Changes to Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Period
New Dates Are Oct. 15-Dec. 7
Each year, Medicare recipients who have prescription drug coverage under Part D have an opportunity during the Open Enrollment period to compare plans and sign up for the one that best meets their needs. In the past, the enrollment period was November 15-December 31.
This year, the Open Enrollment period starts and ends earlier. Between October 15 and December 7, Part D recipients can compare and switch drug plans. After December 7, Medicare recipients are generally locked into their plans (with a few exceptions) until the next Open Enrollment period.
If a person who currently receives Medicare Part D does not switch plans during the Open Enrollment period, he or she will automatically be re-enrolled in the current drug plan. However, drug plans change every year. What may have been a good plan for a person in the past may not be the best choice going forward.
For more information about reviewing and switching Part D plans during the Open Enrollment period, go to www.medicare.gov. |

Providing for Loved Ones on Medicaid
How To Leave Property to a Disabled Person or Someone Receiving Medicaid Assistance
People usually want to provide for their spouses and other loved ones by leaving them money or property. However, if the loved ones receive Medicaid or other means-tested benefits, an inheritance could make them disqualified for needed assistance.
Third-party special needs trusts can be used to provide for disabled or older people without inadvertently causing them to lose benefits. Money or property in this type of trust can only be used for expenses that are not provided by government benefits. For example, the trust funds could be used to pay for education, memberships, or travel, but not for covered medical care or housing. For more information about third-party special needs trusts, contact the Senior Law Resource Center at (405) 528-0858 or info@senior-law.org. |
