Durable Powers of Attorney

New Handout Now Available

What You Need To Know About Durable Powers of Attorney is the first in our new series of short handouts on legal issues affecting seniors and caregivers.

This four-page brochure explains what a durable power of attorney is, how to choose the person who will act on your behalf (the "attorney-in-fact) and that person's roles and responsibilities. It also addresses how to change or revoke a durable power of attorney and ways to minimize the risk that the document will be misused.

Thanks to an iFund grant from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, this brochure is available at no charge.

You may download a PDFof the brochure, or order printed copies by calling (405) 528-0858 or emailing info@senior-law.org.

Transfer-On-Death Deed 2.0

Article in Jan. 2012 Oklahoma Bar Journal Highlights Changes to Law

In the current issue of the Oklahoma Bar Journal, SLRC attorney Catheryn Koss published an article highlighting recent changes to Oklahoma's Transfer-On-Death Deed law (Nontestamentary Transfer of Property Act).

One of the most significant changes is that now a beneficiary receiving property through a TOD deed must file an affidavit accepting the property within nine months of the prior owner's death. If no affidavit is filed, the property will go back to the estate of the deceased owner and may have to be probated.

Kaiser Family Foundation     A Non-Partisan Source of Information on Health Care

Much of the political debate this election season is focused on health care costs for seniors and the uninsured. The Kaiser Family Foundation is an excellent source of non-partisan information.

While some of the publications are a bit too technical for most of us, the Foundation provides some easy-to-understand materials on Medicare, Medicaid, and Health Reform.
