More Applications Causes Admissions Challenges The College Admissions Report 2011 of NACAC reveals that the past decade has seen increases in the numbers of high school grads, college applicants, and students in higher education. Women have enrolled in college at a higher rate, causing some colleges to have differential rates of admission for females and males to try to narrow the gender gap. Applications have increased, and as a result, selectivity has increased and yield has decreased. As admissions becomes more unpredictable, colleges are relying more on Early Decision to fill up to half the incoming class. For more, see our BLOG. Go to TOP OF ARTICLES |
Wait Lists Grow
As of this writing, most high school seniors now know the outcomes of all their college applications, as well as which college they will attend. However, others are still awaiting the result of being placed on a college's wait list. Colleges are making increased use of wait lists, due to more applications over the last decade plus growing unpredictability about students' yield (the percentage of admitted students who decide to enroll). MCAT Will Change in 2015
Starting in 2015, the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) will include new sections in the social sciences and critical thinking, and eliminate the writing sample. The overall test length will increase one hour, bringing the total testing time to six and half hours. The changes stem from medical schools embracing a more holistic approach to admissions in the hopes of attracting students with broader undergraduate training. For more, see our BLOG.

Online Education Online education opportunities are expanding among universities. With the increased cost of college, coupled with the desire to expand access to higher education, universities have turned their focus to developing an alternative platform for delivering instruction. MIT, Harvard, and Stanford have successfully launched free online programs offering their curriculum and professors to a global community of learners. The concept of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is gaining popularity, as Stanford's Coursera program has recently earned the partnerships of University of Michigan, U Penn, and Princeton. More Selective Teacher Prep = Better Teachers? If getting into teacher preparation programs were as difficult as gaining admission to law school or medical school, would education graduates be more effective teachers? Colleges and universities around the country have been under pressure to make their teacher preparation programs more competitive and selective, as the increased pressure for teacher accountability continues. Programs like Teach For America (TFA) offer an alternative to the typical teacher preparation programs. For more, see our BLOG.
