VA Aid & Attendance

New Handout Explains Benefits

The Senior Law Resource Center has released a new handout on the Veterans Administration's Aid & Attendance benefit. What You Need To Know About VA Aid & Attendance explains the eligibility requirements, how benefits are calculated, and how to apply.

Aid & Attendance is an important source of financial assistance for veterans and their spouses who need extra help either at home or in a facility.

Thanks to a grant from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, the new handout is available at no charge in print or electronically. Click here to download a PDF of the handout, or contact the Senior Law Resource Center at info@senior.law.org or (405) 528-0858 to request a printed copy.

No More Paper Checks

Change Affects Social Security & Other Federal Government Benefits

Beginning in 2013, recipients of Social Security income, veterans' benefits, railroad pensions, and other federal payments will no longer receive paper checks in the mail. Instead, all payments will be made electronically either by direct deposit into a bank account or credited to a debit card.

There will not be any fee for using the debit card to make purchases. Cardholders will also be able to use the cards to withdraw cash from ATMs. One cash withdrawal per pay period will be free. Additional cash withdrawals will cost .90 each.

People who are 90 years old or older, or who can prove that making the switch will cause a hardship, may seek a waiver to allow them to continue to receive checks by mail.

Recipients must make the switch by March 31, 2013. They can sign up for direct deposit by going to the website http://godirect.org. Those who do not sign up for direct deposit will be automatically enrolled in the debit card program.
