponsored the LLab Alumni Association table at the North Chamber Gala where many of our LLab friends served on event committees and were in attendance. In February and March, the 2011 LLab class began their "Passport to Leadership." The Alumni Association was well represented as volunteers for the breakfast orientation and retreat. The Alumni Association also had an opportunity to sponsor the leadership book the 2011 class will use throughout the year and will close out the year by helping sponsor the last session in November.
Finally, we had a huge success at our first alumni social event at the County Line. It was great to see former graduates of the LLab program stay connected and continue to build relationships.

We collected food cans and sold raffle tickets with proceeds going directly to the San Antonio Food Bank. David Dunne, from Preferred Landscaping and Lighting, won the big prize and Kate Leonard, from SWBC, won our "fun" prize. Her task now is to bring it to our next alumni event where someone else will be the lucky one to pass it on.
This is just the beginning of what's to come so please feel free to get involved in our committees and help us have another successful year for the Alumni Association. The Alumni Board has worked hard in planning this year's events and look forward to your participation.
