Dear Alliance Stakeholders, Chamber Members and Partners,
A thank you to all who joined us in May for The Great Connect Event! At the event The Alliance premiered our community videos which can be used by our Stakeholders and is available on our website. Please use them to promote our community and your business in Kokomo and Howard County.
It has been a busy early summer for The Alliance, and we continue to lead the effort in our three focused operating areas: economic development, Chamber and existing business services and quality of place.
On the economic development front, we are engaged with a robust prospect list, competing for those who are interested in the assets our community has to offer and targeting those that we are well positioned for. Thank you to all partners who have cooperated in our site visits from consultants and prospects! We hope to add to our list of successful projects in our community. Bringing the right partners to the table is critical to our ability to succeed. Companies know that they will need to invest in their business to compete as the economy adjusts. We are dedicated to provide them with the best choice of where to land to compete. We are making progress in developing additional strategies surrounding business development, which includes building a medical device market strategy to "play" in that market, an international strategy to attract new jobs, and investments to Kokomo and Howard County globally. Look for more to come on these programs in the future.
For our existing businesses, we have hosted business education programs through our Chamber University. These programs have been popular and informative. We invite you to attend those which will be beneficial to you and your organization. We appreciate our local legislators who were able to participate in our Eggs & Issues program wrapping up the 2011 legislative session. We hope you will plan to participate in our Golf Outing this year. More information is available for the August 17th event on our website.
We continue to see strides in playing a role with our quality of place area. We are excited about activities in our downtown, developing new opportunities at Inventrek Technology Park, and strategizing about opportunities a new and current US 31 corridor will bring to our community. We are working closely with the City of Kokomo on the development of a residential attraction strategy to package our story with access to programs to "sell" Kokomo and Howard County as a place to call home. A big "Thank You" to all the volunteers and staff who made this year's Strawberry Festival the most popular ever!
The Alliance welcomes the Convention and Visitors Bureau to the team! The CVB is located in our downtown Main Street office. Our Board and Staff's are working on building the new relationship that will provide another strategic tool to impact our economic development impact cooperatively for our community.
On August 12th, The Alliance will be the local not-for-profit sponsor for the summer concert series at the Pavilion downtown. We invite any and all of our Stakeholders to join us that night and invite you to volunteer with our efforts for the event as well. Contact John Wiles at our Main Street office, 765.457.5301, if you are interested.
The Alliance will continue to lead in providing professional experience to local economic development, existing business programs, and quality of place in Kokomo and Howard County. We thank you for your support.

DUKE ENERGIZES SUMMER READING CLUB PROGRAM LINEUP WITH DONATION
During the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library's Summer Reading Club kickoff, children - and adults - moved to the beat of the steel drums and learned about music - thanks to Duke Energy.
For years Duke Energy has provided a grant to the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, which then allows the KHCPL to provide an entertaining and educational program during the annual Summer Reading Club.
"The Summer Reading Club is our biggest program of the year with about 5,000 people participating," said Doug Workinger, head of the Outreach Department for the KHCPL. "We have four Young Audience of Indiana programs this summer, including Tom Berich who played the steel drums for the kickoff party. Kids and adults were in line wanting to learn. We could not have afforded to provide that steel drum program if it weren't for Duke Energy. The library simply cannot thank Duke enough for its support - not just this year but over the years."
